Rabbi’s Message
Three Hundred Million and One
The population of the United States hit 300,000,000 on October 17 at 7:46 a.m.
There were cheers in the Census Department office when the computer indicated
the exact moment of the arrival of number 300 million. Of course, since this was
based on statistical calculation, nobody knew exactly who that person was. In
Queens, New York, the baby born closest to that minute was the child of
immigrant parents from Mexico. In Atlanta, it was the son of a soldier and his
wife. Of course, it is possible that the 300 millionth American walked onto U.S. soil by illegally crossing
the border or by stepping off a plane. And, then, less than a minute later, there was number 300,000,001.
Coincidentally, all of this occurred during the week we were beginning our annual cycle of Torah
readings with Breyshit—Genesis. For us, it all begins with one person—Adam, the first human being.
Talmud and Midrash ask “why?” Why did God begin with one, when God could just as easily have
created the world with 300,000,000 (or more)? The classical answer comes from the Mishnah:
Therefore only a single human being was created—to teach that whoever
destroys a single soul Scripture regards as if he destroyed the entire world, and
whoever saves a single soul Scripture regards as if he preserved the entire
world. And (a single human being was created) for sake of peace among people,
so that one person not say to his fellow “My father was greater than your
father.” And to tell the greatness of the Holy One, blessed be He, for man mints
many coins with a single mold, and they are all similar to one another. But the
King of kings, the Holy one, blessed be He, stamped every person with the mold
of the first human being, and not one is similar to another. Therefore, each and
every person must say “For my sake was the world created.” (Sanhedrin 4:5)
Surely, this country and the world would be a much better place, if all people came to appreciate the
significance and worth of each individual. American number 300 Million is very important indeed—just
like the rest of us.
This month brings something new for Temple
Talk: a series of messages to the congregation
from the synagogue vice presidents. What a great
idea! While all TBS officers share a commitment
to synagogue life in general, and to the future of
TBS in particular, each of us brings our unique
perspectives and priorities to service on the
executive committee. So, as the designated
“messenger” for November, a month when we
give thanks for the abundance in our lives, I’d like
to share with you just a few of the things which I
believe we have in abundance here at TBS:
At TBS, we have an abundance of ways
for our members to become involved in
the synagogue community, no matter
what their interests, abilities or
availability. Our large and diverse
congregation allows us to provide a vast
Vice President’s Message
(Continued on page 17)
array of religious, educational and social
programs. From Talmud study to
computer classes, fashion shows to book
clubs, TBS has a wealth of opportunities
for all ages.
Come to our Preschool, or any of the
many synagogue services and programs
that are designed for young families and
you will see that we have a wonderful
abundance of families with young
children and babies. In my position as a
vice president, I have the privilege of
working with the dedicated volunteers
and outstanding professional staff who
are responsible for providing a
welcoming and exciting place for families
Senior Chaverim
On Tuesday, November 21,
2006 at 12:15 pm, Senior
Chaverim will celebrate its Tenth
Anniversary with a luncheon and
special program that will
remember our past and lead right
up to the present.
Gloria Shaw Kingan was one
of our first presidents who helped
to shape and guide our Senior
Chaverim to the successful group
we are today. After her term in
office, she stayed on the board,
actively contributing her ideas.
So take a
musical
journey with
Gloria and
help celebrate
her life and
Senior
Chaverim’s first ten years.
On Thursday, December 14,
Hazzan Dardashti will celebrate
Hanukkah with us. So, keep both
dates open and join
us! Hope you and
your loved ones
enjoy a very Happy
Thanksgiving!
President
Over the High Holy Days, I received many kind
words of encouragement from so many of you.
Your support is much appreciated.
Becoming Executive Director at TBS is, in
many ways, a return “home” for me. When I was
TBS President from 1991-1993, I developed an
even greater love for TBS and, as with most pastpresidents,
after they leave office, I felt very
nostalgic in my post-presidency days. So coming
back into contact with the daily activities of the
shul is like coming home.
One of my first priorities is to improve our
Library Corner
Something for Everyone
The best time of the year is at hand!
The Festival of Arts, Books and Culture is taking place from November 4 through November 12.
