1 Introduction
1.1 Background
‘Learning young = doing old’, is a well-known (Dutch) expression to indicate the importance of (early) childhood.
How proud we are when our young child makes his or her first independent steps in the big world, parents
carefully keeping the first pair of shoes that indicated the big steps for their small child.
Despite our pride towards the small steps that our children take, we live currently in the ‘Age of the Car’, where it
is socially accepted (and demanded) that we – as grown adults – can use our cars whenever and wherever we
want, unaware (or unwilling?) about the impacts on our environment and future generations. Children are more
and more transported on backseats of cars, cannot play on the street freely and are regarded as ‘vulnerable road
users’.
If we want to change the mindset of small children when they grow up, we have to start early. The BAMBINI
project supports initiatives to stimulate a change in mindset (and - after a while - in behaviour) towards
sustainable transport modes.
In the remaining 2 years of the project, the project partners will realise a number of applications and actions that
contribute to a positive mindset towards sustainability for future generations. As a starting point, an important step
is to analyse existing projects, activities and materials in all the countries involved in the BAMBINI project. The
projects, activities and materials have to be related to sustainable mobility for the BAMBINI target group, this
consist of children from 0-6 years and their parents.
1.2 Application Areas
The BAMBINI project is divided in the following application areas:
• Application area 1: toys and books
• Application area 2: pre-birth early months
• Application area 3: crèches
• Application area 4: kindergarten
• Application area 5: home zones and children streets
In application area 2, 3 and 4 courses, projects and activities will be organised to make the children and their
parents aware of sustainable transport modes. Application area 1 is focussed on toys and books. BAJO, a
wooden toy producer in Poland, is partner of the BAMBINI consortium. BAJO will develop toys for children with
the focus on sustainable mobility. The other project partners will test the developed toys in their country in
crèches and kindergarten. The last application area is home zones and children streets. Nowadays the car
dominates residential areas. Therefore the BAMBINI partners will ask attention for home zones and children
streets on political level. A home zone is a residential area where the car is a guest a children street is a street
that is temporary closed for car traffic. To create more home zones and organise children streets the children
have more space to play in residential areas. All application areas are shown in Figure 1.1.

Figure 1.1: Schedule application areas BAMBINI
1.3 Methodology for collection of best practices
The collection phase is an important step in the BAMBINI project, because this gives an overview of all best
practices in the participating BAMBINI countries. The best practices have to be related to the objectives of
BAMBINI.
To collect the best practices DTV Consultants made the following forms:
• Form to collect the best practices of toys, books, games and other materials (annex 2)
• Form to collection the best practices for application area 2,3 and 4 (annex 3,4 and 5)
• Form to collect information about home zones and children streets (annex 6)
1.4 Reading Guide
This deliverable (D2.2) draws the collection of best practices in each of the countries involved in the BAMBINIproject.
In Chapter 2 the results of the analysis of toys made by BAJO is described. Chapter 3 contains an
overview of results per application area. The annexes contain the best practice forms as they are uploaded on the
BAMBINI website by mid June 2010.
Separate documents exist on the analysis of the framework conditions(D2.1), and implementation plan for
BAMBINI (D2.3).

2 Analysis of Toys
The analysis of toys is done by partner BAJO. The research is done by examining the websites of various toys
suppliers which are well known, have their own products, a variety in products and have a strong position on the
market.
The following toy suppliers have been examined:
• HABA www.haba.de
• SELEKTA www.selecta-spielzeug.de
• NIC www.nictoys.de
• VILAC www.vilac.com
• OSTHEIMER www.ostheimer.de
• ERZI www.erzi.de
• HEROS www.heros-toys.de
• BRIO www.brio.de
• WADER-WOŹNIAK www.wader-wozniak.pl
• FISHER PRICE www.fisher-price.co
• AMERICAN PLASTIC TOYS www.americanplastictoys.com
The number of products of each toy supplier has been counted and the
number of mobility related products has been examined. In the mobility
related products a difference has been made in sustainable and the nonsustainable
mobility related products.
The research provides insight into status of sustainable and nonsustainable
related toys. The conclusion of the research is that many
different toys are produced, but the mobility related toys are not that well covered:
• By 5 of the 11 suppliers the mobility related toys are less than 10% of the total assortment.
• By 3 of the 11 suppliers the mobility related toys are more than 50% of the total assortment.
• The highest percentage of mobility related toys is 72% (by VILAC), most of it is unfortunately non-
sustainable related (91%).
• When a supplier has mobility related toys in the assortment, mostly the percentage of the sustainable
related toys is than between 10%-35%.
• BRIO has a very good score in the relation between the mobility related toys and the sustainable mobility
related toys. 78% of the total assortment is mobility related, of which 74% is sustainable related. BRIO
focuses on trains.
The complete analysis is attached in annex 1.
3 Results per application area
In this chapter the results per application area are presented. In paragraph 3.1 an overview of all application
areas is shown. In paragraph 3.2 the best practices for application area 1: toys and books are described. In this
paragraph a distinguish is made between toys, books, games and other material. The collected activities for
application area 2: pre-birth early months are presented in paragraph 3.3. The best practices for crèches are
shown in paragraph 3.4 and for kindergarten in paragraph 3.5. The last paragraph (3.6) shows the results of the
collection phase for application area 5: home zones and children streets.
3.1 Overview results all application areas
An overview of all collected best practices for all application areas (AA) is presented in Table 3.1. This table
shows that the most best practices are selected for application area 1: toys and books and less for application
area 2, pre-birth and early months, and application area 3, crèches. For kindergarten are the most activities
selected related to the BAMBINI objectives, obviously activities for this target group are more common in the
European countries then the target group pre-birth, early months and crèches. Most activities on crèches are
suitable for kindergarten as well. These activities are mentioned in the column kindergarten between brackets.
The east European countries are not familiar with home zones. The children streets new in all European
countries, only in Belgium is this common.
The Italian partner did an investigation of best practices for BAMBINI in their country as well. They didn’t use the
formats of DTV Consultants, but made an own report. This report is added in annex 7. They describe six best
practices for application area 4. There is no information available over the other application areas.

