ISSUE 67 Spring 2013
Dear All
This spring newsletter follows closely on the heels of the Christmas issue. Indoor rallies of all sorts have been
taking place most weekends at Linkwood – they have proved to be great winter training for those just getting
going as well as competitive members.
Within this newsletter is the booking form for our spring rallies at Ickworth. At the beginning of this year we
are trying out a new format to our rally days since we are considering having less all day rallies but offering half
day instead. They will be split morning/afternoon & junior/senior and therefore we would be really interested
to have feedback from you with any suggestions or comments.
Also new this year we plan to contact everybody before each individual event asking for specific help rather
than the Help Form that covered the whole season when plans and family commitments through until
September were hard to pinpoint. These events are run for you and provide funds to purchase all the
equipment we are lucky enough to own and use at rallies so please do put yourselves forward when requests
for help are sent out. Don’t forget every single pony club rally/camp/training/competition is organised and
run by volunteers just like you so please do come forward willingly.
Also included in this issue are: a Camp Booking Form, Team Form, and Team Training Dates please do get all
forms sent in as soon as possible to give the relevant organisers as much time as possible to make
arrangements.
I’m looking forward to the dry warm weather with just enough overnight rain to ensure the going doesn’t get
too hard – I know it must be just around the corner now!
Dear Members,
SHPC ICKWORTH RALLIES 2013.
I hope you are looking forward to returning to Ickworth Park for the Easter Holidays, we are all so
lucky to have such a beautiful park with excellent facilities.
As you will see by the rally form, we are going to try a new format in the Easter holidays and see how
it suits you or not.
We very much would like to know your thoughts and feedback would be much appreciated, once you
have tried the new format, before we put together the rest of the summer rallies.
The summer half term is the full day format, so that will give you a reminder what that entails and
also for new members to try out.
To help the rallies run smoothly and get the season off to a good start, could you all members/parents.
1. Check that your tack is in good order. Check the stitching, especially stirrup leather, girth
straps, buckles, etc. It is very unfair to the rest of the ride, if they are delayed, because the
tack is not fit for purpose. Now is a good time to have your saddle checked and possibly the
horses back & teeth looked at and that the ponies feet and shoes are in good order, so you are
up and ready to go for the new season.
2. If you have grown and have got new Jodhpur boots or long boots, make sure that you have
checked that your stirrups are wide enough. 1 cm (½ “) each side of the riders foot, at the
widest part of the boot. Ideally safety stirrups (peacock) for the younger members.
3. It is always advisable that if you have had a fall onto your head with your hat, that it should
be checked and it may need replacing.
4. Can you all make sure that you are at your marker 15 minutes before the ride time ie. If the
time is 10am start, you should be at the marker board at 9.45. This will then mean that the
instructor can have checked your tack and your turnout and you can have more time for
instruction and fun.
5. When you arrive, each rider needs to book in on foot with your hat to Lillian Flack so it can
be checked and then you will be advised which coloured marker to go to.
6. Lillian will have ties, badges, passes, etc. if you need them and I will try and get some sweat
shirts there as well.
7. Remember you need to wear your medical armband and a back protector is compulsory for
cross country.
8. Parents need to keep back at a safe distance (unless lead rein). The instructor should tell you
where to stand for your safety. Please do not teach your children from the side lines. If you
are concerned or want to make a comment, please can you speak to the Chief Instructor (Abi
McClure) or myself and we will do are best to rectify any problems.
9. Booking in and payment. Closing date for Easter & Summer Half Term is Thursday, 21 st
March 2013. Payment can be made in full or post dated cheques for each rally is acceptable,
to accompany rally form. Although, it would be easier for me, if you could commit to
booking in for all by Thursday, 21 st March, it has been agreed that there will be a second
closing date for the Summer Half Term Rally, which will be Tuesday, 14 th May 2013.
10. Air Vests – Could you please note that if you wish to wear an Air Vest, it is compulsory to
wear a permitted back protector underneath!
We have been advised by Head Office, that we do not recommend the wearing of an air vest
in a group situation, especially indoor rallies, as the result of the air vest going off with a
bang, is likely to cause multiple accidents. It is felt that if used for x/c and the rider is at a
distance further away from the group, then this is deemed to be acceptable.

11. The SHPC website has more information on turnout and rallies for you to read.
May I wish you all a very Happy, Healthy & Fun Filled New Season for 2013.
Amanda Braham (Rally organiser)
c/o sub committee Alison Barber, Abi McClure, Clare Pettit & Emma Green.
Important information for all -please read me!
