Chapter V: The L<strong>at</strong>in Martha Texts<br />

Summary<br />

Previous. research has suggested th<strong>at</strong> the Sanctuarium (5a<br />

and not MS E. was the original for the F and C5 French<br />

Martha transl<strong>at</strong>ions. Section I of this chapter shows th<strong>at</strong><br />

this research is incomplete and misleading, and section II<br />

demýanstr<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> in fact E is considerably closer than Sa<br />

to both French transl<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

In section III, cases of agreement between F,. and C5,<br />

where both differ from L<strong>at</strong>in E. are used to show th<strong>at</strong> in<br />

places E must be different from the lost L<strong>at</strong>in originals<br />

used by the two French transl<strong>at</strong>ors.,<br />

Divergencies between the two French transl<strong>at</strong>ions,<br />

examined in section IV, indic<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> the transl<strong>at</strong>ors used<br />

L<strong>at</strong>in originals th<strong>at</strong> were different from each other, and<br />

th<strong>at</strong> the source used by the C5 transl<strong>at</strong>or, while being close<br />

to E, also has some fe<strong>at</strong>ures in common with Sa.<br />

The schema in section V illustr<strong>at</strong>es the put<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ionships between the two L<strong>at</strong>in and two French texts<br />

discussed in this chapter.<br />