To get more input for the application areas 2 and 3 most countries did an online survey. They searched for
interesting websites and links with information for young parents and mobility. The results are presented in annex
8.
3.2 Results application area 1 – Toys and Books
All partners searched for good examples of toys, books, games and other material related for BAMBINI. Three
target groups are distinguished; 0-1 year, 1-3 year and 3-6 years. In annex 2 all the results are presented. In this
paragraph and in Table 3.1 an overview of the results are shown. In total 134 materials are selected by the
BAMBINI partners as best practice. The most materials are selected for the target group 3-6 years and least for
the target group 0-1 year. There are not many games selected by the BAMBINI partners.
3.2.1 Toys
There were no good examples selected by the BAMBINI partners for the target group 0-1 years. For the target
group 1-3 twelve good examples were found, mostly busses and trains. The following three toys are most
interesting for BAMBINI. The pictures of these toys are presented in Figure 3.1.
Total
• A three-in-one-bike (Greece)
This bike evolves with a child’s different stages of development. It starts at age one as a trike, converts
to a running bike as the child grows, and by four to five years old, the frame is flipped, making the Bike
one of the largest running bikes on the market. This way cycling become a part of baby's and child life.
• A shape sorting bus (Greece)
Children get familiar with public transport (bus) on a really young age.
• Discovery wagon (Belgium)
Getting there is the job of our wagon, helping children from 10 months on to pull themselves up, to find a
firm hold and to walk with confidence. At the same time children's curiosity is triggered off by all the
elements to turn, push, and examine.
Figure 3.1 Pictures of toys for children from 1 till 3 years old.

The most toys is selected for the target group 3-6 years. With all partners 24 toys were selected. A lot of the toys
are puzzles. The main transport modes of the toys are bikes and the trains. In Austria they selected many things
from play Mobil and Lego with bikes. The following toys are most interesting for BAMBINI. The pictures of these
toys are presented in Figure 3.1.
Figure 3.2 Pictures of toys for children from 3 till 6 years old.
3.2.2 Books
For the target group 0-1 years old there is one book selected. This is a French book and it is called Tchoupi and
transport. This is a picture book about the hero Tchoupi. Eleven books where selected for the target group 1-3
years old. Most books are focussed on stories about or with a bike. The following books are most interesting for
BAMBINI. Pictures of these books are presented in figure 3.3.
• Lotta learns cycling (Germany)
This stimulates children to learn cycling.
• With the Flinstone bike on road (Germany)
This book inspires children to use a Flinstone bike.
• Miffy goes to the zoo by train (The Netherlands)
This inspires children and parents to go the zoo, or other events, by train.

Figure 3.3 Pictures of books for children from 1 till 3 years old.
Most books are selected for the target group 3-6 years in total 31 books. Most books are picture books about
cycling. Other books are about public transport or all transport modes. In France there is also a book about
pollution and about a walking bus. The following books are for kindergartens. Pictures of these books are
presented in figure 3.4.
• Speelkriebels voor kleuters (Belgium)
This book for kindergarten teachers contains more than 220 movement games for 2,5 - to 6-year olds.
Speelkriebels aims supervisors of young children who want to organise enjoyable and development
initiatives. The games are presented from development opportunities such as dealing with space and
time, laterality, feeling, hearing, seeing, movement problems, etc. These skills are all important for
participating in traffic. The authors are both physical education lecturers.
• Hakke Hakke Puf Puf, stories, games and petty facts on transport and mobility (Belgium)
The book has a lot of ideas to do in class, with small stories which can be a good introduction of the
theme to the children. E.g. A story about two children who need to go to the toilet on a train. Really
something that fits in the living environment of the children.
• Guide book for teachers and parents (Bulgaria)
Parents get to know the best way for the transportation of their children
• Manual for kindergartens (Bulgaria)
Manual for kindergartens about how to travel safe with different transport modes.
• Le Pedi bus (France)
This game get the children involved with public transport. Because of the music it is really
attractive for the kids.
Figure 3.5 Pictures of games for children from 3 till 6 years old.
3.2.4 Other material
In the category other material there are a lot of attributes selected. For the target group 0-1 years most countries
selected the sling. In Austria there is also a carrying consultation. Young parents have the possibility to learn how
to handle baby slings properly. Actually this is equal to the best practices of Belgium, described in paragraph
3.3.1. In France a baby seat for a bike is selected. Pictures of these materials are shown in figure 3.6.

