VOLUME XXVIII . ISSUE NO. 4 . January 2008 . TEVET/SHEVAT 5768
This month we mark a secular holiday and a
Jewish holiday consecutively. On January 21,
America commemorates the life of Martin Luther
King, Jr. and his quest for justice. That evening, as
MLK Day comes to a close, we begin the Jewish
holiday of Tu B'Shevat, a day to consider our
relationship with the environment. Though at first
glance this calendrical coincidence might seem
irrelevant, deeper consideration provides an
interesting connection between these two holidays.
Dr. King rooted his leadership during the Civil
Rights Movement of the 1960s in the biblical
prophets’ call for justice. In his now famous letter
from the city jail in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr.
King defended the ongoing protest marches against
segregation by quoting the prophet Amos: “Let
justice roll down like waters and righteousness like
an ever-flowing stream” (5:24). Joining Dr. King in
his call for equal rights and justice were many
young Jews and some rabbis, including Abraham
Joshua Heschel, who was then a professor at the
Rabbi’s Message
Bridging Our Religious Commitment with Social Justice
Kol Ha'Kavod to
Rabbi Steven Lindemann
Rabbi Lindemann received a Doctor of
Divinity degree from the Jewish
Theological Seminary on December 13,
2007 in New York.
He was one of only 48 members of the
Rabbinical Assembly from around the
world receiving the award for "serving
the Conservative Movement and the
Jewish people with distinction."
Rabbi Lindemann was also chosen as the
sole representative of those receiving
the degrees to make remarks at the
Convocation.
Jewish Theological Seminary. The combination
of Dr. King’s references to the Hebrew prophets
and the activity of inspiring figures such as Rabbi
Heschel, challenged Jewish leaders to bridge the
divide between religious commitment and social
justice.
Working to bridge this divide has been a long
process, but today there are many organizations
and programs that offer a variety of Jewish
responses to Dr. King’s call for justice. One such
group is Jewish Funds for Justice,
www.jewishjustice.org. This group helps people
in the United States achieve social and economic
security. They do so by using a holistic approach
to social change, including grantmaking and
loans, service learning, leadership development,
organizing, education and advocacy.
Another project that seeks to bridge the divide
between religious commitment and social justice
comes out of our own movement. In a joint effort,
Rabbi’s Message (cont. from page 1) help of the Cummings grant,
the United Synagogue for
Conservative Judaism and the
Rabbinical Assembly are
spearheading an effort to
require a Hekhsher Tzedek, or
an ethical kashrut certification,
on kosher food. This
certification would reflect a
commitment not only to the
laws of kashrut, but also to just
business practices by kosher
food companies. To earn the
Hekhsher Tzedek, an employer
would have to pay wages
consistent with regional rates,
provide employees with health
care and vacation benefits, and
offer safety training to workers
in a language they understand,
among other requirements. The
Hekhsher Tzedek would
supplement rather than replace
existing kashrut certifications.
The project was recently
awarded a $50,000 one-year
planning grant from the Nathan
Cummings Foundation to roll
out their new program. With the
I recently had the pleasure of attending the
biennial United Synagogue of Conservative
Judaism Convention in Orlando, Florida. I didn’t
know what to expect as this would be my first
convention that was not related to the brokerage
industry, but the event was a memorable one.
I came away with a new sense of respect for the
future of the conservative movement, as well as a
dose of enthusiasm for my role as TBS president.
We were treated to a speech by JTS Chancellor
Dr. Arnold Eisen, as well as a keynote
presentation by Dr. Ron Wolfson titled
“Envisioning the Synagogue of the 21st Century.”
The convention also featured a very funny
comedian we hope to one day have at TBS, as well
as a Cantors’ concert with seven of the top Cantors
from pulpits across the country.
In addition to the various panels, TBS received a
Hekhsher Tzedek certifications
should have appeared on kosher
foods as soon as Thanksgiving of
2008. A blog devoted to Hekhsher
Tzedek, administered by Rabbi
Morris Allen, the project director
of Hekhsher Tzedek and spiritual
leader of Beth Jacob Congregation
in Minnesota, is accessible at http://
radbbimorrisallen2.blogspot.com/.
Finally, Dr. King’s legacy in the
Jewish community is evident in
the current debate on climate
change as well. One Jewish
organization that strives for this is
the Coalition on the Environment
and Jewish Life, www.coejl.org.