Expect an extended week of fascinating, informative and entertaining events and lectures that can’t be
found anywhere else. As the Librarian, I am, of course, particularly interested in the books and author
events. This year’s line up is particularly fine and I’d like to let you know that the following books—
whose authors are appearing or will be discussed—are available in the Uhr Library.
“For One More Day” by Mitch Albom
“Polio: An American Story” by David Oshinsky
“Love and Other Impossible Pursuits” by Ayelet Waldman
“Tolstoy Lied: A Love Story” by Rachel Kadish
“Golden Country” by Jennifer Gilmore
“Everyman” by Phillip Roth
“Hidden” by Victoria Lustbader
“Absurdistan” by Gary Shteyngart
“Sweet and Low” by Rich Cohen
“Overcoming Life’s Disappointments” by Rabbi Harold Kushner
And for the younger set:
“Miriam’s Journey: Discovering a New World” One of the Gali Girls Series by
Robin Levinson
As it is November and we will be celebrating our second Thanksgiving (Sukkot was the first), I’d like
to say a word or two of thanks for the wonderful people who volunteer in the Library all year round.
These are the folks who label, stamp and cover all the books in preparation for putting them on the
shelves. They have sewn the seat cushions for our 18 chairs so you are comfortable while you use the
Library. They paint, clean and re-arrange the shelves. And they help staff the desk on Sunday. To Bev
Anderson, Allison Lassin and Tricia Schaffer go my heartfelt thanks. I couldn’t do it without you!
The Library is constantly getting new books and films, so please stop by and find something you’d
like. Increase your enjoyment in Jewish knowledge.
Judy Brookover, Librarian
Gift of Israel (GOI)
The chance to study, first hand, the history and culture of Israel, its land and its people, is something most of us want for
our children when they are old enough to appreciate the experience. To make that possible, we have to plan for the years
ahead. We are pleased and excited to note that our Confirmation students are again going to Israel.
The Gift of Israel Program (GOI) makes this unique opportunity available through a TBS-Jewish Federation matching
funds plan based at Signature Bank (which replaces Bank Leumi) in New York. Here is what you need to know about
this risk-free way to demonstrate your faith in the future of Israel and your commitment to a first-rate Jewish education
for your children.
GOI helps families save necessary funds to have an unforgettable Confirmation Class Israel Experience
Each year, TBS and the Federation of Southern NJ will contribute added funds to those set aside annually by individual
GOI families (at least $150 per enrolled child) so that your children will be able to make an educational trip to Israel
Any Religious School child of a TBS member in grades 3 through 6 is eligible to enroll for the GOI program
For each year in which a student is actively enrolled in GOI, Federation will add $100 and TBS will add $50 toward that child’s
Confirmation Class Israel Experience, for a maximum of 7 years and $1,050 in matching funds!
Your child’s educational experience in Israel can be affordable!
New Applicants: For more information and registration forms, call Jerry Ackerman at 856-751-6663. To qualify
for this year’s matching funds, all forms and contributions for the year 2006 must be in
by December 15, 2006.
Current Registrants: You must make your annual payment by December 15, 2006. Mail to Signature Bank, 565
Fifth Avenue, NY, NY 10017, Attention: Gift of Israel. Write your student’s Social Security number on the check. If you do not have
a Signature Bank deposit slip, include a note stating the name(s), Social Security number(s) and amounts for whom the GOI
deposit(s) is/are being made. For instructions about how to request GOI disbursements, call Jerry Ackerman at 856-751-6663.
24 “Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25
When you enter the land that God will give you as He promised, observe this ceremony.
26 And when your children ask you, “What does this ceremony mean to you?” You shall say…
(Exodus 12:24-26)
At a conference I attended, Vicky Kelman, director of the Family Education Project of the Bureau of
Jewish Education of San Francisco, claimed that schools cannot “turn kids into Jews.” From a traditional
Jewish perspective, schools were never intended to produce Jews. Homes were. She also explained that
at the time of Exodus, the experience/question/answer cycle took place at home, but at some point
schools and home became partners, and the cognitive and skill-based components of answering the
child’s questions were handled by the school. Vicky concluded her talk by saying that: “if we want the
children who are our students today to grow up to be Jewish adults, we need to work with the families
with whom they are living today.”