Figure 3.6 Pictures of games for children from 3 till 6 years old.
For the target group 1-3 years 22 materials were selected. There were eight bikes selected for parents to travel
easily by bike (like the carrier bike 3x, a cabby, a bike seat) and seven little bikes for the children (Flintstone bike
4x, a tricycle 2x, scooter). The best practice for the bikes for parents is the Taga 2 in 2 pushchair and bike
from Austria. Parents can use it as a bike and as a stroller when they go shopping. A picture of this
bike/stroller is presented in Figure 3.7.
Figure 3.7 Picture Taga 2 in 2 pushchair and bike for 1 till 3 years old.
Other good examples for the target group 1-3 years old are shown below. Pictures of these examples are presented in Figure
3.8.
Figure 3.8 Pictures of materials for the target group 1 till 3 years old.

For the target group 3-6 years there are 20 materials selected. There are three main categories:
• Educational material – 7 examples
- CD-rom
- Didactic poster
- Toolkit traffic safety (2x)
- guidebook how to cycle and walk
- game about sustainable mobility
• Bike / scooters for children – 5 examples
• Bike for the parents – 3 examples
- children seat for a bike
- bike trailer
- Children's bike connected to an adult bike (presented in Figure 3.9)
• Other material – 5 examples
- tandem for 10 persons (also children) is used by a day care centre in the Netherlands
(presented in Figure 3.9)
- roller skates
- Water bottle with a picture of a bike
Figure 3.9 Pictures of useful material for the target group 3 till 6 years old.
3.3 Results application area 2 – Pre-birth and early months
In this paragraph the results are presented from the collection phase of application area 2, pre-birth early months.
The complete forms of these best practices are shown in annex 3.
3.3.1 Workshop on slings – Belgium
A baby shop, which is called ‘Broekjes en doekjes’ , focuses strongly on the advantages of
slings. They organise on regular basis information evenings and workshops on slings. In
the workshops attention is given to the advantages of slings, the types of slings. Participants
also have the chance to try out different slings.
This workshop has potential for BAMBINI, because it is important to inform parents about
materials which support travelling in a sustainable mode, but it is even more important to
give future parents the possibility to test the different materials and explain them how to use
it correctly.

3.3.2 Fietskar info - Belgium
Fietskarinfo is a bike shop who wants to inform future parents in the early
phase, when they start thinking about the transport materials they will need
while having a baby. They set provide information through different partners
like the National health insurance fund CM, crèches and the local office of
‘Child and Family’ (Kind en Gezin). The also set up a stand on fairs on bikes
or babies, on the car free Sunday.
This has potential for BAMBINI, because it is important to build up a network
to reach the future or young parents. This bike shop has also a lot of
experience and material to offer.
3.3.3 School for mothers to be – Romania
The courses are held by a private clinic for the future mothers-to-be, in order to introduce them all the information
regarding pregnancy, hygiene, birth, health of the mother and child, medical investigations, recommendations,
gymnastics and everything there is to know about the evolution of the child.
These courses are useful for the BAMBINI application forms due to the professional information they give to
parents concerning the evolution of their children. The input is concerned on health and care elements, but there
is need for more information. Parents want to develop their children’s intelligence. The BAMBINI messages and
key principles are suitable and represent added value for parents.
3.3.4 School for future parents – Slovenia
Every future parent is invited to join the school for future parents for free,
because this is part of the national programmes.
The schools for future parents are useful for BAMBINI, because of the possibility
to collect data on the content of the courses of the schools. How is mobility
included in their programmes and to try to improve them if possible.
3.4 Results application area 3 – Crèches
In this paragraph the results are presented from the collection phase of application area 3, crèches. The complete
forms of these best practices are shown in annex 4.
3.4.1 Workshop motorial exploration – VCOK – Belgium
During the workshop basic information is given on the spontaneous motor development of young children. Next to
this bottlenecks in the development are discussed as well as how to equip a room so that it invites children to
explore and play. Last but not least the influence of games and toys on motor development are considered.
This workshop is interesting for the BAMBINI project, although there is no special focus on cycling or walking, this
can easily be embedded.
3.4.2 Drawing competition – Bulgaria
Most of the kindergartens in Plovdiv and Hisarya join the drawing competition with
the theme bicycles.
This competition is useful for BAMBINI, because the competition shows the idea of
the children how a bike looks and it can be used as first “meeting” of the children with
the sustainable transport modes.

