TBS Opens Exploratorium
October 10 was an exciting day at the TBS
Preschool as Lindsay and Brent Cohen cut the ribbon
to officially open the new Zalman Beigel Garden
State Discovery Museum Exploratorium. Created in
memory of their and Jordyn Cohen’s Sabba, Zalman
Beigel, the Exploratorium will now be a permanent
part of the curriculum of the TBS Preschool and
Kindergarten, with live
animals, plants,
electronic circuitry and
a floor to ceiling chalk
board for young
scientists to develop
their experiments. Mr.
Beigel adored children
and science, so the
Exploratorium was
created to be a living
memory to him.

On Yom Kippur we considered a riddle posed by
Rabbi Harold Kushner: In November, we get to do
something we have always wanted to do, perhaps
even prayed to be able to do, and most of us will
sleep right through it. Remember the answer? On
November 4, we will turn the clocks back and get
to live one hour of our lives over again. And yes,
most of us will sleep right through it.
November 4th is also the anniversary of the
assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. What would we
give to turn the clock back for that one hour? Can’t
do it. But his death would be even more tragic if the
assassin succeeded in killing Rabin’s vision of
peace, and that vision of the future can only come
about if we continue to believe in it and support
Israel. You all know how to do that: AIPAC, Israel
Bonds, Visit.
The meaning of the past is indeed determined by
the future. A lot happened in the month of
November.
November 2nd marks the 90th anniversary of the
Balfour Declaration. In his book, Jewish Literacy,
Joseph Telushkin says that the issuing of the
Balfour Declaration “may well have been in its time

congregation, thank you for everything. The extra
effort and time put in by everyone from the
executive director to the maintenance staff is

the happiest event in Jewish life since the
beginning of the Common Era.” It was approved
by the British Cabinet and then written in the
form of a letter to Lord Rothschild, president of
the British Zionist Federation: “His Majesty’s
Government view with favor the establishment in
Palestine of a national home for the Jewish
people and will use their best endeavors to
facilitate the achievement of this object…” The
Balfour Declaration galvanized Jewish support
for the British War effort against Turkey and the
creation of the British Mandate over Palestine.
Later, in 1939, the British tried to turn the clock
back with the White Paper: “His Majesty’s
Government now declare unequivocally that it is
not part of their policy that Palestine should
become a Jewish state…” But, in this case, the
League of Nations and the Jewish people would
not allow the future to change the past. The
British were forced to make good on the Balfour
Declaration.
The future made the promise of the past come
true. November 29th marks the 60th anniversary

where all of our officers were

accomplished Rabbi Micah
Peltz gave us an understanding
of what it was like to grow up
as a committed Jew in the
Midwest. Not easy. Luckily for
us, he grew up with lots of
experience at Camp Ramah
where he met his wife, Rachel.
Rabbi Peltz was forthright and
charming.
Since Rachel attended
Columbia University, Rabbi
Peltz was asked how he felt
about the present situation at
the university. Rabbi Peltz
answered that he knew the
president of Columbia when he
had him as a professor at the
University of Michigan. He
respected him as a teacher of
law whose main sphere of
interest was the First
Amendment, that of Freedom
of Speech. Without siding with
him, Rabbi Peltz made us
understand that Freedom of
Speech was Bollinger’s main
criteria for permitting
Ahmadinejad to address the
student body.

action projects at TBS as well as other locations

the committee. New ideas are always welcome.

for children who want to
read books in English.
Edith Kalech, who
initiated this project,
receives heartfelt thanks
from the Jerusalem library when they receive the
boxes of books sent each year.
Donations to Ancora Psychiatric Hospital
Clothing, household items, recreational
materials including games, videos, books, arts &
craft supplies and greeting cards are all needed.
Some items are used by the patients, others are
sold in the thrift shop. Please keep the hospital in
mind as you clean your closets for the fall season.

This phrase: “The soul is yours and
the body is your doing” chanted so
beautifully by Cantor Jen Cohen and
our choir during the Slihot service, still
echoes in my head. It has a beautiful
tune and it also has a great meaning
when it comes to Jewish education.
Judaism in general, and rituals especially, put
great emphasis on the connection between the
physical and spiritual. Reaching a spiritual level is
proceeded often by a physical act. Putting on a tallit
or washing our hands, among other things,
increases the spiritual level of the prayer or the
blessing respectfully.
Similarly, as we plan for the education of our
next Jewish generation, we want to make sure it
will be able to reach its “spiritual” level. We would
like our students, as they grow up, to reach a level
where they will be able to understand the mission
as well as the vision that is required of members of
the Jewish people. A lot of planning, therefore,
goes into the setting of the “physical” aspect of that
process.
New teachers have joined our staff. We welcome
Debbie Ravitz, Hertzel Jacoby and Lori Miller in
the Elementary School, and Mark Cohen, Matt
Kanoff, Michael Kelberg and Michael Dickerman
in the High School. Rabbi Micah Peltz and Jen
Cohen also are part of our school staff, as well as
Tamar Barkan-Shamir who joins us as a teacher
and as a great assistant to me with the elementary
and preschool duties.
Take a look at the new and continuing facets of
our school:
Israel@60: Celebrating Israel’s important events
have always been part of our program. This year as
the country is marking its 60th birthday, we will be
“physically” visiting Israel. Our teachers and our
Confirmation Class will be traveling to Israel. Our
students back at home will join the experience
through connections and a variety of activities
throughout the year.
Curriculum: Both the High School and
Elementary School’s curricula were revised this
year. Emphasis has been given to Hebrew
immersion as well as including more Hebrew at the
High School level.

