Prior to examination <strong>of</strong> cranes:<br />

5.1 Access & Egress<br />

The Competent Person shall make their presence known to a responsible<br />

person at the location. At the end <strong>of</strong> his visit the Competent Person shall<br />

advise that person that they are leaving the site.<br />

5.2 Unoccupied Premises<br />

Under no circumstance shall the Competent Person work alone at<br />

unoccupied premises or carry out any examination at premises where no<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the clients staff ( or other responsible person) is present.<br />

5.3 Appropriate Clothing<br />

Competent Persons shall wear suitable protective clothing <strong>and</strong> equipment<br />

eg. Safety helmet, boiler suit, gloves, suitable safety boots or shoes, <strong>and</strong><br />

safety harness. All shall be maintained in good condition <strong>and</strong> properly<br />

worn.<br />

5.4 Personal Protection & Safety Equipment<br />

Other personal protection <strong>and</strong> safety equipment shall be worn according<br />

to the site conditions <strong>and</strong> clients site safe systems <strong>of</strong> work. eg. eye<br />

protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, personal buoyancy<br />

equipment, <strong>and</strong> respiratory protective equipment.<br />

5.5 <strong>Inspection</strong> Plan<br />

Competent Persons shall plan the sequence <strong>of</strong> their examination prior to<br />

commencement. This is essential when undertaking the examination <strong>of</strong><br />

mobile <strong>and</strong> crawler cranes, with regard to health <strong>and</strong> safety.<br />

Planning should include the following:<br />

a. Suitable <strong>and</strong> satisfactory on site procedures must be in place <strong>and</strong><br />

capable <strong>of</strong> being initiated, in the event <strong>of</strong> an accident.<br />

b. Briefing <strong>of</strong> the responsible person on site <strong>and</strong> plant driver/operator<br />

as to the sequence <strong>of</strong> examination.<br />

c. Banksman (where used) <strong>and</strong> plant driver/operator must fully<br />

underst<strong>and</strong> the examination procedure <strong>and</strong> the system <strong>of</strong> h<strong>and</strong><br />

signals to be used where applicable. All personnel must underst<strong>and</strong><br />

the emergency signals <strong>and</strong> procedures.<br />

d. <strong>Examination</strong>s <strong>of</strong> mobile plant should be away from regular site<br />

traffic <strong>and</strong> site routes. This will reduce the risk from being struck by,<br />

<strong>and</strong> striking, other site traffic <strong>and</strong> site personnel.<br />

e. Ensure ground conditions are sound <strong>and</strong> will fully support the plant<br />

to be inspected in all examination positions, without risk <strong>of</strong><br />

overturning due to ground instability.<br />