3.4.3 Learn young – The Netherlands
The main goal of this project is traffic safety lessons for children from 0-4 years old
and to involve their parents. To reach this goal there are project weeks for the
children, where they learning by playing about traffic and the rules. For the parents
there is an information session, where the parents learn about the different
development phases of a child and practical tips for traffic safety and traffic education
f or their children. The crèche gives also information about safe travelling with a child
in a buggy, on bike and in a car.
This is a popular project in the Netherlands. It is easy to submit the theme sustainable mobility, because for traffic
education it is important that the children participate in traffic instead of sitting in the car. The parent evening can
be used to discuss with the parents about sustainable mobility.
3.4.4 Decorating bikes – The Netherlands
During Queens day a lot of children decorate their bike with orange and the colours
of the Dutch flag. It is a tradition and a fun activity for kids. Most of the times it is a
competition as well. After queens day it is more attractive for the children to cycle,
because they have a decorated bike.
This activity is useful for BAMBINI, because it is fun and it can be used to reach the
parents with information about sustainable mobility.
3.4.5 Parents club – Romania
The Parents Club is an environment where parents are informed and advised. The club is good for socialisation
between (preoccupied) parents and their children. They are informed about health and educational issues, about
ways their children can spend leisure time in Braşov and about activities they can participate before starting at the
kindergarten.
The informational sessions, especially those where different specialists are invited, are useful for the BAMBINI
application, because parents are interested on sustainable life, sustainable transportation and mobility subjects.
The BAMBINI messages and key principles are suitable and represent added value for the members.
3.4.6 European Mobility week – Slovenia
The European mobility week is held also in some Slovene cities. Murska Sobota is
this year for the 10 th time a part of this action. Children from kindergarten to primary
school are all involved in different awareness and mobility activities. Also local
communities are involved.
3.4.7 Fit club – Slovenia
The main goal of the fit club is coordination development, strength development, mobility
development, balance development and development of motor skills. The fit club is good for
the health of children and teachers.
The fit club is interesting for BAMBINI, because the children develop a lot of mobility skills
through the interesting plays.

3.5 Results application area 4 – Kindergarten
In this paragraph the results are presented from the collection phase of application area 4, kindergarten. The
complete forms of these best practices are shown in annex 5.
3.5.1 There is nothing like starting young – Austria
Kindergarten age is the perfect age to rouse children’s enthusiasm for cycling
and walking and to influence the mobility behaviour in further life. Children
who have a positive attitude towards these ways of moving tend to “educate”
their parents to use bicycles more often because they are affected in an
emotional way. There is nothing like starting young consists of learning how
to cycle, picture stories about cycling, certificate, ‘I can Bike’ and motivating
activities for parents.
The goals of this kindergarten program are:
• to motivate children to learn cycling playfully
• to train employees of kindergartens on how to implement the action
• to provide emotional context and material
• to design the kindergarten environment into a reduced car area
• to advise parents to abstain taking their children to the kindergarten by car
This program is very interesting for BAMBINI, because it can be easily transferred to other sites and the program
has a very good cost benefit ratio. In the city of Graz is a lot of experience with this program and it has a positive
evaluation.
3.5.2 MOS – Environment Education at school - Belgium
MOS (environmental care at school) is a project to introduce working on different environmental issues (energy,
nature at school, mobility, water and waste) at school.
MOS is an interesting partner for BAMBINI, because they are involved with the theme sustainability and have
experience with education. It is easy to add a lesson about sustainable transport.
3.5.3 Puppet shows - Belgium
These are all plays or puppet shows that treat traffic, traffic safety and getting to know the
street. Small children identify themselves very much with characters in plays and puppet
shows, therefore these are good means to start working the topic with the children or as a
final event after working on the topic.
It could be interesting for BAMBINI to get in contact with theatre companies and ask them
to work together on a play on sustainable transport.
3.5.4 Sam the Traffic Snake – Belgium
Through the Traffic Snake Game children are stimulated to go to school
in a safe and sustainable way. The campaign contains a game
completed with an educational offer concerning traffic and mobility.
“Car traffic is increasing what leads to more unsafe situations what
increases the feeling of insecurity of parents. As a result, parents drive
their children to school by car what results in more car traffic in the
school environment…” Mobiel 21 stimulates schools, children and
parents to break this vicious circle and commits them to walk or cycle
more to school, certainly those living close to school.