COEJL works to expand the
contemporary understanding of
such Jewish values as Tikkun
Olam (repairing the world) and
Tzedek (justice) to include the
protection of both people and other
species from environmental
degradation. They do this by
representing 29 national Jewish
organizations on environmental
issues in Washington, D.C. and
around the country.
President’s Message
January 2008 TEVET/SHEVAT 5768 Page 2
This is where Tu B’Shevat
comes in. Tu B’Shevat is
spoken about in the Talmud as
a day when offerings of food
were brought to the Temple to
celebrate agricultural growth. It
also was a time to recycle that
growth by leaving portions of
one’s harvest for the poor. It is
a day in our tradition that
asserts justice for the
environment and for the people
with whom we share the world.
The three programs
mentioned above are all terrific
examples of contemporary Jews
working in different ways to
fulfill both the message of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., and the
meaning of Tu B’Shevat. The
succession of these two
holidays this year amplifies
their common challenge: to
bridge our religious
commitment with our sense of
social justice.
How do you meet this
challenge?
Rabbi Micah Peltz
Solomon Schecter Award for a program designed
by Marsha Axler. Yasher Koach.
You might think the highlight of the convention
for me was when my name was drawn for a raffle
in which I won free roundtrip airline tickets to
Eretz Yisrael assuring a trip to Israel for me
sometime in the next two years (before the
certificate expires), but I think I was most moved
emotionally when everyone joined hands and sang
at the end of the convention. Those of you who
know me would not classify me as an emotional
guy, but the feelings in the room will be something
I will remember for many years to come.
The next biennial convention will be held in
Cherry Hill, and I hope many of our congregants
will have the opportunity to attend. Save the date!
It’s December 6-10, 2009.
HAZAK/Senior Chaverim
Thanks to everyone who
made our November meeting
such a success. We enjoyed an
afternoon of Magic with
Norman Rosen, as well as a
delicious luncheon prepared by
Florence Wallis and her
committee.
In January, we have two
major events. On Tuesday,
January 15, we will view and
discuss a short film brought to
our attention by the TBS
librarian, Judy Brookover. It is
called “In Our Hands.” We
invite your input into the
discussion and hope you relate
to this outstanding movie.
Our guest for our second
event will be Bill Wine of
KYW who will host Movie
Night. This renowned film
critic is sponsored by
Sisterhood, Men’s Club and
HAZAK on Sunday, January
27, at 7:30 pm. We look
forward to seeing you.
We are looking for a pianist
and singers to participate in our
Purim Katan Spiel in February.
Please contact me to volunteer.
Congratulations to our much
beloved Rabbis Lindemann and
From the Executive Director
Convention Reflection
Mark Fendrick and I just returned from the United Synagogue
Biennial Convention. As with my other experiences at such
conventions, I learned (or rather confirmed) two things I thought
before I went: all synagogues have the same types of problems; and
we at TBS do a lot of things very well compared to the population
of synagogues as a whole.
Some funny things happened as well.
Mark and I were seated at dinner with the Hazzanim who were
going to perform later that evening at the Cantors’ Concert which
has become a fixture at these conventions. Seven acclaimed
Hazzanim from around the country put on a concert of some formal
Jewish music combined with a lot of “fun” types of musical skits.
Alisa Pomerantz-Boro from Beth El asked for a vegetarian meal.
There was a delay in bringing it out from the kitchen so that she
received her platter about 30 minutes into the meal, at a point where
the rest of us had pretty much finished. Anyway, she was eventually
presented with a giant platter of steaming hot BEANS! The jokes
around the table were pretty funny but will not be repeated here
because this is a family publication! It was great to see these icons
of the Cantorate exhibit their human sides.
Dr. Ron Wolfson was a major highlight of the convention. He
recently wrote a book called “The Spirituality of Welcoming: How
to Transform Your Congregation into a Sacred Community.” The
book is receiving major attention in the Conservative movement and
I heartily recommend it to all of you. The TBS Board and staff are
The TBS Office Staff asks Your Help
Did you know that in an average week, TBS receives over 50 calls from congregants
asking us to look up the phone numbers of other congregants? We know that it’s easier to
just call us, but it can also be very disruptive to the many other things going on in the office
at any particular time.
Did you know that there’s a no-cost alternative? Just call 1-800-FREE-411
(1-800-373-3411) and you’ll be connected to a no-cost directory assistance service.
Please give this a try, and thank you for your cooperation!

