work interrelated with Professor Witten's work mentioned above in a fashion
that is too complex to summarize here. Professor Witten's choice of problems in
(a) and (b) above was motivated partly by the fact that these particular points
are important in relation to mirror symmetry. One of his aspirations for the
future, so far unrequited, is to get a better explanation of mirror symmetry. He
also has been working intensively, but so far inconclusively, on the problem of
the cosmological constant in string theory.