Every day during the Traffic Snake Game, children receive a red dot for every environment-friendly trip to school.
They stick these dots on a large Traffic Snake Banner. At the end of the week, the Traffic Snake has to be
covered completely in red dots. At that moment, the goal of the campaign is reached, namely more children
travelling to school safely and environment-friendly and less car traffic near the school.
The Traffic Snake Game is an interesting project for BAMBINI, because it is a basic game, easy to implement and
it stimulates schools to set up mobility projects. Officially this project is designed for primary schools, but a lot of
kindergartens join as well. Potential for Bambini is to design a concept that fits kindergarten more.
In Belgium the give incentives to schools to stimulate them to do more than playing the game. (free consultancy,
set up co-operation with the community,…). This works really well. This idea is useful for BAMBINI as well.
3.5.5 Walking buses – France
The walking bus is an imitative to stimulate walking to school. Children walk together
to school with one or two parents. Therefore parents don’t need to bring their child to
school everyday. During the walking bus week, the teacher pays extra attention to
walking, through the awareness material and to talk about the walking bus with
children.
The walking bus has potential for BAMBINI, because it stimulates young children to
walk. The walking bus offers also a lot of educational opportunities to work on
walking in the city (rules), enjoying the walk (pleasure), understanding why walking is
a good mode of transport (benefits), exercise (health). The success of the project
depends on the involvement and motivation from parents.
3.5.6 By foot to kindergarten - Germany
An activity of the European Mobility week is the international “walk to school-day”. With the campaign by foot to
kindergarten children are stimulated to be more active and walk to school or go by scooter or bike instead of
being driven in a car. Schools and kindergartens which want to participate in the campaign find ideas and
information under www.zu-fuss-zur-schule.de. Each class/kindergarten which reports their project, has the
chance to be one of the ten winners, who get 100 euro. The best ideas will be presented on the next year’s
poster.
The European Mobility week is a chance for BAMBINI to start an action or a campaign, like: walking to
the kindergarten together with your children, going by scooter or by bike. There are a lot of ideas for
primary school, which can be used for kindergarten. This campaign is a German campaign. Maybe it is
possible to start an European campaign.
3.5.7 Action day by foot to kindergarten - Germany
The “Arbeitskreis Mobilitätserziehung Berlin” supports kindergarten in Berlin , which want to start an
action or project to mobility education with materials, ideas and incitement.
This is very interesting for BAMBINI, because when you support kindergartens to start an action, there
is a good possibility to implement the theme sustainable mobility in kindergartens. Actions and
campaigns make the theme sustainable mobility more well known.
3.5.8 Activities for promotion of cycling - Greece
The Municipality of Karditsa is considered a pioneer city in cycling, at least in Greece. Every year during
European Mobility Week a range of activities and events are organised, related to cycling, i.e. bike races and
games, wall graffiti, bike-ribbons etc. The municipal Children’s Creativity Centres participate at these events. The
main goal is to encourage small children to use alternative transport modes and more specific cycling.

The activities usually carried out are:
- writing of mottos and painting of bikes or relevant subjects on roll-on cardboard
- construction of pins from fuzzy wire depicting bikes
The activities for promotion of cycling carried out at the Children’s Creativity Centres of Municipality of Karditsa
are applicable to BAMBINI’s purposes. Hence, they could be included to the BAMBINI implementation plans.
3.5.9 Fairy tale – First day at school – Greece
A fairy tale for children to discourage car use and promote walking to
kindergarten and explain the benefits of going to school on foot. The story
is in animation cartoon form. A short summary of the story is given below:
“Dafni and Peter, twin sister and brother, are going to kindergarten by car.
It is their first day at school and they are very happy. The car is suddenly
broken down and they decide to go to kindergarten on foot. They enjoy
walking, as they can feel the sun, smell nice odours, enjoy the green,
glance at store windows and the same time talk with their mother for all
these new experiences. Moreover, while walking to school, they meet
new people and make new friends. There is a leaflet to inform the
parents.
This activity was inspired from the concept of BAMBINI Project. Therefore
it is 100 percent suitable to be included in the implementation plans of
BAMBINI.
3.5.10 Story telling night – Romania
The “Story telling night” is a weekly event destined for kindergarten children, having as main goal to make them
discover books and the pleasure to read. Sometimes, a celebrity is invited to read a story, but usually the stories
are read by educators or parents.
This activity is useful for the BAMBINI applications, because there are many stories involving clean transportation
and mobility. This way, children receive the key messages in a smooth and educational way, throughout a lovable
activity.
3.5.11 Outdoor kindergarten - Romania
The “Outdoor Kindergarten” is a monthly event destined for kindergarten children. It is an educational project,
aimed to discourage the action of staying indoors. It has a different subject every time, it is opened for all the
children present in the park at that time, and it is free of charge. Usually, there are all types of activities for
children to play outdoors.
This activity is useful for the BAMBINI applications, because the BAMBINI toys and educational materials can be
promoted.
3.6 Results application area 5 – Home zones and children streets
In this paragraph the home zones and children streets from the BAMBINI partners are shown. In annex 6 all the
information about home zones and children streets of all the countries is presented.
3.6.1 Home zones
A home zone is a street in a residential area with a speed limit of maximum 30 km/h. A home zone is designed as
shared space with no different levels and to enhance social contact. The typical infrastructure, like green accents,
prevents non-local traffic. There is access for all and it is clear that a car driver is a guests. Cars has to be parked
in the marked places.

The east European countries like Bulgaria, Romania and Slovenia are not familiar with home zones. The other
BAMBINI partners send some examples of their home zones. Pictures of these home zones are presented in
Figure 3.6.
All home zones selected by the BAMBINI partners are located in residential areas. The speed limit differs from
walking speed to 30 km/h. In most countries the green accents in home zones are trees. Germany and Greece
selected also home zones with flowers beds. In the Netherlands a home zone is selected without green public
accents. The green accents in the street are from the gardens of the residents. Social contact is important in a
home zone, but in most selected home zones by the BAMBINI partners there are no benches. In three home
zones there are benches, these are selected by Austria, Belgium and Germany. Home zones have typically
infrastructure to slow down the traffic. The green accents, the marked parking places and short straight parts of
the road are used to slow down the traffic.
Belgium
Germany
The Netherlands
Greece
Figure 3.6 Pictures of home zones in the different countries.
3.6.2 Children street
A children street is designed temporary for children. Therefore the street is temporary closed for motorised traffic.
The children streets can be organised once a year, every month, every week or two whole weeks. In the street
only residential parking and local traffic is allowed. The rules of the children street are defined by the residents
and the municipality. In the street is infrastructure for children to play.
The children streets are new for all European partners. Only in Belgium the children streets are common. During
the BAMBINI project we would like to introduce the children streets in all participating countries of the BAMBINI
project.

