on the Circle.
At last nights mixer
we had the opportunity to
mingle with the owner and
founder of the Big Cat
Habitat, Kay Rosarie. Also
on hand were John Halbert
President of Sarasota Sister
cities along with Gale
Maxey, Sarasota Sister Cities
Events chair. It was a
pleasure to have Donna Baal
join us. She handled our
clubs accounting for the
past ten years. Plan now to
be at the next B2B it’s a
great way to meet new
people.
Remembering Edwin (Ed) Wheeler
E d W h e e l e r , a
great man and a great
Rotarian. For many years
Ed played a key role in the
success of our club. We
stand strong today in part
b e c a u s e o f t h e
contributions of his time
talent and treasure.
Ed, f ormerly of
Longboat Key, Fla. and
Washington, D.C. passed
away at his home on Feb.

graduate of the Washburn
University School of Law
and was admitted to the
Kansas Bar in 1955. He
served as a Captain in the
United States Army.
A memorial service
will be held on Friday, Feb.
24th at 1:30 p.m. at All
A n g e l s b y t h e S e a
Episcopal Church.

Sorry I could not join
you today. I am attending a
luncheon meeting for the
Juvenile Diabetes walk.
T h e G o v e r n o r o f
Florida visited The Sarasota
M ilitary Academy last
Friday. He spent about one
hour there and was very
pleased with this Charter
school. They went all out
with full military uniforms.
The Newspapers described
how the school was started.
The founder was given as
Dan Kennedy which is
partially correct. Burt
Bershon a former member of
the Sarasota keys Rotary
club, conceived the idea and
he and Dan Kennedy started
the school 8 years ago. Burt
died less than a year ago and
I hope someday they will
name some part of the school
after him.
Here is some bad
news. Ed Wheeler passed
away. Ed a former long time
member of the Keys club left
Rotary a year ago due to
Illness. He was an Attorney
in Kansas and rose to the
rank of captain in the
military. Ed and I would
a l w a y s g o o d n a t u r a l l y
discuss politics when we sat
together. I am a Democrat
and he was a Republican.
( B u t h e w a s a g o o d
Republican) We both went to
the same Barber in Sarasota
and whenever I went there
the Barber would say your
Friend Ed was asking for
you. I have an appointment
for a Haircut next week. I
hope the Barber doesn't say
Ed was asking for you.