Our Religious School follows the model that Vicky preaches. We create many opportunities for
parents to actively participate in the partnership. Here are a few of them:
PARENTS’ HANDBOOK: This year, in line with our “Year of Big Questions”
theme, we added a special page to the Parent Handbook, with questions allowing
parents and students to engage in conversations guided by these questions.
SOS IVRIT: We created a method to help parents who are not Hebrew readers to
help their children read Hebrew. Through the generous support of our Endowment
Fund, we created and printed a book for Hebrew reading practices for parents and
children. Every family with a Mechinah Bet child receives this book to keep at home.
If you do not have one, ask the school office to provide you with a copy.
FAMILY PROGRAMS: Under the direction of Jennifer Stofman, we offer many
educational programs during the school hours for parents to join their children in
learning and teaching.
THE SCRIBE’S NOTES: This year, we added a new bulletin board in the
beginning of the long hallway. Every 2 to 3 weeks, each class posts a report on that
board, detailing what they’ve learned. This allows parents to follow their child’s
learning and gives them the opportunity to have a conversation with their children on
the subjects learned.
OPEN SCHOOL DAY: November 5 is our OPEN SCHOOL DAY, followed by a
week of class visiting opportunities. Parents are informed of their children’s
curriculum and special grade level program and can visit the class sessions.
CARING FACULTY AND STAFF: Our teachers and staff are at your service for
any questions, any additional material you need for home enrichment, and for just
chatting and updating of class activities.
LET’S BE PARTNERS!
See you in school,
Many Jews have been reluctant to register as
organ donors because of the misconception that
Jewish law forbids organ donation. Nevertheless,
the religious mandate to preserve life takes
precedence over all other religious obligations.
In a 1999 article published in the United
Synagogue Review, Rabbi Joseph H. Prouser
writes: “The inestimable value of human life is a
cardinal principle of Jewish law. This principle
includes an obligation for maintenance of our own
health and for self-preservation. This obligation,
known as pikuah nefesh, also includes the duty to
save the life of one's fellow human being, should
he or she be in mortal danger. This is the
significance of the Commandment: ‘You shall not
stand idly by the blood of your neighbor’ (Lev.
19:16). Codifying this mitzvah in his Mishneh
Torah, Maimonides emphasizes how broadly its
obligation devolves: ‘Anyone who is able to save
a life, but fails to do so, violates ‘You shall not
stand idly by the blood of your neighbor.’”
These sources provide the halakhic basis for
the decision by the Rabbinical Assembly's
Committee on Jewish Law and Standards that "the
preservation of human life is obligatory, not
optional.”
While Leora and I were in the hospital, we
were blessed with the opportunity to fulfill the
mitzvah of pikuah nefesh through organ donation.
The Gift of Life Donors Program was able to
As the leaves changed into a new season of
color, the Preschool engaged in activities for
Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Many exciting
events and programs were held during our first
two months of school:
Our Threes went to Springdale Farms to
go on a hayride, pick pumpkins and ride
through the fields where the fall crops
were being harvested.
Our Fours and Kindergarten went on a
field trip to Johnson’s Farm. They loved
being greeted by Farmer Sid, who
greeted them with “Shanah Tova” and
showed our children the fruits and
vegetables that were being harvested.
By the way, the children proudly
harvest vital organs to be donated. Both Leora and
I felt a measure of comfort knowing that another
child will live because of our son.
I hope that you’ll consider completing a
donation card, and indicate your preference on
your driver’s license. Organ donor cards are
available at TBS. Please discuss this with your
family.
The act of saving the life of another by
donating organs is an act of faith. In A Guide to
Jewish Religious Practice, Rabbi Isaac Klein
writes: “There is no greater kavod hamet (honor
to the deceased) than to bring healing to the
living.”
We honor the memory of our son by bringing
healing to others.
Rabbi Joel Levenson
Leora and I wish to express our
heartfelt gratitude and
appreciation for your letters,
cards, emails and
generous contributions in
memory of our son.
wore their TBS T-shirts on their field trips.