In Belgium a street can ask permission for a children street by the local authority, when more then 50 percent of
the residents of the streets wants to organise a children street. In Anderlecht (Brussels) a non-profit organisation
made promotion for the playing streets, set out dates and places and provided the playing streets with outdoor
toys.
The children street selected by Germany is not really a children street, because the street is always closed for
motorised traffic. Therefore it is more a playground then a children street.
In the Netherlands children streets are emerging. In 2009 the book Childrensteets 2009 is published. In this book
20 professionals describes how children can participate safely on the road. There is also attention for how to
design roads for children. This book has been sent to all Dutch Municipalities to ask attention for this theme. In
the Netherlands a lot of schools organises a street playing day every year. The school organises activities and
games for the children on the street, but most times the children are not allowed to play their own game. In
Dordrecht the municipality created a physical children street, because the play ground is in the middle of the
street. Local motorised traffic is allowed to pass, but they have to slow down, because it is narrow. In Delft the
neighbours of a court, decided that they won’t park their car in the court during day time, so there is enough
space for the children to play.
Partner name: ABMEE
Title: Parents Club
Type: Crèches
Short description:
Target group: Children / Parents
Barriers / success
factors:
The Parents Club is an environment where parents are informed and advised. The club
is good for socialisation between (preoccupied) parents and their children. They are
informed about health and educational issues, about ways their children can spend
leisure time in Braşov and about activities they can participate before starting at the
kindergarten.
Barriers:
There is no good transportation alternative for the parents and their children, in terms of
safety and mobility factors. The personal car is the only way they can transport their
children safely and it is the easiest way to get anywhere. In Braşov (Romania) are not
many cycling tracks and public transportation is not working efficiently.
Success factors:
The members of Parents Club are educated parents, opened for new information on
clean transportation and most likely to accept the BAMBINI content, even if there is no
acceptable solution for the moment. They are expected to be understandable regarding
the need of healthy and clean mobility lifestyle for their children.
Parents participating to the informational sessions and discussions are interested in any
kind of information that contributes to the health and evolution of their children.
Kindergarten
Austria
There is nothing like starting young
Country: Austria
Partner name: FGM-AMOR
Title: Mobility management for Kindergartens: “There is nothing like starting young.”
Type: Kindergarten
Short description:
There is a dramatic decrease of physical activity of children in Austria. This leads to
overweight, a lack of co-ordination abilities and consequently to a higher risk of being
involved in an accident. About 20% of the children between 10-14 years report back
pain. On the other hand children are more and more taken to the kindergarten by car and
experience the world from the perspective of the back seat of their parents` car.
Kindergarten age is the perfect age to rouse children’s enthusiasm for cycling and
walking and to influence the mobility behaviour in further life. Children who have a
positive attitude towards these ways of moving tend to “educate” their parents to use
bicycles more often because they are affected in an emotional way.
Activities undertaken:
The goals of this kindergarten program are:
• to motivate children to learn cycling playfully
• to train employees of kindergartens on how to implement the action
• to provide emotional context and material
• to design the kindergarten environment into a reduced car area
• to advise parents to abstain taking their children to the kindergarten by car
The kindergarten program consists of:
• Learning how to cycle
• Picture cycling stories
• Certificate „I can bike“
• Motivating activities for parents

In the city of Graz (255.000 inhabitants) 46 kindergartens implemented the program.
Every group got special bicycles (no pedals, no training wheels) to learn to cycle. Telling
stories about cycling is another activity; therefore a special picture book was developed.
Those children how learnt to cycle got a certificate. Additionally, motivating activities for
parents to reduce car trips to the kindergarten were carried out.
In the first year 115 kindergarten groups were involved in the program. Approximately
1500 children learnt to cycle (~ 53%). A survey among parents, who were concerned in
the first place, showed that all were satisfied with the program. The action will now be
offered as a regular annual program for the kindergartens.
Target group: Children / Parents /Teachers
Barriers / success
factors:
Success factors
This program is easy to apply and has a very good cost benefit ratio. The approach to
combine emotional elements (story telling) and training of skills (e.g. balance) proved to
be successful. The children became proud of their way of moving and also influenced
their parents to change their mobility behaviour especially for the trips to the
kindergartens. The method can be easily transferred to other sites.
Sam the Traffic Snake
Country: Belgium
Partner name: M21
Title: SAM the Traffic Snake (Verkeersslang)
Type: Kindergarten
Short description:
Lots of children and parents find themselves in a vicious circle:
“Car traffic is increasing what leads to more unsafe situations what increases the feeling
of insecurity of parents. As a result, parents drive their children to school by car what
results in more car traffic in the school environment…” Mobiel 21 stimulates schools,
children and parents to break this vicious circle and commits them to walk or cycle more
to school, certainly those living close to school.
Every day during this week, children receive a red dot for every environment-friendly trip
to school. They stick these dots on a large traffic-snake banner. At the end of the week,
the traffic-snake has to be covered completely in red dots. At that moment, the goal of
the campaign is reached, namely more children travelling to school safely and
environment-friendly and less car traffic near the school.
By cycling and walking more, children improve themselves in cycling and walking. Their
bicycle skills improve, they become more familiar with daily traffic and their ability to
anticipate on other road users improves. Furthermore, walking and cycling contribute to
the recommended dose exercise children and adults needs. It also reduces traffic chaos
and parking pressure at schools.

