the Ørptveit Farm Museum represents a typical farm of the<br />

coastal regions. the farm yard and buildings depict living conditions<br />

of the period from 1850 – 1950. see and experience<br />

the buildings in their cultural surroundings: the white-painted<br />

farmhouse, the stave-built barn with untreated wood, the stone<br />

curing room, potato cellar and well. the area is open, adjacent<br />

to haugesund and is excellent for excursions by car or bike, or<br />

after shopping at amanda shopping centre. info board available.<br />

nedstrand village museum<br />

in bygone times nedstrand was a customs post and “capital”<br />

of Ryfylke, and today still serves as a ferry connection point<br />

between the south and east. discover the local history by visiting<br />

the many sections of the village museum: gamle stranda<br />

school occupies the main section and includes offices, meeting<br />

rooms and periodic exhibitions. the youth centre at Baustad<br />

has a thematic exhibition depicting working and day-to-day<br />

life in the 1900s. at Leiranger there are stone walls that were<br />

once part of a boathouse used in viking times as a coastal<br />

defencesystem. at the outdoor recreational area at Leira,<br />

nessa school has been rebuilt with an interior dating from<br />

hiltahuset<br />

if you take the scheduled ferry from the centre of haugesund<br />

to Rovær, then hiltahuset is well worth a visit. hiltahuset<br />

is Røvær’s oldest house and also the island’s museum.<br />

it is situated beside the island’s chapel and school. the<br />

house is named after the last family to live there. a separate<br />

exhibition depicts the Røvær accident of 1899 when<br />

30 of the island’s 100 inhabitants lost their lives in a storm<br />

at sea while returning from a funeral in haugesund. open:<br />

norsk motor museum<br />

at the Motor Museum in skånevik the visitor can get an overview<br />

of small boat engines produced in norway. the engines are renovated<br />

and in their original colours. in addition, the museum<br />

has a section featuring farm machinery and local curiosities<br />

such as an aerial cableway, aggregates, fire pumps etc.<br />

plassbakeriet bakery<br />

the bakery Plassbakeriet was established in 1842 by georg<br />

gautesen. the bakery, which is very small, is idyllically located<br />

at the edge of Ålfjorden Fjord in vikebygd. during the summer<br />

you can participate in the traditional baking process using a<br />

wood-fired oven. see our homepage for baking days. open<br />

sandbekken hamlet<br />

sandbekken Bygdetun village is a small collection of old build-<br />

ings, which includes the Cleng Peerson house. the house was<br />

moved here in 1975 in conjunction with the 150-year commemoration<br />

of emigration to america. Cleng Peerson from tysvær<br />

led the first group of Quakers who sailed from stavanger<br />

on the Restaurationen in 1825. sandbekken has dwellings<br />

with names such as “bed house” and “glass house”. these<br />

dwellings have a building style that was common in the 1600s<br />

and 1700s, in addition to the smoke curing rooms that, in this<br />

region, were inhabited. sandbekken, with its bathing areas, is<br />

also a popular excursion destination. Open: only by appointment.<br />

Journey to america<br />

When visiting sandbekken one should also use the occasion<br />

to visit the exhibition Journey to america, which covers the<br />

period between 1825 and 1920 when many people travelled<br />

to the the Land of opportunity. the exhibition is housed in the<br />

library at tysvær Kulturhus and tells the history of these people<br />

through photos, texts, coulisses, and various other objects.<br />
