Members who have moved into <strong>the</strong> new building are very enthusiastic about<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir offices.<br />
ENRICO BOMBIERI was nominated "Chevaher de I'ordre des Palmes Acade-<br />
miques," after ending a three-year period in an international advising committee<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Minister of Education of France. He was also awarded <strong>the</strong> International<br />
Prize "Gerolamo Cardano" from <strong>the</strong> University of Pavia. ROBERT LANG-<br />
LANDS was elected to <strong>the</strong> National Academy of Sciences and was granted an<br />
honorary Doctor of Science degree at <strong>the</strong> University of Toronto. In January,<br />
LUIS CAFFARELLI delivered <strong>the</strong> Colloquium Lectures at <strong>the</strong> annual meeting<br />
of <strong>the</strong> American Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Society in San Antonio on "Nonlinear Differential<br />
Equations and Lagrangian Coordinates." In <strong>the</strong> Fall of <strong>1992</strong> ARMAND BOREL<br />
received <strong>the</strong> International E. Balzan Prize <strong>for</strong> his "fundamental contributions to<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory of Lie groups, algebraic groups and arithmetic groups." <strong>The</strong> Balzan<br />
prize is offered in <strong>the</strong> physical, ma<strong>the</strong>matical and natural sciences as well as <strong>for</strong><br />
literature and humanity. Borel retires at <strong>the</strong> end of this year. Over <strong>the</strong> past 36<br />
years he has made great contributions to <strong>the</strong> intellectual life of our School and<br />
to that of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> as a whole.<br />