Short description:
Through this campaign, Mobiel 21 wants to offer children the possibility to go to school
safely and environment-friendly. The campaign contains a game completed with an
educational offer concerning traffic and mobility.
Target group: Children / Parents / Teachers
Barriers / success
factors:
Success Factors:
During the year 2008-2009, a total number of approximately 1300 schools, 237.624
pupils and 165.280 families have engaged themselves to let the car stay at home for at
least one week.
Before the campaign the sustainable trips were measured at 46%, this rose during the
action mid May 2009 up till 66%. After the action mid June 2009 we still registered 56%
sustainable trips. The amount of helmets increased with 9% during the campaign, and
maintained a surplus of 4% after the campaign.
Advantages:
• A playful campaign and easy to implement,
• designed to fit every school,
• with a larger impact as the whole school participates in the campaign.
• It reduces car traffic, parking pressure and chaos in the school environment.
• Cycling and walking are good for your health, the environment and money pouch.
• Cycling whilst wearing a fluorescent vests and helmet is safer.
Barriers:
• For schools it is often a benefit to have a game without a lot of obligations. For
Mobiel 21 as an organisation who wants to stimulate schools to organise mobility
projects, this is sometimes an obstacle. We try in different ways (providing
information, free consultancy…) to stimulate schools to set up a wider project than
merely playing the Traffic Snake Game.
• We need a lot of information from the schools. It takes a lot of time to gather this
information.
• Schools have to send the banners back after playing the game so we can use them
again the next year. Getting the game materials for free is one of the big incentives
to register for the campaign each year. In case the schools would get to keep the
material, the incentive to play the game would disappear.
• We are not sure of the sponsoring of KBC insurances for 2008-2009 and afterwards.
Through the sponsoring it is possible to provide the game and guidance free of
charge for the schools.
The Traffic Snake Game is interesting project for BAMBINI, because it is a basic game,
easy to implement and it stimulates schools to set up mobility projects. Officially this
project is designed for primary schools, but a lot of kindergartens join as well. Potential
for Bambini is to design a concept that fits kindergarten more.
In Belgium the give incentives to schools to stimulate them to do more than playing the
game. (free consultancy, set up co-operation with the community,…). This works really
well. This idea is useful for BAMBINI as well.
Walking buses
Project holder Maison de l’environnement de Morsang-sur-Orge (Service Municipal)
House for Environment of Morsang-sur Orge (City Departement)
Title: Walking buses to preschool
Type: Kindergarten
Short description:
The walking bus is an initiative to stimulate walking to school. Children walk together to
school with one or two parents. Therefore parents don’t need to bring their child to
school everyday. During the walking bus week, the teacher pays extra attention to
walking, through the awareness material and to talk about the walking bus with children.
In France it is organized by “Maison de l’Environnement”. Four walking bus lines have
been set up for one kindergarten and one primary school, thanks to some active parents
and the support of the “Maison de l’Environnement”.
Target group: Children from kindergarten and primary schools.
During the walking bus week of “Maison de l’Environnement” over 112 pupils in the
preschool, 10 children attended the operation (8 families). The pupils from elementary
school participated more (89 children).

