Purpose of the Assessment
2013-14 Middle Years Math Assessment
Grades 4 – 8
Fall 2013 Teacher Information
The purpose of an assessment is to gain further information about students’ abilities. With these
assessments, teachers have the opportunity to identify strengths and needs in students’
mathematical learning. Teachers can use this knowledge to work towards targeted goals.
The assessments are in line with Manitoba Education’s “Appropriate Educational Programming”. With
the information garnered from the assessments, teachers can better plan for their students’
individual needs.
Direction for 2013-14 School Year
The topics used for the 2013-14 year will be Math Facts, Geometry, Operations and Fractions.
Using the Assessment for Report Cards
The assessment has been created with the goals of Manitoba Education in mind. We encourage
teachers to use the data collected in the assessment as a part of evidence of learning. This can be
done with all three areas of assessment for learning on the Manitoba Report Card:
• Knowledge and Understanding
• Mental Math and Estimation
• Problem Solving

Vocabulary will be assessed using the 3-point approach, as found in “Success for All Learners”
(Manitoba Education).
Subitizing To look at dot patterns and
automatically know the quantity
(like dice patterns)
Changes to Manitoba Math Curriculum
As there are revisions to the Manitoba Framework of Outcomes, we have updated the Operations
assessment to reflect some of the changes.
Please see your Area Math Consultant if you have any questions.
Non-Routine Problem Solving
With the Geometry, Operations and Fractions assessments, students will have the opportunity to
explore Non-Routine Problems. Students should be able to show their work, answer in a sentence
and name the strategy used.
During the 2013-14 school year, we will be assessing many problem solving strategies. The order of
strategies will be:
Geometry Assessment
• guess & check
• logical reasoning
Operations Assessment
• make a table
• work backwards
Fractions Assessment
• draw a picture
• look for a pattern
To help students choose an appropriate strategy, there are posters created by the Middle Years
Math Assessment Team located at the FSD website:
http://www.frontiersd.mb.ca/programs/SitePages/MathMY.aspx
*A thank you goes to Sharon Funk from Gillam School for sharing her idea
PRIME Background and Strategies is also a great resource for the different strategies needed
for problem solving. A portion of this resource is available on the FSD Middle Years Math
Assessment page.
Another resource is the Problem Solving Experiences books by R. Charles. Please contact your Area
Math Consultant if you cannot find a copy of this resource.
Online resources can also be used to support classroom teachers. Search for “Non-Routine
Problems” and “Non-Routine Problem Solving” for more resources.
Resources Recommended
The following is a list of resources that can be used by teachers to prepare for the assessments.
This list is not exhaustive, but a great starting point for teachers. Schools should have the
following resources available for teachers to use to teach mathematical concepts. Contact your area
math consultant for more information.