Shabbat Services: 98% of our
students fulfilled the Shabbat
attendance requirement last year.
The services led by Harriet Baker,
Claire Spechler and Jane
Lindemann give our students the
“physical” tools for a spiritual ascend. Their
reading practices in class come to life at those
services.
Activities such as music, library, computers,
field trips, Mitzvah projects, assemblies continue
to enhance our program.
The chanting is followed by :
“lkng kg vxuj vxuj”—”Watch over your
action (your doing).”
This, in Jewish education, would correspond to
the partnership we have with our parents. A
partnership in which emphasis is not given to
complaints and protests but rather to a yen for
providing the best Jewish education for our
children. While our Open School Week in the
Elementary School is December 2, 2007, keep in
mind that our doors are always open for your
visits, inquiries and suggestions. Attending our
family programs is an important “physical” proof
for the existence of that partnership.
We once again welcome the new families who
joined our school, as well as the returning
students to our BeST program.

The fall is always the start of school for our
children. Celebrating and learning about the High
Holy Days in the beginning of each school year not
only allows children to internalize life long
traditions, it also establishes a momentum for the
rest of the year.
During Rosh Hashanah, the children dipped
apples in delicious sweet honey. Before Yom
Kippur, they read and sang tunes about “Jonah and
the Whale.” The children ate snacks in the Sukkah
and went to local farms to pick apples and
pumpkins. They made flags for Simchat Torah and
marched through the halls singing, “Torah, Torah,
Torah...Torah, Torah, Torah...Torah Tzeva lanu
Moshe!”
The 3s and 4s went with Rabbis Lindemann,
Levenson and Peltz to the main sanctuary and were
in awe standing on the Bimah as the Rabbi opened
a Torah. These are the traditions in our preschool
during the High Holy Days. These memories will
lay the foundations for our children to be active,
Jewish adults.
We also look forward to new and exciting
beginnings in each new year. The children meet
new teachers, make new friends and participate in
new activities. And here’s more exciting news:
The opening of the Zalman Beigel
Exploratorium took place on October 10, and
what a beautiful morning it was! Now in full
swing, it is providing our preschoolers with a
hands-on science room where they can
inquire, question and investigate as young
scientists.
Our HSA is coordinating the Market Place
Craft Fair, with over 60 vendors displaying
and selling fine giftware, crafts and jewelry.
HEY! With the High Holy Days and Sukkot
behind us, we know that the USY year is officially
in full swing. We were glad to see so many new
faces at our Kick-Off Mini-Golf Event, and as the
seasons turn, we look ahead to even more fun.
Mizrach is once again headed to the Big Apple.
On Thursday, November 8 (NJEA Weekend),
we’ll be seeing “Wicked!” If you haven’t gotten
your USY Membership Form yet, please be sure

Our parent/child programs continue to
grow. We currently have 9 music classes as
well as our newest program, “Little
Discoveries,” a parent/child science
program that is held in the Exploratorium.
For the first time, we have a two year old
enrichment class. Our youngest children are
cooking with Morah Joni and Morah Carol
in a “Kosher Cookies” program.
Soon to be announced: New registration
info for our full-day Kindergarten program.

traditional and the “up and coming” events in the
preschool.

Fall Convention will be hosted by the Seashore
Chapter at Beth Judah in Ventnor, Friday,
November 16 through Sunday, November 18.
Registration is $170 and includes transportation. It
will be a great weekend with old friends and new,
as we spend Shabbat in a wonderful community,

Family Festival made possible by
the TBS Endowment Fund.
We all enjoyed Israel dancing
and DJ Music by Brett Axler, DJ
extraordinaire of Michael Lazar
Entertainment, plus we created
decorations to hang in our “Kefli
Sukkah.” Families participated in
fruit smelling, finding the
Ushpizin, mixing up a “Lulav
Shake,” making a spicy
pomander, searching for the Four
Species in our Scavenger Hunt,
fishing, boating and sports topped
off by a delicious BBQ.

What I never realized, even when I was
president of TBS years ago, was the incredible
amount of work that occurs for a 3-4 month
period to prepare for a few weeks of concentrated
services time. I want to thank the entire Temple
Beth Sholom staff who worked diligently and
tirelessly behind the scenes to try to bring you,

We’ll do better next year and hopefully even
better the year after that. We’ve learned where the
new Membership/Seating Packet instructions and
forms were unclear and we’ll improve them.
We’ve learned that some small number of our
members never read anything we send out and
assume that everything is always the way it was
the year before. Now that we know who they are,
we have to find better ways to reach out to them.
We’ve learned that we need to be clearer about
the rationale behind our High Holy Day parking
policies. (Do any of you think it improves your
chances of getting a spot on the lot if we send out
1,800 parking passes for 150 spots instead of 900
passes? If so, perhaps we could play cards
together sometime.)
Our special thanks go out to all of you who
dealt with the ticket issues, the parking issues, the
guest ticket issues, and so on with a smile,
understanding and kind word. It meant and means
a lot to all of us.

