The Presidents’ Leadership 

Institute 

TBS is now accepting applications for a new 

program of Jewish learning and leadership to 

engage the next generation of TBS leaders. 

The Presidents’ Leadership Institute (PLI) is a 

joint venture between TBS and the Jewish 

Outreach Partnership (JOP) in Philadelphia. 

Monthly learning sessions will be run by our 

rabbis and organizational specialists from the 

JOP. The PLI is designed to guide future 

leaders in growing Jewishly while developing 

their leadership skills. Due to the nature of the 

program, a limited number of PLI Fellows will 

be accepted. 

Applications must be received by July 

15. To find out more about this exciting new 

opportunity and to receive an application,

The TBS tagline is “Discover the Treasures of 

Jewish Living.” I’ve liked it from the moment I 

first heard it. That was in April, 2002, when I 

visited TBS for Shabbat. And I have since learned 

that it’s true. Here at TBS, you really can discover 

treasures. 

At TBS, I discovered great teachers. Rabbi 

Lewis z”l and I spoke almost daily, and he gave 

me constant encouragement and always left me 

with a smile and a song. Rabbi Lindemann has 

become a role model, a teacher and a friend. 

I have been privileged to be at TBS for six 

wonderful years. TBS has meant so much to me 

and to my family. It is here at TBS that I learned 

what it means to be a rabbi. It was here that Leora 

and I were married. It was at TBS that we 

mourned the loss of our son. The support, 

encouragement and understanding Leora and I 

received during those difficult times is something 

we will never forget. TBS is and will remain part 

of our extended family, always. 

I’m also deeply gratified that this community 

means so much to so many of you. I’ve been 

privileged to witness so many moments of 

transformation here in your lives—at a baby 

naming, a bar or bat mitzvah, a conversion or 

wedding and even following a death and a 

Six years ago, a young rabbi came to Temple 

Beth Sholom after having recently graduated from 

the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. 

Flash forward to June 2008 and that same rabbi is 

now leaving our shul to become the senior rabbi 

at Congregation B’nai Jacob in Woodbridge, 

Connecticut. 

The last six years have seen Rabbi Joel, as my 

kids call him, grow as a rabbi, husband, father and 

friend to the TBS community. After countless 

Hebrew high classes, Confirmation trips, 

weddings, baby namings, funerals and B’nei 

Mitzvot, we will miss Rabbi Levenson’s calm 

demeanor and sense of humor. The good news is 

that this is a great opportunity for Rabbi Levenson 

to utilize the professional skills he developed at 

TBS, in a synagogue setting where his talents will 

continue to be appreciated.

of deep connection with our tradition, heritage 

and people in their child’s school or in a class or 

lecture, during services or at a concert of fine 

Jewish music, in our work on behalf of Israel, and 

at moments of crisis. 

Haverim, dear friend, you taught me to open 

my eyes and be sensitive to the world. That’s a 

treasure. 

Haverim, you taught me what it means to love 

and care...for a father...and a mother. That’s a 

treasure. 

Haverim, you taught me about life. That’s a 

treasure. 

We are excited to begin the next chapter of our 

life together at B’nai Jacob, a 650-member 

congregation in suburban New Haven. We’ll soon 

enroll Shir in preschool, and then in Ezra 

Academy, a Schechter School hosted at the 

synagogue. 

Through growing, learning, celebrating and 

sharing, our lives remain bound in each others’. 

Thank you for discovering the treasures at TBS. 

Leora, Shir and I thank you for letting us be a part 

of your lives.

My drive down Cropwell Road will not be the 

same without my daughter shouting out “Look! 

There’s Leora walking with Shir!” But we know 

the Levenson mishpocha will visit us from time to 

time, and we can do the same, with Woodbridge 

just a few hours away. 

I am already looking forward to the next TBS 

special event when we will welcome back Rabbi 

Levenson as an example of another former TBS 

rabbi who continues to represent the very best 

attributes the conservative movement needs in its 

clergy. 

Thank you, Rabbi Levenson, for the last six 

years of your life. I join the entire congregation in 

wishing you, Leora and Shir good luck in your 

new home. You will be missed, but will always be

HAZAK/Senior Chaverim 

The end of our 2007-2008 year 

of activities is approaching. 

It’s been a wonderful year all 

in all, despite some sadness. 

