3.0 <strong>Cultural</strong> Roles<br />

The icons on the map representing the City’s cultural facilities have been designed to provide<br />

information on the roles a facility plays in serving the local and wider community. The four<br />

categories identify the four roles that the municipality plays in the cultural life <strong>of</strong> the City;<br />

> Hub: supporting cultural activity in diverse communities.<br />

> <strong>Inc</strong>ubator: supporting the artists <strong>of</strong> the City.<br />

> Showcase: supporting culture in the City’s tourism economy.<br />

> <strong>Cultural</strong> Memory Sites: supporting culture as a heritage resource.<br />

3.1 Hubs<br />

<strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>of</strong> this type have some or all <strong>of</strong> the following characteristics:<br />

> Local, community and neighbourhood pr<strong>of</strong>ile and presence<br />

> Accommodates multiple users and uses<br />

> Of interest or appeal primarily to specific cultural, socio-economic or geographic<br />

community<br />

> Has the potential to nurture cultural activities at a local level<br />

> Presents work developed in <strong>Inc</strong>ubators<br />

> Diffuses economic and cultural impact <strong>of</strong> showcases throughout the city<br />

> Primarily consists <strong>of</strong> non-traditional performance and exhibition venues (i.e. churches,<br />

warehouses, community centres, etc.)<br />

> Examples include: Trinity St. Paul’s, Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts, North<br />

Toronto Collegiate, Art Starts, Cedar Ridge Creative Centre, Withrow Park<br />

3.2 <strong>Inc</strong>ubators<br />

<strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>of</strong> this type have some or all <strong>of</strong> the following characteristics:<br />

> Cultivates new artists and/or new art forms<br />

> Contributes to the ongoing development <strong>of</strong> artists and/or art forms<br />

> Houses an environment that fosters and encourages growth, development, education<br />

and training<br />

> Functions as a hothouse for the creation <strong>of</strong> new ideas, approaches, products<br />

> Examples include: Tarragon Theatre, York University, Buddies in Bad Times, Neilson<br />

Park Creative Centre<br />
