The Regi<strong>on</strong>al seminar <strong>on</strong> Aquaculture development in South east<br />

Asia (ADSEA) held in Philippines in 1987 (SEAFDBC, 1988) assessed the<br />

progress and success accomplished in aquaculture in the light <strong>of</strong> the<br />

then and future needs and challenges.<br />

"Aquaculture systems and <strong>practices</strong>: A selected Review“<br />

commissi<strong>on</strong>ed by Aquaculture Development and co-ordinati<strong>on</strong>, Programme<br />

(HAO, 1989) has reviewed the aquaculture methods and <strong>practices</strong>, as well<br />

general c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s in the choice <strong>of</strong> culture systems. Tfiue review<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cluded that "the success <strong>of</strong> aquaculture can <strong>on</strong>ly be attained through<br />

proper management based <strong>on</strong> a knowledge/understanding <strong>of</strong> the culture,<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment and the biological processes involved in the culture<br />

operati<strong>on</strong> as well as <strong>on</strong> the existence/availability <strong>of</strong> certain vital<br />

inputs - such as seed, feed, manpower, finance and technology".<br />

Recently, Pillay (1990) has brought out an excellent treatise<br />

<strong>on</strong> practical low level technologies resulting in c0st—effective<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> in aquaculture in a multi disciplinary manner covering all<br />

major aspects <strong>of</strong> the subject.<br />

Latest in the series is the FAO (UN) Fisheries Technical Paper:<br />

318 [Meaden. and Kapetsky, 1991) entitled "Geographical in<strong>for</strong>mati<strong>on</strong><br />

systems and remote sensing in Inland Fisheries and aquaculture which<br />

has dealt with capabilities <strong>of</strong> 110 districts to support fish <strong>farming</strong><br />

development.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong>, a number <strong>of</strong> exclusive journals and other<br />

publicati<strong>on</strong>s from different countries:<br />

Philippines - Aqua Farm News, Asian Aquaculture from SEAFDEC, Naga,<br />