We lost Rabbi Lewis z”l and 

were happy to remember him at 

one of our meetings. We 

cooperated with Sisterhood and 

Men’s Club in sponsoring both 

the Movie Night with Bill 

Wine, and the Holocaust 

brunch. We discussed our lives 

as teenagers in relation to Israel 

with some 8th graders from our 

religious school. Sisterhood 

joined us in sponsoring our 

speaker last month on aging 

successfully. We had a very 

successful Modern Seder in 

cooperation with M'kor Shalom 

Seniors, a first. 

But this year is not over yet! 

On Tuesday, June 17, we will 

have a luncheon at 12:15 pm, 

followed by the installation of 

one or two new officers, and 

the music of Bobby Block. 

Those of you who have heard 

him before know that we are in 

for a treat. 

Meanwhile, remember to 

attend the TBS Annual Meeting 

on Sunday evening, June 1 

when Art and Janet Simons 

will be honored for the work 

they have done so well and for

Our newest project, which was held at the Voorhees Pediatric Facility, 

was an important addition to this year’s Mitzvah Day, and both the 

patients and the TBS volunteers enjoyed it very much. 

One final note: to the women who worked so hard sorting all of the 

clothing and assembling the toiletry packages, your efforts were very 

appreciated. The church/homeless shelter that was the recipient of the 

clothing commented that the Jewish community of Cherry Hill is very 

generous to its neighors. Yasher Koach to all of the participants who 

walked, rode, sorted children’s books, served meals, prepared meals, 

made Mother’s Day gifts, collected Kosher food, gave blood, knitted and 

honored the memory of Max Levine at Alex’s Lemonade Stand!

organization skills help make this event better each year.

and passion for this project. About 85 meals are prepared each month and 

on Mitzvah Day, about 130 were cooked. 

Cook for a Friend 

Under this program, monthly meals are 

prepared, packaged and delivered to the Jewish 

elderly. Cooking takes place monthly, usually on 

Thursday evenings, from 6:30 pm until about 8:30 

pm. No need to sign up. Just show up whenever 

you have time. Bring your spouse, children or 

friends. Members of all ages can participate. It’s 

social and fun, in addition to being a most 

meaningful project. 

Just one more chance to participate this 

season: June 19. Then we’ll be back in the fall.

Project JELLY 

This project is ongoing 

throughout the year. Children’s 

books are collected and sent to 

libraries in Jerusalem for children 

who want to read books in 

English. Edith Kalech, who 

initiated this project, receives 

heartfelt thanks from the 

Jerusalem library when they 

receive the boxes of books. 

Donations to Ancora 

Psychiatric Hospital 

Clothing, household items, 

greeting cards and recreational 

materials such as games, videos, 

books and arts and crafts supplies 

are all needed. Some items are 

used by the patients, while others 

are sold in the thrift shop. Please 

keep the hospital in mind as you 

clean your closets this summer.

thank Chai Respes for his work as our advisor for 

the past two years. From “Iron Chef Hanukkah 

Style” to 76ers games, Chai has shared his passion 

for Jewish life with our teens. Thank you, Chai, 

for all of your work! 

We are very happy to announce that Matt 

Kanoff has been appointed our USY Advisor for 

2008-2009. Matt graduated from Cherry Hill East 

and Midrashah Junior College. After high school, 

Matt lived in Israel and participated in the Nativ 

College Leadership Program in Israel and 

enhanced his Jewish learning at the Conservative 

Yeshiva. A former USYer himself, Matt was a 

chapter and regional officer. He also teaches in 

the TBS Religious School and will be on the 

Educational Staff at Camp Ramah in the Poconos 

this summer.

From the Religious School Director

A letter a number and a story, this is how the world was created, this is how a nation 

was formed. 

This is the theme of our “samech”—x— 

display. Our community selected the Hebrew 

letter samech to represent the celebration of Israel 

at 60 because the letter samech in gymatria equals 

60. The Book of Creation, a mystical book that is 

believed to have been written by Abraham opens 

with the statement that the world was created by 

digits, letters and a story. 

We created a samech which will be covered 

with numbers representing important dates in the 

life of the state of Israel, and words in Hebrew 

and English representing names and events in the 

History of Israel. Both the numbers and words 

will tell the story of our nation. Since we are 

people whose tradition forms the foundation for 

our future, we placed a small container next to the 

samech with paper and pencils to allow you to 

add your wishes for Israel and your ideas for ways 

we can be better involved in making sure that 

Israel is forever safe and strong. 