Thank you to the HSA for coordinating this.
The children looked wonderful and felt very
special!
During Sukkot, each class not only visited the
synagogue’s Sukkah,
but also had a turn
having a portable
Sukkah in their
classroom that they
played in and
decorated. We were
able to purchase this
wonderful addition
to our school from our gift shop.
Rabbi Lindemann invited the Fours and
Kindergarten to the main sanctuary to see a
Torah in preparation for Simchat Torah. They
were fascinated by its dress, as well as the
Hebrew script. They enjoyed sharing with the
Rabbi all the things they already know about
Simchat Torah and asked many questions.
Our Twos are settling in and loving Preschool!
They are adjusting to their class schedule as
well as enjoying library with Morah Judy,
Music with Morah Marsha and look forward to
their Shabbat program in the Bet Midrash.
The HSA offered a hot lunch pizza day. It was
a huge success and HSA will coordinate two
hot lunch days a month.
Thank you, parents, for your overwhelming
support at “Back to School Night.” The
teachers did a wonderful job having the
children bake delicious treats and set up a
creative and enjoyable art display. The next
day, the children were very excited to find out
their parents visited their teachers and
classroom.
with small children. Every day at TBS,
we are working to enrich and enhance
Jewish family life.
As a member of the TBS Board of
Directors and Executive Committee, I
can tell you that TBS has an abundance
of intelligent and talented lay leaders
who are determined to help our
synagogue maintain its position of
excellence in the Jewish community. I
am extremely grateful to the many,
many people who give their time and
attention so selflessly, by chairing and
serving on TBS committees and
membership groups.
Of course, TBS is fortunate to have many of
the material, tangible things that make our
synagogue a pleasing and comfortable place to
worship, study and celebrate: a beautiful
sanctuary, a fully stocked library, a modern
computer center and the like. But what makes us
truly rich is our abundance of wonderful people:
congregants who care deeply about Judaism,
about each other, about the community, about
Israel and about the world. Whenever there is a
need, our congregants respond.
I am grateful for the opportunities and
experiences that I have had here at TBS, and
encourage all of our members to take advantage
of our abundance by attending programs, taking
a class, joining Sisterhood or Men’s Club, or
coming to services! You’ll be thankful you did.
Now that the High Holidays are past, and now that we
are in the month of Cheshvan, which has absolutely no
Jewish holiday, let us take a moment to reflect on that
idea. The Ritual Committee hears many complaints each
year as to how the High Holidays don’t feel “right.”
There are so many of us gathered together in one space
that those who sit in the back feel alienated from the
activities on the Bimah. While it is certainly true that
our shul is full during parts of the High Holiday
services, are those truly the most important days in the
Jewish calendar?
The answer, of course, is no, they are not. Shabbat is
the most important day in our calendar and it happens to
occur each week! We know it’s importance for several
reasons:
1) The number of aliyot to the Torah is greatest on
Shabbat, with seven on each Shabbat, six on Yom
Kippur, five on Rosh Hashanah, Pesach, Shavuot and
Sukkot, four on Chol Hamoed Pesach and Sukkot and
Rosh Chodesh; and three on Monday, Thursday, Purim,
Yom Ha Atzmaut, Tisha B’Av, Hanukkah and other
minor holidays.
2) Shabbat takes priority over other holidays (for
example, we don’t blow the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah if
it is Shabbat, we don’t use the lulav and etrog if Sukkot
falls on Shabbat. We don’t say certain prayers such as
Aveinu Malkenu on Yom Kippur if that falls on
Shabbat. Nor can Yom Kippur fall on Friday or Sunday,
since the preparation for breaking of the fast or the
preparation for the fast would violate Shabbat.)
3) In Judaism, the days of the week are numbered
leading up to Shabbat each week, with only Shabbat
having a name.
I would like to personally thank all of those who
helped with High Holiday ushering. Without you,
those important days at TBS would not run so
smoothly. We very much appreciate your time and
effort.
The BBQ in the Sukkah in conjunction with Senior
Chaverim, Sisterhood and the Religious School, was a
big success. A fun time was had by all.
