According to tradition,<br />
St. Valentine was a priest near<br />
Rome in about <strong>the</strong> year 270 A.D.<br />
At that time, Roman Emperor<br />
Claudius-II issued an edict<br />
forbidding marriage.<br />
The heyday <strong>of</strong> Roman<br />
empire was swiftly coming to an<br />
end. Lack <strong>of</strong> quality<br />
administrators led to frequent<br />
civil strife. Learning declined,<br />
taxation increased, and trade<br />
slumped to a low, precarious<br />
level. The empire had grown too<br />
large to be shielded from external<br />
aggression and internal chaos. As<br />
a result, more <strong>of</strong> capable men<br />
were required to be recruited as<br />
soldiers and <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />

When Claudius became<br />
<strong>the</strong> emperor, he felt that married<br />
men were more emotionally<br />
attached to <strong>the</strong>ir families, and<br />
thus, would not make good<br />
soldiers. So to assure quality<br />
soldiers, he banned marriage.<br />
Valentine, a bishop,<br />
seeing <strong>the</strong> trauma <strong>of</strong> young<br />
lovers, met <strong>the</strong>m in a secret<br />
place, and joined <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong><br />
sacrament <strong>of</strong> matrimony. Claudius<br />
learned <strong>of</strong> this "friend <strong>of</strong> lovers,"<br />
and had him arrested. The<br />
emperor, impressed with <strong>the</strong><br />
young priest's dignity and<br />
conviction, attempted to convert<br />
him to <strong>the</strong> roman gods, to save<br />
him from certain execution.<br />
Valentine refused to<br />
recognize Roman Gods and even<br />
attempted to convert <strong>the</strong><br />
emperor, knowing <strong>the</strong><br />
consequences fully.<br />
While in prison awaiting his fate,<br />
he came in contact with his<br />
jailor, Asterius who had a blind<br />
daughter.<br />
Asterius requested that<br />
St. Valentine pray for his<br />
Service Above Self<br />
daughter. Through his faith, her<br />
sight was miraculously restored.<br />
Before his execution, he<br />
asked for a pen and paper from<br />
his jailor, and signed a farewell<br />
message to her "From Your<br />
Valentine."<br />

I n 496 A.D., Pope<br />
Gelasius set aside February 14 to<br />
honor St. Valentine. He became a<br />
Patron Saint, and spiritual<br />
overseer <strong>of</strong> an annual festival.<br />
The festival involved young<br />
Romans <strong>of</strong>fering women <strong>the</strong>y<br />
admired, and wished to court,<br />
handwritten greetings <strong>of</strong> affection.<br />

years now we have been blessed<br />
to have a special program<br />
which is as good as any<br />
Broadway show you can see.<br />
The Booker High<br />
School group has been<br />
performing for our club for<br />
almost 10 years. They have won<br />
many awards in shows all over<br />
<strong>Florida</strong> and in o<strong>the</strong>r states as<br />
well. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students have<br />
gone on to perform in shows at<br />
<strong>the</strong> Player's Theatre. Some have<br />
even been accepted at Juliard<br />
we hope you will enjoy <strong>the</strong><br />
show as well as we enjoy<br />
bringing it to you every year.<br />
And has become our tradition,<br />
any happy dollars collected will<br />
be donated to <strong>the</strong> Booker group<br />
