Page 2 Volunteers: The Spirit of Giving Honoring Supporters Missouri Veterans Home - Warrensburg and the West Central Missouri Veterans Assistance League honored supporters at a banquet with 150 people attending from the surrounding counties. Special recognition awards were given for Outstanding Individual, Group Volunteerism, Financial Support. Pictured left to right: Michael Wilson, Asst. Page 3 From the Office of the Administrator, Eric Endsley In my last article I spoke about a movement in healthcare toward person-centered care or “culture change”. This model of care simply means that we as healthcare professionals adjust the way we deliver services to our customers to meet their unique desires and needs. At MVH-W we refer to this as Neighbor-centered care. Our neighbor-centered care model has been in place for years, but has waxed and waned based upon shifting priorities. Recently we have renewed our commitment to Neighbor (or person) centered care by challenging our routines that placed what we perceived as efficiency over Veteran preference. A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to spend time with one of our preceptor classes. A preceptor is a caregiver who trains and mentors new caregivers in our organization. In that class I asked a question I frequently ask groups to whom I speak, the question was “how many of you would like to move into a nursing home today?” As you can imagine, and just like all the times before when I’ve asked employee and non-employee groups, not one hand was raised. I proceeded to ask this group what it would take for them to want to move in to a nursing home. Their response, to paraphrase, was the ability to direct their own care, such as when to bathe, eat, go to bed and wake up; a more homelike environment, fewer rules, queen size beds, get rid of the personal alarms, and so on. These are all responses I expected, and things I will want changed if I ever live in a nursing home. These are all easy things to do right? Easy is of course relative, but many of these suggestions are possible with concentrated efforts and the patience and support of our customers, Highland Park Ernest Fluty Clyde Schwach Leland McCannon Joseph Patrick Robert Needham Willis Hinck Welcome to our new Neighbors . . . In the coming months our Director of Recreation Therapy, Darlene Snively and Assistant Administrator, Richard Welch, will be visibly leading a team of change agents. These employees who will be our agents of change will realize our initiative to further make MVH- W a Home where we deliberately focus on integrating individual Veteran preference and requests into our provision of care and do so in what feels as close to home as we can make. Some early signs of this change to our culture that you can look for include replacing our large clothing protectors (bibs) with cloth napkins—who eats with a bib at home?; methodically removing personal alarms—how many of us have placed alarms on our loved ones to let us know when they are trying to get out of bed or a chair?; liberalizing diets—how many of us would look forward to eating a pureed meal and following it with a few spoonfuls of thickened grainy water? I think you’ll agree that we are going to make some changes to reflect the type of environment we’d like to live in, but we’re also going to be challenging how we all think and respond to circumstances differently. If you’ve read many of my articles, you are aware that I believe that we are all on a journey at MVH-W and you as stakeholder are on that journey with us. This is perhaps one of our most important journeys ever; we are setting out to shift perceptions of how care is provided in nursing homes. We are shifting the model of care to more closely reflect a model we would prefer—now that’s health care reform! As we travel on this journey together, I request that you share with me your feedback, what is important to you, where you think we are missing the target and where you think we are doing well. My team and I value your input, and after all, we’re all here for the same reason, to take great care of our Veteran Heroes.
