Pre-Paramedic Preparation – Class 8<br />

This 68-hour course is designed to prepare EMT-Bs for<br />

successful entry into a paramedic program. Continuing<br />

education hours will be granted for EMT CE<br />

requirements.<br />

Paramedic Program Orientation<br />

& Application – Class 8<br />

Admission to the Paramedic Program is determined by<br />

qualifi cations and testing. Applicants must have a<br />

current EMT-B or EMT-II license. Applicants are required<br />

to pass EMT-B written and skill examinations. Candidates<br />

who pass testing will be assigned an interview.<br />

Math and English Assessment<br />

All applicants must take the <strong>Fresno</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> Math<br />

and English assessment tests. Testing dates and times<br />

are listed on the <strong>FCC</strong> Web site. Please bring your<br />

assessment results to orientation.<br />

Paramedic Program – Class 8<br />

The paramedic program provides a comprehensive<br />

classroom and clinical experience totaling 1154 hours.<br />

Upon your successful completion of all phases of the<br />

program you will earn a certifi cate of completion.<br />

Your certifi cate of completion will allow you to apply<br />

for the National Registry examination.<br />

This paramedic program meets or exceeds the requirements<br />

in the State of California Safety Code, Title<br />

22; and mirrors the National Paramedic Curriculum<br />

developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.<br />

Program <strong>Training</strong> Phases:<br />

Didactic: Classroom training consisting of 504<br />

hours of lectures, discussions, case-based scenarios,<br />

skill demonstrations, skill labs, and other activities.<br />

Blackboard, an e-learning platform will be utilized for<br />

portions of this training, including: selected assignments,<br />

quizzes, and research.<br />

Clinical: Clinical education consisting of at least 160<br />

hours completed under supervision of a preceptor<br />

in various medical departments such as: emergency;<br />

ICU; laboratory; labor and delivery; PICU; pediatrics;<br />

cardiac care; surgery; and others. Your schedule will<br />

vary based upon clinical site assignments. Your clinical<br />

education will begin after your successful didactic<br />

completion.<br />

Field Internship: The internship training consists of<br />

at least 480 hours of fi re service or ambulance service<br />

(ALS) under the supervision of a preceptor. During the<br />

internship you will assess, extricate, and treat patients<br />

in a pre-hospital setting. Your schedule will vary and<br />

may include 12 or 24-hour days. You must be able to<br />

accept internships throughout California in order to<br />

complete the internship. There may be a fee associated<br />

with some internships, this fee is the student’s<br />

responsibility and is above and beyond the program<br />

tuition. Your fi eld internship will begin after your successful<br />

clinical education.<br />

Advisory: Field experience as a certifi ed EMT-B is<br />

strongly suggested. A pre-course examination is<br />

required for entrance to the program. Interested<br />

applicants are strongly urged to attend the Pre-Paramedic<br />

course.<br />

48-Hour Paramedic Refresher<br />

Take this 48-hour continuing education to meet the<br />

requirements set forth by the Department of Transportation<br />

and the National Registry of Emergency<br />

Medical Technicians.<br />

How to provide ventilatory support for a patient<br />

How to care for a patient experiencing cardiovascular<br />

compromise<br />

How to resuscitate a patient in cardiac arrest<br />

Assess and care for a patient experiencing an allergic<br />

reaction<br />

Assess and provide care to a near-drowning patient<br />

How to perform a rapid trauma assessment<br />

Provide care to patients with: suspected spinal<br />

injury; open abdominal injury; head injury; chest<br />

injury; and shock<br />

Assess and provide care to an infant or child with:<br />

cardiac arrest; shock; respiratory distress; and<br />

trauma<br />