Rabbi’s Message

of the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine. Israel was
officially voted into existence, and this became the happiest event in
Jewish life since the beginning of the Common Era...until Israel’s
own Declaration of Independence less than a year later.
Did you know that Thanksgiving played an important part in
passing the United Nations Partition Plan? The resolution was in
danger of failing, so Pro-Zionist forces stalled the discussion and
vote on Wednesday, November 27th. Thursday, November 28th was
Thanksgiving and the U.N. was closed, allowing time to lobby still
undecided nations. On Friday, November 29th, the resolution passed
33 to 13, with 10 abstentions. You can tell that story at your
Thanksgiving table this year, and talk about how this country, too,
changed the Jewish past.
Ultimately, the meaning of all these events will be determined by
how we live today and tomorrow. The meaning of the past is the
riddle. The answer is in the future.

of our recent B'nei Mitzvah students and several of our Pre-B'nei
Mitzvah students.

forward to hearing more from
them in the future.
In addition, Jeremy
Gubman, Shani Prutchi, Alex
Molder, Marlee Zietz and
Edward Gelernt read from the
Torah. This group has read for
Mrs. Spechler’s youth services
before, and will surely be reading for her services again, as well as
for Mrs. Lindemann’s services in the future.
Another group of youngsters learned the special High Holy
Day trope and read Torah for the various youth services on the
High Holy Days. These students are: Rachel Dragon, Rebecca
Dragon, Gillian Ranes, David Golkow, Melinda Schulner, Rachel
Cohen, Elizabeth Siegel, Miriam Teller and Leat Rosov. Yasher
Koach to all!

There are two new books that
I’d like to recommend this
month: “The Zookeeper’s Wife”
by Diane Ackerman and
“Gentlemen of the Road” by
Michael Chabon. The first is
non-fiction and the second, most
definitely, fiction.
First, Ms. Ackerman’s book.
Every so often, an extraordinary
book comes along and this is
certainly one of them. This
Holocaust book is an exemplary
work of scholarship that tells the
story of Jan Zabinski, the director
of the Warsaw Zoo and his wife,
Antonia. Resourceful and
courageous, the Zabinskis turned
the decimated zoo into a refuge,
and saved the lives of several
hundred Jews. Ackerman takes
us to the Warsaw Ghetto and the
1943 Jewish Uprising, and
describes the Poles’ revolt
against the Nazi occupiers in
1944. The book is moving, funny
and terrifying.

Young Members Group
Parents Staying One Jewish Step Ahead
The YMG kicked off its year of programs with
Session #1 of the series “Stay One Jewish Step
Ahead of Your Child.” Led by Rabbis Levenson
and Peltz, the one-hour classes are designed to
keep parents in touch with what their children are
learning about the holidays in school. Through
interactive discussions and hands-on projects,
parents get a refresher course on Jewish holiday
“basics,” and gain ideas for celebrating the
holidays at home with fun, meaningful activities.
For the first session, our rabbis led discussions
about Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah,
with parents sharing their children’s questions,
and the rabbis responding with creative, kidfriendly
answers. The morning culminated with
Rabbi Peltz demonstrating some fun (and edible!)
holiday crafts. Everyone rolled up their sleeves,
and left with a tasty Sukkah to take home. It was
a great way for some of our younger members to

Baer, to construct an edible Sukkah at the recent "Stay One
Jewish Step Ahead of Your Child" YMG event.

varied. He’s quite intent on not repeating himself in
terms of genre and has the ability to write in many
styles successfully.
His latest novel is called “Gentlemen of the
Road” and has been described as “brimming with
breathless action, raucous humor, cliff-hanging
suspense, and a cast of colorful characters worthy
of Scheherazade’s most tantalizing tales. “This
historical adventure takes place in 10th Century
Khazaria, the fabled kingdom of wild, red-haired
Jews on the western shore of the Caspian Sea.” It is
terrific.

back in Hebrew School, the Library will be open on
Sunday mornings, 10:00 am to 12:00 Noon on days

TBS Men’s Club Wins Two National Awards
The TBS Men’s Club was honored this past
summer at the National Federation of Jewish
Men’s Club Convention in Chicago. We received
a Torch Award for Best Overall Activities for our
programming over the past two years, as well as
the Quality Club Award. FJMC sets the criteria
for this award, and our Men’s Club met that
criteria. There are 21 clubs in the Middle Atlantic
Region, and TBS was one of only two clubs to
receive this national award. Immediate Past
President Marc Cohen , Middle Atlantic Regional
President and Past President Joe Swerdlow and I
attended the ceremony.