Now with all the holidays behind us, there are
numerous events to look forward to in the coming
months. Please try to join us for some very fun and
educational events.
On November 19 at 9:00 am, the TBS Men’s Club,
in conjunction with the Federation of Jewish Men’s
Clubs, is proud to present Rabbi Tzvi Berger, a
Ritual Practices
Shabbat
Men’s Club
While I am not trying to belittle the importance of
the High Holidays (after all, they are a very significant
part of our calendar) I believe Shabbat should take its
rightful place in our lives.
Whether we stress the Friday night dinner
experience by insisting that all members of the family
join together and not be running off like the rest of the
week, or we perform the rituals of lighting candles,
making Kiddush and HaMotzi to mark the Shabbat as
different from the rest of the week; or attend services
for the spiritual stimulation that is offered. The
observance of Shabbat has much to offer for all of our
senses. There are literally tastes of Shabbat (special
foods associated with Shabbat, such as challah, kugel,
cholent, etc.), sounds of Shabbat (the prayers, the
Zemirot, which are songs sung around the table),
sights of Shabbat (candles flickering, the Havdalah
candle at the end of Shabbat), smells of Shabbat (the
aroma of good food, the spices of Havdalah), and the
tactile aspects of Shabbat (the touching of the Torah
scrolls as they are paraded around the room, the
hugging and kissing of family and friends sharing a
meal on Shabbat or being together in shul).
Let us resolve, in this post-High Holiday period, to
experience some or many aspects of the Shabbat. The
chance to step back from the hectic lives we lead
during the week will invigorate us; the fellowship will
give us a sense of belonging to the community, and
studying Torah will stimulate us.
“Blue Lou and the Bully Fish,”
a musical based on the original story and play
“The Rainbow Sea,” written and composed by
Andrea Feigenbaum. The show came to life on September 17
at the 45th Street Theatre in New York,
with Max, Melanie and Sara as part of
THE LITTLEFISH CHOIR.
They’ll be performing on November 5 at the JCC
Congratulations also to Joani Whinston, Executive Producer and Debbie
and We Need Your Help!
The TBS Home & School Association is having a
“Gently-Used Book, CD, Movie and DVD Sale”
Please contact Mara Rosenthal at 874-4080.
“For everything, there is a season and a time for every
purpose under heaven.” (ECC. 3:11)
This is the title of the colorful artwork by Jackie Olenick, a Judaic artist who
creates illuminations based on Torah text, psalms and prayers.
The piece, currently located in the sanctuary lobby, illustrates the four
seasons in the constant flux within one panoramic landscape. Through this
painting, we are reminded by Kohellet of one of the greatest truths of all
time—nothing stays the same.
Temple Beth Sholom would like to make this beautiful piece a part of our
permanent art collection. We are counting on you to help us raise $2,500 to
make this possible.
Be it large or small, please send your contribution to the TBS office. Become
a part of something meaningful for generations to come.
Please send your donation to:
Rabbi’s Message
(Continued from page 2)
But November is here, so there seems to be
even more significance in the recent census
announcement. On November 9, we will mark
Kristallnacht, the commemoration of the Nazi
attack upon synagogues in 1938, which
foreshadowed the Holocaust to come. How many
Jews would have been saved if they could have
become part of the population of this country?
There were about 14,000,000 Jews in the world
before WWII. Today, we have barely returned to
that number. Five million of us are part of the
300,000,000.
At the end of this month, we will celebrate
Thanksgiving. As we sit around our tables in this
great country, let’s reflect upon what it means that
our immigrant ancestors came here and that we
are fortunate enough to be part of the 300,000,000
citizens of the United States. Let’s also consider
the values of the Mishnah and the implications for
the way we relate to all human beings—whether
they are citizens of this country or not.
An American is born every 7 seconds and a
new immigrant comes to this country every 31
seconds. In the time it has taken you to read this
article, the population has grown even more
beyond the 300,000,000 registered on October 17.
But it’s not the number that matters, according to
our tradition—it is the infinite worth of each one.
Something to think about on Thanksgiving!