SHPC Rallies Bookings and Cancellations.
When booking in for rallies, both winter and summer, you are making a declaration to the rally
organiser that you wish to be included in the rally and from these bookings the organiser then secures
the venue and/or Instructors for the appropriate number of sessions.
The rallies are organised on behalf of our members and are budgeted at as low a cost per member as is
possible for the rallies to financially break even.
It is our branch policy to be as accommodating as possible to late bookings and if there are spaces in a
group at the appropriate level you may be able to join the rally or go on a wait list for that rally if it is
fully booked.
However we need to establish a recognised cancellation/refund policy because once the venue and
Instructors are booked, we are then committed to cover the level of expenditure they require,
therefore:
A full refund will be given for withdrawals before the closing date for booking in to that rally.
Once the rally rides have been organised and the venue and/or Instructors booked, refunds will
only be given if there is a wait list and your place is filled by another member or in
extraordinary circumstances, at the discretion of the Rally Organiser and the Branch DC.
Any queries relating to the above by email to the Rallies Subcommittee c/o
clare.pettitt@btconnect.com
Thank you.

Over the winter a few intrepid members embarked on an achievement badge adventure.
There were 2 sessions in the new clubroom and much fun was had learning about Feeding and Horse
Tests
As we embark upon another busy year of Pony Club activities please put some thought into which
pony club tests you would like to take this year - all info can be found at www.pcuk.org
We can offer class room based preparation sessions for D+ and C before the summer rallies. Riding
training and testing will take place on rally days (and camp for the E and D tests).
If there are any members looking towards the C+ or B tests please contact me as soon as possible and
I will organise practical training sessions and testing at an appropriate time.
Newmarket and Thurlow Branch, let me know if you are interested.
Please contact me if you would like to take a test this year or are interested in any of the above, or if
DRESSAGE TEAMS
It’s that time of year again when we start thinking of teams. Would you like to be considered for one
of our Dressage teams?
If you are competing at Prelim or above then let me know. Our Novice Area team starts at that level
so don’t be afraid to put yourself forward.
A list of practice dates are on the booking form and you can come along and be seen by our team
trainers who this year will be Clare Pettitt and Caroline Smith
The sessions are held at the lovely Hessett Hall, Beyton and Mrs Barham is very supportive of
Suffolk Hunt using her lovely grass arenas for our Dressage practices.
If you are interested please let me know asap and book into one or more sessions.
These sessions are on a one to one basis for half hour and get booked up fast. If the dates are difficult
for you then please let me know asap as we may add more dates as time moves on.
The Area 8 Dressage qualifiers are at Blackwater Farm, Gt Witchingham on Sat 3 rd Aug and if you
commit to a team you must be available for Championships (see dates on team form)
In the last few years SHPC have done very well and have had teams and individual qualifying for the
Champs.
As well as the Area 8 we have been invited by the Thetford Chase PC to a Dressage Test Training
Day at Overa Farm on Mon 1 st April. This is a great opportunity to practice the areas tests with a
judge and trainer giving feedback.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS AS WE HAVE BEEN
OFFERED LIMITED AVAILABILITY. Good chance to practice Area tests in a competition
environment.
Look out on Horsedates for other Dressage competitions in the local area, these are great for getting
experience.
Keep a record of your competitions on our COMPETITION RECORD SHEET which can be
downloaded from the SHPC website
Please fill in the booking form and send your money asap to reserve your session. No booking will be
secured without payment being received.
48hrs notice required if cancelling or no refund.
Or email janecrawford_257@fsmail.net

EVENTING TEAMS 2013
The Eventing season is just about to get under way. Let’s hope the weather does not play a big part as
it did last year.
Would you like to be considered for one of our Eventing teams? There are Team competitions starting
at 75cm so if you are confidently competing at this height or above please let me know.
As the Area 8 qualifier is to be held at Little Downham Ely on Sat 20 th July we will be holding some
XC schooling sessions for ALL members there .(not just team)
Please see dates on booking form included in this newsletter.
The Team Manager and Trainers would like to see actual Competition results so please keep a record
Horse and Pony Care & Quiz 2013
Unfortunately this year has seen a poor turnout for both teams and has therefore led to us being unable
to enter a team for the Quiz, which compared to the two teams we had last year is disappointing, but I
do hope that more of you will support this next year.