We are approaching the end of our school year, 

the time when we reflect on our accomplishments 

this year. Accomplishments that will pave the way 

for more learning, and more experiences. The 

word—ouhx—siyum—ending, which begins 

with the circular shape of the samech, hints to the 

idea that some endings may also be the 

beginnings of some bigger things. 

The end of our school year was marked with 

great mitzvah projects that helped raise $500 for 

Alyn—a hospital and rehabilitation center for 

children. Many of the injured from the terrorist 

attacks are receiving help at Alyn. We also raised: 

$500 to help a soccer team of Ethiopian emigrants 

to Israel living in Kiryat Bialik, $960 for the 

Muscular Dystophy 

Association, $300 for Juvenile 

Diabetes and $150 for Multiple 

Sclerosis. Our students made 

200 dolls for the children at 

CHOP, baked cookies for The 

Saltzman House and decorated 

bandanas for the Zichron 

Menachem Association, a family center for cancer 

patients and their families. 

Sixty-five students ended this year on the honor 

roll. They attended Shabbat services and 

participated in extra curricular activities. Our 

Dalet students are ending their elementary 

education and will be beginning their Hebrew 

High School program as well as their Bar and Bat 

Mitzvah preparations. 

Our students ended this year reading better 

Hebrew, and beginning this summer vacation, 

they and their parents have the opportunity to 

maintain and improve their Hebrew reading skills 

by visiting www.behrmanhouse.com and 

exploring the family page. 

These are just a few of our accomplishments at 

the end of this school year. Please explore with 

your children more of their accomplishments, and 

together figure out how they can become the 

foundation for future learning. 

The teachers and staff of the school office join 

me in wishing you and your family a great and 

safe summer.

Shorashim 

Shorashim is the TBS youth group for 2nd and 

3rd graders. 

Shorashim had one terrific first year. We had 

movie and ice cream nights, trips to Springdale 

Farms, a mitzvah baking night, a karate and 

cupcakes event, swimming at the JCC, pottery 

painting at Color-Me-Mine and tons of laughs and 

fun. 

I look forward to another exciting and fun year 

beginning in the fall. Please get your child (and 

yourself) involved in our group.

It is hard to believe that the school year is over. 

It truly flew by! Here are some highlights of our 

year: 

• The opening of the Zalman Beigel 

Exploratorium 

• Challah Factory Program: Coordinated by 

Dina Eliezer and Tamar Barkan-Shamir, 

each Friday, every child bakes a mini 

challah to take home for Shabbat. 

• Rabbi Lindemann playing guitar at 

Preschool Shabbat programs 

• Our three rabbis donned hats and 

performed “How the Grinch Stole Shabbat” 

for Dr. Seuss’ birthday! 

• Creation of Noah’s Ark theme in the 

preschool playroom funded through HSA 

• Addition of new after school activities 

including art and soccer 

• Development of new parent/child 

program—”Jolly Jumpers” 

• New two year old enrichment program— 

”Kosher Cookies” 

• New Kindergarten program for next year 

• New security system in place 

• Introduction of the Boker Tov Club: Once 

during the school year, each class enjoys a 

pancake breakfast and story with Morah 

Ellen. 

• Rabbi Peltz conducted a chick naming as 

we said L’Hitraot to the chicks that hatched 

in the Exploratorium. 

And from our classes, highlights of the year as 

told by our teachers and children: 

Kitat Clavim—Morot Jonie, Carol and Jeanne: 

Five activities stand out the most: ice skating on 

blocks, painting outside (“this is really fun!”), 

greeting everybody at the beginning of the day, 

visiting and revisiting the chicks in the 

Exploratorium (“Maybe they are leaving because 

they are visiting their mommies.”). We enjoyed 

the Friday ritual of preparing a child-sized 

challah! 

As for January 2s, they loved: painting with a 

golf ball, playing musical instruments with Morah 

Marcia and celebrating Shabbat. 

Kitat T’Laim—Morot Julie, Yosefa, Debbie 

and Jeanette: 

Our favorite experience this year was getting

Passover with Kitat

Dagim. We created 

many projects such as 

frogs, Pyramids, 

Elijah’s Cup, 

Afikomen bags and

placemats. We pretended to be slaves and worked 

hard building cities for Pharaoh. We used puppets 

to tell the story of Passover and learned many 

songs. The highlight of Passover was our Seder 

and making fried matzah. This was a wonderful 

experience for both the teachers and the children. 

