ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES<br />

<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> advanced study<br />

Nineteen scholars, from an applicant pool of 266, were invited to join <strong>the</strong> permanent<br />

faculty in <strong>the</strong> School of Social Science scholarly community as Members<br />

and Visitors <strong>for</strong> <strong>1992</strong>-93; three research assistants also participated in <strong>the</strong> year's<br />

activities. <strong>The</strong> Mellon Foundation provided partial support <strong>for</strong> seven of <strong>the</strong> fel-<br />

lows, <strong>the</strong> National Endowment <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Humanities also provided support <strong>for</strong><br />

seven, and <strong>the</strong> Volkswagen Stiftung, one. <strong>The</strong> UPS Foundation provided general<br />

support <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> group of ten women and twelve men.<br />

Individuals in this group came from England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands, as well as <strong>the</strong> United States. <strong>The</strong>ir fields of inquiry were<br />

anthropology, three; folklore, one; history, seven; philosophy, one; political<br />

economy, one; political science, four; and sociology, five.<br />

In <strong>1992</strong>-93 <strong>the</strong> School concluded a three-year program on new perspectives on<br />

<strong>the</strong> history, sociology, and philosophy of <strong>the</strong> sciences and <strong>the</strong> social sciences,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> focus <strong>for</strong> this year on "<strong>The</strong> Philosophy and Sociology of Science":<br />

how conceptual systems arise and change, <strong>the</strong> intersection between science and<br />

government, and discussion about how knowledge is produced.<br />

PROFESSOR CLIFFORD GEERTZ was awarded <strong>the</strong> Fukuoka Asian Cultural<br />

Prize (<strong>Academic</strong>, International) <strong>for</strong> <strong>1992</strong>. He gave <strong>the</strong> keynote address to <strong>the</strong><br />

conference on "New Directions in Ethnography" at <strong>the</strong> University of Colorado<br />

in Boulder, spoke at <strong>the</strong> Instituto Suor Orsala in Naples and <strong>the</strong> Fondazione San<br />

Carlo in Modena, served as commentator to Professor Amartya Sen's Trilling<br />

Lecture at Columbia University, participated in <strong>the</strong> conference on "<strong>The</strong> Cultural<br />

Significance of Place" at <strong>the</strong> School of American Research in Santa Fe, served<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Selection Committee of <strong>the</strong> Cornell Society <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Humanities, and<br />

presented a Faculty Lecture at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>. Professor Geertz's recent published<br />
