In my last article I spoke<br />
about a movement in healthcare<br />
toward person-centered care or<br />
“culture change”. This model<br />
of care simply means that we as<br />
healthcare professionals adjust<br />
the way we deliver services<br />
to our customers to meet their<br />
unique desires and needs. At<br />
MVH-W we refer to this as<br />
Neighbor-centered care. Our<br />
neighbor-centered care model has been in place for years,<br />
but has waxed and waned based upon shifting priorities.<br />
Recently we have renewed our commitment to Neighbor<br />
(or person) centered care by challenging our routines<br />
that placed what we perceived as efficiency over Veteran<br />
preference.<br />
A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to<br />
spend time with one of our preceptor classes. A preceptor<br />
is a caregiver who trains and mentors new caregivers in our<br />
organization. In that class I asked a question I frequently<br />
ask groups to whom I speak, the question was “how many<br />
of you would like to move into a nursing home today?”<br />
As you can imagine, and just like all the times before<br />
when I’ve asked employee and non-employee groups, not<br />
one hand was raised. I proceeded to ask this group what<br />
it would take for them to want to move in to a nursing<br />
home. Their response, to paraphrase, was the ability to<br />
direct their own care, such as when to bathe, eat, go to bed<br />
and wake up; a more homelike environment, fewer rules,<br />
queen size beds, get rid of the personal alarms, and so<br />
on. These are all responses I expected, and things I will<br />
want changed if I ever live in a nursing home. These are<br />
all easy things to do right? Easy is of course relative, but<br />
many of these suggestions are possible with concentrated<br />
efforts and the patience and support of our customers,<br />

In the coming months our Director of Recreation<br />
Therapy, Darlene Snively and Assistant Administrator,<br />
Richard Welch, will be visibly leading a team of change<br />
agents. These employees who will be our agents of<br />
change will realize our initiative to further make MVH-<br />
W a Home where we deliberately focus on integrating<br />
individual Veteran preference and requests into our<br />
provision of care and do so in what feels as close to home<br />
as we can make. Some early signs of this change to our<br />
culture that you can look for include replacing our large<br />
clothing protectors (bibs) with cloth napkins—who eats<br />
with a bib at home?; methodically removing personal<br />
alarms—how many of us have placed alarms on our loved<br />
ones to let us know when they are trying to get out of bed<br />
or a chair?; liberalizing diets—how many of us would<br />
look forward to eating a pureed meal and following it<br />
with a few spoonfuls of thickened grainy water? I think<br />
you’ll agree that we are going to make some changes to<br />
reflect the type of environment we’d like to live in, but<br />
we’re also going to be challenging how we all think and<br />
respond to circumstances differently.<br />
If you’ve read many of my articles, you are aware<br />
that I believe that we are all on a journey at MVH-W and<br />
you as stakeholder are on that journey with us. This is<br />
perhaps one of our most important journeys ever; we are<br />
setting out to shift perceptions of how care is provided<br />
in nursing homes. We are shifting the model of care to<br />
more closely reflect a model we would prefer—now that’s<br />
health care reform! As we travel on this journey together,<br />
I request that you share with me your feedback, what is<br />
important to you, where you think we are missing the<br />
target and where you think we are doing well. My team<br />
and I value your input, and after all, we’re all here for the<br />
same reason, to take great care of our Veteran Heroes.<br />

A Message From Chaplain Bill<br />
I was not going to write about<br />
this, but the more I thought about<br />
the subject the more I thought I<br />
should. Most of you know that I<br />
suffered a mild heart attack. I want<br />
to thank all of you for your prayers<br />
and “get well soon” cards. It really<br />
was greatly appreciated.<br />
As I was being life flighted to St. Lukes, I<br />
don’t remember a lot, but I do remember the nurse on<br />
the helicopter. In her I saw concern, compassion and<br />
hope. The nurse was the one who kept me calm, who<br />
encouraged me and told me it would be okay.<br />
When I got to the hospital, I don’t remember<br />

much about the doctors, but I do remember the nurses.<br />
It was the nurses and the aids that were there to<br />
encourage, comfort and help me understand what was<br />
going on and in so doing, gave me hope that it would<br />
be okay.<br />
As I thought about the MVH, I could not help<br />
but think about our Heroes and the relationship that<br />
they have with the nurses and aids. I am so thankful for<br />
all of our staff, but I think I understand now that it is the<br />
nurses and aids that are the first to comfort, encourage<br />
and give hope. May your summer be blessed, and may<br />
you be comforted, encouraged and be given hope,<br />
knowing your loved one is truly being cared for by a<br />
staff that truly cares for all of our Heroes.<br />

Robert Blundell<br />
Mr. Robert<br />
Blundell was born<br />
in Kansas City,<br />
<strong>Missouri</strong> on February<br />
2, 1932, to his parents<br />
Samuel and Ruth<br />
Blundell. Robert was<br />
one of four children,<br />
three sons and one<br />
daughter.<br />
While growing<br />
up, Robert’s father worked on the railroad while his<br />
mother was a housewife. Mr. Blundell received his<br />
high school diploma at Northeast High School.<br />
On December 30, 1949, Robert entered the<br />
United States Marine Corps. During his time in<br />
the Marines, he fought in the Korean Conflict as a<br />
tank commander, and he worked as Tractor operator/<br />
machinist. He received the Korean Service Medal<br />
with one star and the UN Ribbon. Upon leaving<br />
the military on October 9, 1953, his final rank was<br />
Sergeant.<br />
Jane Colster is one of the friendly, dependable<br />
volunteers who help at the reception desk in the<br />
evenings. Jane commits to working every Tuesday<br />
evening answering phones, helping family members<br />
and visitors and visiting with <strong>Veterans</strong>. Jane also helps<br />
by writing thank you cards, addressing mass mailings,<br />
and helping with any special projects. She is always<br />
ready to come in at additional times if needed. Jane,<br />
thank you for your service!<br />

General Motors, built airplanes, and was a power<br />
plant engineer in St. Gobain. In 1994, after working<br />
for Certain Teed for 39 years, he retired. During his<br />
retirement he spent his time doing home improvements<br />

Governor Jeremiah W. (Jay) Nixon<br />
presents the January, 2010 State Employee<br />
of the Month award to Jan Smith, Director of<br />
Volunteer Services.<br />
Jan was chosen from over 56,000<br />
<strong>Missouri</strong> State employees and was presented<br />
an engraved plaque in the Governor’s Office in<br />
Jefferson City. Senator David Pearce presented<br />
Jan with a Resolution from the State Senate.<br />

Reception Hall and donated the proceeds to the <strong>Veterans</strong> Assistance League for specific items: gift cards for<br />
bingo prizes, postage stamps, electric razors, phone cards, massage vibrator mitts, and Recreation Therapy<br />