From the Educational Director
“How good it is to see you again.” The song
continues…
For Rona Kornfeld who has been to Israel before:
“Celebrating Shabbat in Tsfat and Jerusalem
and...seeing Israel through Dina and Tamar’s eyes
and experiences truly made it a trip I will never
forget.”
For Lori Miller, who has been to Israel three
times before, this trip was of a different nature: “It
was amazing...Dina and Tamar kept us busy! Busy!
Busy! We visited schools, met with students and
teachers...ate endless amounts of Schwarma and
falafel, (and) laughed, sang, and also cried…”
Jeanne Conn: “I gained so much more
knowledge...My increased understanding of Israel’s
amazing history and people…”
For Lois Urkowitz who was visiting Israel for the
first time: “There is so much I can tell about the
trip...I cannot explain how peaceful it felt to sit on
our balcony in Jerusalem where, if I turned my
head one way, I could see the old city…”
Lee Wanicur, also a first-timer: “My trip was
We had a great pajama party
at TBS in November. Our 2nd
and 3rd graders watched
movies and heard a “good
popcorn. What fun we had!
In December, Shorashim had
Our next event is at Color
we’ll paint, chat and have a
Tamar Barkan-Shamir wrote: “Sitting with Dina
This was an opportunity to share and experience
my homeland in a way I never have as a native
Israeli. It is an honor to go into the classrooms and
act as an “ambassador,” sharing photos and
In a recent conversation with a congregant, he
observed that his daughter, who is preparing for her
Bat Mitzvah, probably knows much of the Shabbat
morning service simply because she attends
regularly. As I observed in last month’s article, I
learned the High Holiday Shacharit service simply
by coming to shul early in the morning each year
and listening to Maurice Shaw daven.
This led me to think about how true it is that
one of the best ways to learn about Jewish practices
is by repetition. We daven three times a day, we
have Shabbat services each week, we say HaMotzi
and Birkat HaMazon after each meal, we bless our
children each Friday night, etc. All these repetitive
actions help reinforce the customs and traditions of
our individual families and our religious heritage.
When children are routinely exposed to these
things, they begin to internalize them and hopefully
will continue these observances themselves and
pass them on to the next generation.
Our ancestors said Na’aseh v’nishma – we will
do and then we will listen – when receiving the Ten
Commandments. Mitzvot are best understood and
appreciated through experience.
If we want our children to continue our
traditions, we must constantly expose them to the
rituals and have them observe us living a Jewish
Teaching Our Children
life. Whether it is involvement in the synagogue,
giving to worthwhile causes or doing good deeds,
if our children see us making these things
important in our lives, they, too, may absorb these
concepts into their lives. Then it becomes second
nature to continue along this path.
Most of our holidays involve home rituals.
Think of the Pesach Seder, building a Sukkah,
lighting Hanukkah candles, lighting candles and
reciting Kiddush before our Shabbat dinners, so
our children are exposed to the smells, sights and
sounds of our traditions in the comfort of their
homes. They should be encouraged to ask
questions (the Seder requires this!) and, hopefully,
we can supply them with meaningful answers. If
we want Jewish customs and traditions to
continue, we must perform them, have our
children observe us, and participate themselves
and then learn the reasons behind and the
meanings of these traditions. Jewish education is
a life-long endeavor, starting with our preschool,
elementary, BeST Hebrew High programs at TBS,
then attending our community Midrasha, then
taking Judaic courses in college and, finally,
Adult Enrichment courses throughout our adult
lives. Practice produces continuity.
has the potential to earn big dividends while you are out
having fun!
When looking for that special gift, order SCRIP cards from the
retailers on our SCRIP list. Order forms are available online at
www.tbsonline.org or at the synagogue
office.
This program takes very little effort but can
result in big returns, so give it a try! For info
Glass at 424-3689.

Executive Director (continued from page 3)
engaged in reading the book and are beginning to
develop ways to incorporate some of the ideas in
it into our daily interactions with our congregants,
visitors and among ourselves.
One of the issues that seems to affect larger
synagogues more than smaller ones is that
congregants have two misconceptions about the
contributions they can/should make to a
synagogue’s success: the synagogue is so big that
there are plenty of people to volunteer to do X so
I don’t have to and, the corollary: the synagogue
is so big that the paid staff can do whatever needs
doing whenever it’s needed.
My response is that both misconceptions are illconceived.
