ANTIQUITIES IN THE MUSEUM AT PALERMO. 161<br />

The " Lapidarium Septentrionale " gives only a s<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>in</strong>stance<br />

of this peculiarity, viz. from Hunnum, Hal<strong>to</strong>n<br />

Chesters.<br />

CHO. VIII<br />

> CAECILI<br />

CLIIME 1<br />

No. 80, an elegaic couplet, records <strong>in</strong> epigrammatic<br />

terms <strong>the</strong> death of a centenarian.<br />

P. P.<br />

Csesius iEquidicus had completed his hundredth year; a<br />

brief hour ended so many happy years—erected at <strong>the</strong><br />

public expense. 3<br />

We come now <strong>to</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r class of <strong>in</strong>scriptions, quite<br />

different from <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g with respect <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir contents and <strong>the</strong> material on <strong>which</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are stamped,<br />

These his<strong>to</strong>ric documents refer <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> potteries and were<br />

impressed upon bricks, tiles, and o<strong>the</strong>r ceramic products.<br />

They are <strong>in</strong> a high degree both difficult and <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The obscurity results from three causes ; <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first place,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is often no mark, like <strong>the</strong> cross <strong>in</strong> Saxon or Early<br />

English co<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>to</strong> show where <strong>the</strong> sentence beg<strong>in</strong>s;<br />

secondly, <strong>the</strong>re are many ligatures <strong>which</strong> may be <strong>in</strong>terpreted<br />

<strong>in</strong> different ways ; thirdly, mistakes were made by<br />

<strong>the</strong> labourers who cut <strong>the</strong> stamps or dies. The substance<br />

employed be<strong>in</strong>g comparatively of little value, we cannot<br />

expect that <strong>the</strong> same care would be taken as when an <strong>in</strong>scription<br />

commemorat<strong>in</strong>g an important event was engraved<br />

on bronze or marble, and placed <strong>in</strong> a temple or basilica.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest also is manifold : <strong>the</strong> chronologist f<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

42, p. 160, <strong>in</strong> his note says that II is <strong>the</strong><br />

same as <strong>the</strong> Greek H, and refers <strong>to</strong> el.<br />

xiii, No. 3, <strong>which</strong> ends with BHNH<br />

IIHRHNTI FHCHK. The comb<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong><br />

two languages <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions at<br />

Palermo bears witness <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> mixed<br />

character of <strong>the</strong> population that <strong>in</strong>habited<br />

<strong>Sicily</strong> <strong>in</strong> ancient times.<br />

1 "Lapid. Septentr.," p. 55, No. 100 ;<br />

Bruce, "Roman Wall," 4<strong>to</strong>. ed., p. 142 ;<br />

<strong>in</strong> both cases a fac-simile is engraved.<br />

Dr. Bruce observes that <strong>the</strong> substitution<br />

CHO for COH is not uncommon. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>scription maybe translated—<strong>the</strong> century<br />

VOL. XXXVIII.<br />

of Ca;cilius Clemens belong<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Eighth Cohort.<br />

2 Torremuzza, "S.VI.." cl. xiv, No. 27,<br />

p. 178 ; this epitaph is conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

Gruter's collection and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong><br />

Anthology ; <strong>the</strong> latter has a various<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g, vixerat for clauserat. Torremuzza<br />

is sometimes quoted as Castellus or<br />

Castello ; his fall name and title are<br />

Gabriele Lancillot<strong>to</strong> Castello, Pr<strong>in</strong>cipe<br />

di Torremuzza. Eckhel, " Doct. Num.<br />

Vet.," calls him Pr<strong>in</strong>ceps T.M., i.e. Turris<br />

Mutite.<br />
