Leveling of Students
Instructors must level and rank their students according to the following scale:
Levels 1 - 4: each of these levels are divided into Low, Mid, and High skill level.
Level 5: no further skill breakdown is required for this level.
Use the Registration Form located at the back of this package.
The following list of tunes in each level is meant to advise students and teachers of
the sort of aptitude, experience, and playing skills that is required for a pleasant
and profitable experience in the classes to which these students will be assigned.
1
It is not necessary to know all of the tunes in any given level to qualify for the next
level. The teacher responsible for sending students should compare the abilities of
their students, including familiarity with different keys and positions, etc. and
compare these skills to the type of tunes represented within the various levels.
If, for example, a student knows 5 of the 7 songs in Level 1, the student should
register as Level 1 High. If the student knows other songs not on this list but at a
comparable difficulty, then that student should also register as Level 1 High.
If a student knows some songs from Level 2 and some from Level 3, the student
should register as Level 2 High or Level 3 Low, based on the various
aforementioned factors.
Students who know very few songs from the Level 5 list but can play much of the
Level 4 songs (or comparable songs) should be registered in Level 5.
This list is representative and should not be considered an exhaustive list of the
tunes to be played. At this event some tunes from these lists will be covered and
some new tunes will be introduced by the instructors.
Songs in bold will be performed at the Friday night concert.
Chaperone Policy
The following list is meant to give chaperones an idea of what their role entails:
1. At the Jamboree, you will be responsible for the students from your school, while
at the same time keeping a watchful eye on the behaviour of all students.
2. Your job is to:
Supervise students
Make sure all students are participating in the classes in which they are
registered and not loitering in the hallway.
Encourage students to get to their classes on time.
Ensure students do not wear hats or eat sunflower seeds.
See that no junk food is brought into the school.
Sit in classes.
3. Your help may be required with the monitoring of the classes themselves.
4. Supervisors are expected to be at the Jamboree the entire time.
5. STUDENTS MUST BE SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES. Parents are entrusting
supervisors with their children’s safety and this is a responsibility that cannot
be taken lightly.
It is strongly recommended that at least one (1) teacher chaperone attend the
Jamboree with other chaperones being teachers, parents, or educational assistants.
The ratio for supervision should be one (1) responsible adult for every seven (7)
students with both a male and female chaperone. If the students are young, the ratio
should be one (1) adult for every five (5) students.
7
Code of Behaviour
Recommended conduct for participants (participants comprise all attendees
including bus drivers, supervisors/chaperones, students, instructors, etc.):
1. Students and staff must remember they are representing their school and that
they must conduct themselves accordingly.
2. Drinking alcoholic beverages and/or using illegal drugs, etc., are strictly
prohibited while engaged in Jamboree activities, regardless of age. All
chaperones and event organizers are required to notify the Jamboree
Coordinator and/or the school administration of any observed consumption of
alcohol, use of illegal substances, or any breaches regarding the Code of Conduct
by students and/or chaperones.
3. The Division prohibits smoking for all students and staff on Division property.
4. A good night’s sleep is important for all participants. A Jamboree curfew of 11:00
p.m. is to be observed by all students. The curfew rule will apply unless the
supervisor has set an earlier time.
5. The Division expects good behaviour and respect from students, chaperones,
and teachers.
6. Participation, learning, and having fun is a priority for everyone.
7. Students are to conduct themselves using all the character education (respect,
love, sharing, humility, courage, truth, and wisdom) they have learned over the
past few years.
8. Breaches of the Code of Behaviour are to be dealt with on site by school staff
and Jamboree organizers. Any breaches of the code may result in the student
being sent home.