The problem with misconception
number one is that it is used as an excuse for a
person to avoid doing anything personally and,
therefore, little gets done by volunteers because
too many people feel this way. The second
misconception vastly overestimates the available
“free” time of paid staff to do the work that
congregational volunteers have historically done.
We’ll be discussing volunteerism with you
more and more as the Board of Directors moves
forward in considering the Long Range Planning
Committee’s recommendations. In the meantime,
in addition to our TBS tagline of “Discover the
Treasurers of Jewish Living,” consider a new call
to action—”Discover the Pleasures of
Volunteering at TBS.”
Please let us Know
One of the most challenging tasks we face
in the TBS Office is keeping track of members
who are ill, have lost a loved one, or who
otherwise might benefit from a phone call or
visit from one of our rabbis. We can only alert
them if you alert us.
If you’re aware of any
such situations, please
call Ruth Brodnick in the
office at 856-751-6663,
and give her the
information. She will
make sure it gets to our
rabbis’ attention.
Our Confirmation Class is having their
memorable experience in Israel as you read this. I
am sure they will have great stories to tell upon
their return. Thank you to their trip leaders, Rabbi
Levenson, Rabbi Peltz, Jennifer Stofman, and
Cantor Jen Cohen.
Our final Chai Celebration is being held this
month, and we will honor Rabbi Albert Lewis for
60 years of service to our congregation, and Rabbi
us. My how time flies!
Best wishes for a happy, healthy new year to you
It’s a question I am often asked; and the answer
is not quite as straightforward as you might
imagine.
Acquisitions to the library’s collection are
made on an ongoing basis and not only reflect the
needs of our congregation, but the business of
both the publishing and film industries. I buy
items for adults and children in three different
media—books, audio books and film.
They are purchased from a broad array of
sources. Acquisition actually takes up a lot of my
time! But I do love the challenge. I’ve always
loved “shopping,” but it’s really much more than that.
The TBS Young Members Group held the
second class in its series “Stay One Jewish Step
Ahead of Your Child.”
Led by Rabbis Levenson and Peltz, the onehour
classes are designed to keep parents in touch
with what their children are learning about the
holidays in school. This session focused on
Hanukkah—providing parents with a “refresher”
on why we celebrate the holiday, and engaging
them in a lively discussion of how to address
consumerism and other December holidays with
their children.
The rabbis then led participants in creating
bottles of incense oil for use on their holiday
tables. We all rolled up our sleeves and got to
work, walking away from the session with a nice
keepsake.
The next class in the series will be held on
January 16 on the topic of Tu B’Shevat.
We also celebrated Hanukkah with a pizza
How do you improve on something great?
Very carefully.
We have taken something wonderful and are
making it even better. On February 3, we will
gather together with our world-wide brotherhood
to put on our Tefillin in a true world-wide bond.
We are literally extending the walls of our
synagogue to embrace others in our mitzvah. Our
clubs have always supported their synagogues
with Hebrew School involvement and the
experience we have seen over the years, where
members put on Tefillin for the first time.
Planning is now complete, so we hope to see
you for the Big Wrap on February 3.
Congratulations to Marc Cohen, 2007 FJMC
Carlebach-style Kabbalat Shabbat Service Schedule
Shlomo Carlebach was a Jewish religious
teacher, composer and singer who was known as
“The Singing Rabbi” during his lifetime.
Although his roots lay in traditional Orthodox
Yeshivot, he branched out to create his own
movement combining Hasidic-style warmth and
personal interaction, public concerts and songfilled
synagogue services.
Carlebach is considered by many to be the
foremost Jewish religious songwriter in the
second half of the 20th Century. In a career that
spanned over 30 years, he recorded more than 25
albums that continue to have wide popularity and
appeal. His influence also continues to this day in
so-called “Carlebach minyanim” located in many
cities around the globe.
If you haven’t yet experienced the joy and
excitement that accompany this wonderful Friday
evening service, then you’re missing a special treat.
We start with “A Taste of Shabbat” at 5:45 pm.
This is a small buffet of vegetables, pita, hummus,
fruit, etc. to keep your tummies full until after the
service, which begins at 6:15 pm and lasts until
around 7:30 pm.
Plan to attend and bring your family. Once you’ve
experienced this, you’ll want to come back for more.
These services will be held on:
• January 11, 2008
• February 29, 2008
• April 11, 2008
• May 23, 2008
