Good! 21 28 Team Stats Doniphan West Valley Flu Shot Clinics At Polling Places National Initiative On Election Day 2012, those who go to polling places in Marshall County will find that they can do more than vote— —they can get a flu shot. Marshall County Health Department will be setting up flu shot clinics at every polling site in Marshall County. This is a part of a nationwide pilot program to help improve the health of all Americans. We have chosen to be one of the growing number of health organizations across the country participating in Vote & Vax, a national project to encourage the hosting of flu clinics at polling sites. This is a great opportunity for everyone, but particularly adults age 50 and older who are especially vulnerable to illness during flu season, to safely and conveniently receive a flu shot from a medical professional while also voting. Each year, as many as 60 million people in the United Stated come down with the flu. Hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized and more than 36,000 people die as a result of the flu. The majority of those who die are adults age 50 and over. It is important that people take all precautions to ensure they stay healthy. This is why the staff at Marshall County Health Department is providing voters and other community members with easy access to flu shots at polling places to help protect their health and the health of the community. Election Day represents a good opportunity for us to make contact with a large cross section of the community. Great effort is expanded on Election Day to get people to the polls. Because of this, we can vaccinate many people who may otherwise not be reached. The big event of the evening was when the game was delayed because of lighting. Valley Heights Cross Country Team Has Poor Showing By Jerrika Chase Falling short of their potential the Valley Heights Cross Country team faced disappointment at Riley County on October 6th. Alec Doner, jr., the only runner on the boy’s team to improved their time, said that the disappointing meet could have been because of “the cold weather bringing us down and our stamina was down.” One way Doner kept his momentum up and stayed focused was by simply, “working harder.” Adrian Pishny, 8th, used Doner’s advice by working outside of practice to keep up with his fellow teammates, “I always try to beat the person in front of me, even if they’re on my team.” Pishny, being the youngest male on the team, bravely joked, “I feel different from my teammates. Maybe taller, but I’m fine with it.” Due to Pishny’s young age he is not eligible to medal at every meet but participates as often as he can because of his passion for running. Doner hopes at their next meet in Onaga, which is also TVL, they can get their passion and drive back and take it all. Riley County Results: Men’s High School competition had 154 runners: Max Blaske 71st place Blake Woodyard 90th place Alec Doner 91st place Benny Bargdill 143rd place Men’s Junior High competition had 14 runners. DeAndra Woodyard 4th place Deer Season Means Defensive Driving Needed Deer and driving...it’s time to be prepared, according to Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance. “Constant defensive driving on Kansas roads and highways is a must during this fall’s deer mating season,” Commissioner Praeger said. “Be vigilant when you take the wheel.” Mid-fall is a likely time of the year for deer to be seen on roadways. Sunrise and sunset are the times they are most active around roadways. Accidents involving deer cause almost $4 billion in vehicle damage yearly in the United States, according to statistics from the Insurance Information Institute. The average property damage is estimated at more than $3,000 per vehicle. “I urge Kansas motorists to check with their insurance agents or companies to find out if they have physical damage coverage (comprehensive and collision) on their vehicle policies,” Commissioner Praeger said. “If not, they should get a quote to find out the additional premium charge to add that coverage, just so you have all the necessary information.” The Commissioner also emphasizes two factors: For consumers who have only a liability policy, any damage in a deer/vehicle collision would not be covered by insurance. Second, the higher the deductible a person has, the more out-of-pocket costs that person will have to pay. To help avoid deer-vehicle collisions, Commissioner Praeger suggests the following: * Stay alert, always wear your seat belt and drive at a safe, sensible speed for conditions. * Watch for the reflection of deer eyes and for deer silhouettes on the shoulder of the road. * Do not rely exclusively on devices such as deer whistles, deer fences and reflectors to deter deer. * If you see one deer, there are probably more nearby. The State of Kansas is asking voter for the right to change the amount of taxes they may or may not decide to tax water craft. The Ballot is confusing because the Amendments list Real Property, Land, Vacant Lots and the percentage that must be taxed. Even though the ballot lists all of the other taxable items it is only the Water Craft that is being changed and the Legislators are asking you to give them the right to tax (and what amount) or to not tax at all. It would be up to the State Legislature. Main Street Program To Undergo Big Changes The Kansas Department of Commerce announces today a plan that will transition the Kansas Main Street program to local control. The Department announced on Sept. 20 that it was ending the Main Street program at the state level because of expected smaller state and federal budgets moving forward. “The decision to end a program like Kansas Main Street program was not an easy one,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George. “However, in light of our future budget constraints, the Commerce Department must focus on programs that impact the most communities and businesses as we work to expand economic development and grow private-sector jobs Contact Dave or Keith 562-2338 562-3336 Come on out for a free estimate at 742 Pony Express Hwy. west of Marysville statewide.” After the Sept. 20 announcement, the Department began working with Main Street communities to transition the program out of state control. A key part of the program has been the $3.7 million in Incentive Without Walls (IWW) funding that has been used by 35 communities since 1996. IWW funding is loaned to communities to help with various downtown business needs. Current IWW funding in use by communities can continue to be utilized by those communities as long as it is used for economic development and downtown revitalization efforts. Those communities will continue to submit annual reports on IWW funding to the Department.