Barriers / success
factors:
Available material:
Barriers
• Lack of motivation from teachers
• Difference of timetable between preschool (start at 8:20) and school (start at 8:30)
• Parents are preoccupied: parents prefer to accompany by car their younger children
to preschool.
Success factors
• Initiative on parents: it is really a key of success when the parents take the
initiative in setting up a walking bus project and gave a starting boost to the project.
• Motivation and awareness of parents: parents must be motivated by the project.
So it is important to explain them during meetings the benefits of walking and
learning how to walk on early age.
• Motivation of children: children’s good testimony from previous operation prompt
children who were doubtful to participate.
• Measurement: setting up of a ‘pedometer’ gives sense of responsibility to children
and help them to understand the meaning of the operation.
• Awareness of children: each child drops a colour ball into a jar according to his/her
mode of transport (each mode is represented by a colour) and sort out the balls by
colour at the end of the day (per class or school);
• Emphasis the participation of parents and children: measure the participation
(i.e. “pedometer” or counting) and communicate the results to teachers, children and
parents (letter, flyer, exhibition at school...)
• Make it an event: at each operation, with the cooperation of parents and teachers,
try to find activities to combine the walking bus with, such as Mobility hat conquest,
Musical welcome, Donkey days, Breakfast welcome etc.
Materials “I walk to school”:
• poster
• flyer (for children)
• postcard (about parking on walk side or bike path)
• parents guidelines
There are also information meetings for parents and teachers
Walking to the kindergarten together with your children, going by scooter or by
bike. There are a lot of ideas for primary school, which can be used for
kindergarten. This campaign is a German campaign. Maybe it is possible to
start an European campaign.
Activities for promotion of cycling
Country: Greece
Partner name: REACM-ANATOLIKI S.A.
Title: Activities for promotion of cycling in Children’s Creativity Centres
Type: Kindergarten (Children’s Creativity Centres)
Short description:
Target group: Children
Barriers / success
factors:
The Municipality of Karditsa is considered a pioneer city in cycling, at least in Greece.
Every year during European Mobility Week a range of activities and events are
organised, related to cycling, i.e. bike races and games, wall graffiti, bike-ribbons etc.
The municipal Children’s Creativity Centres participate at these events. The main goal is
to encourage small children to use alternative transport modes and more specific cycling.
The activities usually carried out are:
- writing of mottos and painting of bikes or relevant subjects on roll-on cardboard
- construction of pins from fuzzy wire depicting bikes
Success factor
A very high percentage of people in Municipality of Karditsa use the bike for short
distance travelling. Thus, citizens and more specifically young parents, are favourable to
cycling and are positive to any activity that encourages use of bike by children. This
positive attitude of parents is the main success factor for all the activities implemented.
Barrier
Financial barriers hinder implementation of activities. This year no activities were
implemented in Municipality of Karditsa during European Mobility Week, due to lack of
funds.
Fairy tale – First day at school
Country: Greece
Partner name: ANATOLIKI S.A.-REACM
Title: Fairy Tale: “First day at school… A different kind of promenade”
Type: Kindergarten
Short description:
Inspired by its participation in the BAMBINI Project, ANATOLIKI S.A. elaborated a fairy
tale to promote “walking to kindergarten”. The fairy tale in animation cartoon form (PPT
format) was presented to nine (9) municipal kindergartens of the Municipality of
Kalamaria, in Greece, approaching 350 children 3-4,5 years old.
The activity was funded by the Mobility Centre of the Municipality of Kalamaria and was
implemented during European Mobility Week (16-22 September 2009).
Aim of the activity was to promote sustainable modes of transport used by pupils for
going to school. Objectives of the activity were:
• To discourage car use
• To make children aware about alternative ways to go to school
To explain children the benefits of going to school on foot.
Implementation of the main activity:
A fairy tale to discourage car use and promote walking to kindergarten, was presented to
children. The story was in animation cartoon form. A short summary of the story is given
below:

Short description:
“Dafni and Peter, twin sister and brother, are going to kindergarten by car. It is their first
day at school and they are very happy. The car is suddenly broken down and they
decide to go to kindergarten on foot. They enjoy walking, as they can feel the sun, smell
nice odours, enjoy the green, glance at store windows and the same time talk with their
mother for all these new experiences. Moreover, while walking to school, they meet new
people and make new friends.
At the kindergarten, the teacher asks all children to describe how they have arrived at
school. Dafni and Peter describe their morning experience and express their satisfaction
for coming to kindergartner on foot instead of using a car. The teacher encourages
children to avoid car ride and to prefer alternative transport modes.
At the end of the story the advantages of avoiding car use are illustrated: i.e, avoid traffic
congestion, improve air quality, decrease noise pollution, protect natural environment,
improve our health, save money, make more friends, have more open space. Moreover,
the alternative transport modes are illustrated: bike, skate, bus, walking, train.
At the end of the presentation the children were asked how they are coming to school
and if they would like to use alternative transport modes instead of cars.
Additional activities:
• Education materials for kindergarten
Electronic (CD) and hard (booklets) copies of the “Fairy tale” were delivered to the
pedagogues (teachers) of each kindergarten.
• Distribution of advertising blouses
Blouses promoting alternative modes of transport to school were distributed to children
at the end of each presentation.
• Leaflets for parents
Target group: Children, Parents
Barriers / success
factors:
An informative leaflet was distributed to parents. The leaflet underlined the negative
impacts of car use to the environment and to children’s’ health, in order to encourage
parents to take their children to kindergarten by sustainable means of transport.
Moreover, information about BAMBINI Project was included in this leaflet to inform
parents about the aims and objectives of the project.
Success Factors
The “Fairy tale” was connected to children’s every day life. The heroes, Dafni and Peter,
were two 4 year old kids who go to kindergarten.
The “Fairy tale” presentation had not a simple narrative character. Two people narrate
the story in the form of a dialogue, while the children participated in the story through
questions. More specifically, at first, the children where asked about the impacts of car
use and the alternative transport modes they know and then the respective slides of the
story were illustrated to them. Moreover, at the end of the story they were asked how
they are coming to school and if they would like to use alternative transport modes
instead of cars.

Barriers / success
factors:
Available material:
The presentation is in the form of animation cartoon, has lively colours and is short (30
min), which contribute in maintaining childrens’ attention.
The long time impact of the activity was ensured through distribution of “souvenirs”
(shirts) to the children and delivery of the respective education materials to pedagogues.
Barriers
Technical Barriers hindered the implementation of the activity in some kindergartens.
Some kindergarten lack adequate rooms for projecting the “Presentation”, with result to
some of the children to have a limited view.
Available material:
- Fairy Tale in Power Point Presentation
- Fairy Tale Booklet
- Shirts depicting alternative transport modes for going to school
- Information leaflet about the impact of car use on environment and children’s’ health
distributed to parents