On a slightly brighter note the SHPC are hosting this year’s Horse and Pony Care Area qualifier on
13 th April, however there is a serious lack in senior (14yrs and over) members coming forward and so
as it stands the host branch is unable to enter a senior team which is a huge shame. This competition
is a great way to learn and demonstrate your knowledge and skills in a wide range of areas whilst
working in a team of three, so there is no need to worry – you are not on your own I would
therefore urge any members, both junior and senior, to contact me ASAP if at all interested as it
would be a great follow up to the success of last year if we can at least have teams in the qualifier.
Contact me, Kelly Walton, on 07709 463020 or kelly.walton53@yahoo.com if you have any
questions, queries or you are interested in taking part, I look forward to hearing from lots of you…
and please remember it can be fun!
Easter Egg Hunt
Thursday 4 th April 2013
At Ickworth Park, Horringer
1.30pm start
£2.50 per child
Donations of small foil covered Easter eggs would be much appreciated
and will be collected at the start of the rally
Please come and take part to help SHPC members, raise funds for
Horse and Pony Care teams, have some fun and most importantly
find lots of chocolate!

GOSLING CUP
I have taken over as Gosling Cup Team Manager and would love to hear from anyone who is keen to
take part in the Gosling Cup this August. There have been a few rules changes this year (still to be
confirmed at time of printing).
The Gosling Cup is a competition for a team of four and there is also an individual section. The team
event consists of Tack and Turnout; Individual Dressage; Team Ride altogether; SJ and XC. All four
scores count throughout the competition which has been running since 1945.
This year the course will be 85 cms and is open to riders who are 16 years and under on the day of the
competition, with one senior rider allowed in a team, on ponies not exceeding 15.2hh. Combinations
who are competing at Intermediate Eventing at Area level are no longer allowed to compete in the
Gosling Cup.
We will need to get together to practice the Team Ride and to see how the ponies get along with each
other - some ponies dont like the Team Ride!! Please let me know if you would like to be considered
for this competition. It is unique with it's own scoring system, which makes it quite special. There is
no need to rush out and buy new equipment or clothing for the turnout - you just need to be really
clean, and there will be lots of help available.
Many thanks, Anne May may13@tinyworld.co.uk
Hunting Report - Children’s Meet
The Children’s Meet was held at Street Farm, Long Melford courtesy of Lady Hyde Parker. Monica
very kindly provided nibbles at the meet and it was nice to see so many members out. Sadly due to
the very soggy conditions we were rather curtailed as to where we could go, but Lineage Wood
contained plenty of foxes and provided some action, hopefully some fun was had by all!
CAMP INFORMATION 2013
Overa Farm Camp 2013
Monday 29 July – Wednesday 31 July 2013
Last year at short notice Overa Farm proved an excellent venue for a camp aimed at our middle age
ranges 11 – 16 yrs. This year Chris Cooper has very kindly agreed to allow us to use the venue again.
We have full use of 3 arenas, a BSJA SJ course and XC Jumps.
This camp is fully residential and the children are encouraged to be independent and look after their
own ponies, under the supervision of Instructors. There are three camp Mums, who provide all
refreshments and meals. Three Instructors stay to supervise evening activities and oversee sleeping
arrangements.
There are 22 stables available for our use and these are provided with straw and hay included in the
price of the camp, as with previous year a polo shirt will also be provided. The cost of the camp will
be £180.00 for the three days.
We really hope that everyone has a fun and educational camp, if you have any questions, please don’t
hesitate to contact one of us.
The Organisers: Abi McClure, (abimcclure@yahoo.co.uk), Sha Starr, (sha@thestarrs.me.uk)
Pond Farm Camp – Sunday 28 th to Wednesday 31 st July 2013
To be held at Pond Farm, Upthorpe Road, Stanton. IP31 2AP
This is a 4 day non-residential camp for children 12 years of age and under. Cost £100.
We are sorry that we have had to change the dates this year due to fitting in with school holidays
and Area Competition dates.
It is organised by Alison Barber BHSII SM and Sandra Shaw. We are planning to have 3 or 4 groups -
lead rein/just-off lead rein and groups of more able riders.
All riding is in an all-weather arena or small enclosed fields. There is a show jumping course and also
a small cross country course with fences ranging from 1ft logs to 3ft with some adjustable fences, a
ditch and two banks. On the last day there will be a family BBQ and each group will have one hack on
bridleways.
The emphasis is on having fun, building confidence and having a go, it will include flatwork, show
jumping & XC, games (mounted and un-mounted), stable management and achievement badges.
For those interested in taking PC tests, we hope to fit in E & D tests and prepare the more
experienced riders for D+ and C tests.
Some stabling is available and also grazing in small electric strips, we did find room for lots of ponies
last year but please book early. Contact Sandra Shaw directly if you wish your pony to stay.
