<strong>1992</strong>. His 1986 collection. Rival Views of Market Society and O<strong>the</strong>r Recent Essays, was<br />

published in a paperback edition, with a new preface by <strong>the</strong> author, by Harvard<br />

University Press, <strong>1992</strong>, and his Journeys toward Progress: Studies of Economic Policy-<br />

Making in Latin America, which was first published in 1963, was reprinted by <strong>the</strong><br />

Westview Press. <strong>The</strong> Rhetoric of Reaction (1991), which had already been translated<br />

into French, Italian, and Spanish, appeared in German and Portuguese editions.<br />

Professor Hirschman participated in a conference on "Social Justice and Inequali-<br />

ties" organized by <strong>the</strong> Commissariat General du Plan, Paris, in November <strong>1992</strong><br />

and presented a paper, "La rhetorique progressiste et le re<strong>for</strong>mateur" (Progressive<br />

rhetoric and <strong>the</strong> re<strong>for</strong>mer). This paper was published in <strong>the</strong> magazine Com-<br />

mentaire, Summer <strong>1993</strong>; subsequently, Professor Hirschman expanded it to a gen-<br />

eral retrospective article on <strong>The</strong> Rhetoric of Reaction.<br />

Professor Hirschman gave <strong>the</strong> II Mulino Lecture (a lecture sponsored annually<br />

by <strong>the</strong> publishing house II Mulino) in Bologna and a Political Economy Lecture<br />

at Harvard University. He also lectured at <strong>the</strong> universities of Coimbra (Portugal)<br />

and Zurich (Switzerland).<br />

In <strong>the</strong> fall semester of <strong>1992</strong>, a group of social scientists at M.l.T. held a seminar<br />

on <strong>the</strong> work of Professor Hirschman, with particular attention to his writings in<br />

<strong>the</strong> field of economic development. <strong>The</strong> papers and transcripts of <strong>the</strong> discussions<br />

were sent to Professor Hirschman, who presented some reflections, under <strong>the</strong><br />

title "A Propensity to Self-Subversion," at <strong>the</strong> last session of <strong>the</strong> seminar in<br />

December. A volume of essays based on <strong>the</strong> seminar presentations may be<br />

<strong>for</strong>thcoming.<br />

During May and June, Professor Hirschman returned to <strong>the</strong> Wissenschaftskolleg<br />

in Berlin as a permanent visiting fellow. In <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> academic year he<br />

received three honorary degrees: from <strong>the</strong> Universidad Internacional Melendez<br />

Pelayo in Santander (Spain) in July <strong>1992</strong>, from <strong>the</strong> University of Coimbra (Portugal)<br />

in April <strong>1993</strong>, and from <strong>the</strong> University of Paris-X (Nanterre) in May<br />

<strong>1993</strong>.<br />

During <strong>1992</strong>-93 PROFESSOR JOAN SCOTT delivered papers at <strong>the</strong> Univer-<br />

sity of Utrecht (Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands), <strong>the</strong> University of Sussex (England), and <strong>the</strong> Uni-<br />

versities of Buffalo and Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. She also gave papers at <strong>the</strong><br />

meetings of <strong>the</strong> American Historical Association and at <strong>the</strong> Berkshire Conference<br />

of Women Historians. In October, Professor Scott was <strong>the</strong> keynote speaker at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Food and Drug Law <strong>Institute</strong> Seminar in Washington, D.C. on "Women in<br />

Clinical Trials of FDA Regulated Products: Who Participates and Who Decides?"<br />

She conducted a seminar at <strong>the</strong> New York Psychoanalytic Association meetings.<br />