Kitat Doobim—Morot Harriet, Lora and 

Debbie: 

“Our favorite thing this year at preschool was 

playing with our friends. Morah Harriet would put 

toys and games in three different places of our 

classroom and called it group play. We changed 

our group every 10 minutes so that we got to play 

with everyone! We also loved painting, gym and 

the baby chicks!” 

Kitat Barvazim—Morot Brenda, Marsha and 

Lora: 

If you stop by Kitat Barvazim, you will meet 

the Book Bandit. The Book Bandit (a raccoon 

doll) shares the reading experiences in our 

classroom with the children. Twice during the 

school year, he visits each child’s home for the

Kitat Divorim—Morot Maxine and Ellyne: 

Our class had a terrific year and will be greatly 

missed. Our favorite time was many of the 

moments we shared together: intriguing and funny 

class discussions, free play with our friends, 

interacting with our teachers and playing math 

games. Many of the special activities we shared 

were shows by “Jungle John” and “Larry the Hat 

Man,” and of course, we love going to the 

Exploratorium! We truly had an awesome year!

Have you ever looked forward to a visit with a 

friend from your past? Someone you really enjoy 

spending time with? When the visitor finally 

arrives, do you remember how much you wanted 

to extend the short get together? 

Well, we Jews have this type of experience 

each week. We look forward all week to the 

arrival of the Shabbat Queen—counting each day 

as Day One of Shabbat, Day Two of Shabbat, etc. 

We prepare for the arrival of Shabbat, setting the 

table with the “good dishes,” serving lots of 

delicious food and offering a “toast” in the form 

of Kiddush. We try to make good use of 

Shabbat’s gift of time to spend with family and 

friends, coming to shul to daven together, study 

together and raise our voices in joyous song. 

Unfortunately, as with all such visits, the 

allotted time does run out and we must face the 

inevitable “goodbye, until next time.” In the case 

of Shabbat, this occurs late in the afternoon of the

Ritual Practices 

Shabbat Minha 

Shabbat day at the Minha service. The traditional 

melody used for this service is somewhat more 

downbeat than the nusach used for Friday night 

and Shabbat morning. In a way, the leader is 

singing the melody of the pending farewell to 

Shabbat. It has a slower tempo, and has several 

sections that truly accentuate the pausing to 

reflect that Shabbat is almost over. 

It has become the pattern at TBS this year, to 

use the few minutes between the end of the Minha 

service and the beginning of the Ma’ariv service 

to mark the transition from Shabbat to weekday. 

This occurs as the last rays of light are 

disappearing from the sky as the stillness of 

twilight can almost be felt enveloping us. During 

the fall and winter months we sang several songs 

during these moments—a slower melody for 

Yedid Nefesh, a slow tune for Adoshem Oz l’amo 

Yitane, and other tunes that set the mood for the 

departing Shabbat. 

Since Pesach, we have returned to the 

traditional practice of studying the tractate of the 

Mishna known as Pirke Avot—the Ethics of the 

Fathers. This is a six chapter collection of wisdom 

taught by the Rabbis of the Talmudic period. As is 

our typical style of learning on Shabbat morning, 

Rabbi Peltz has taught us with a dialogue, asking 

us questions about the text and having us 

participate in the learning process. As a child and 

teenager growing up at TBS, I fondly recall the 

many summer Shabbat afternoons that I 

accompanied my father to shul and Rabbi Lewis, 

z”l, led us in the study of Pirkei Avot—a favorite 

text of both Rabbi Lewis and my father, alav 

hashalom. 

Following the brief Ma’ariv service, we have 

the beautiful ceremony of separation, Havdalah. 

Thus we combine some davening, singing, 

studying and camaraderie as we end the Shabbat 

and again begin the countdown to the following 

Shabbat. During the summer months, when the 

Minha service begins around 8 PM, this 

experience can be a very soothing and calming 

way to end the Shabbat. Come to TBS with your 

families and friends and experience the farewell 

to Shabbat.

The point is that while most of us look 

forward to the summer as a time to vacation, 

recharge our batteries, get away from the daily 

pressures of the school year and have a 

slowdown in the myriad activities either we or 

our children are involved with, life at TBS 

remains fairly hectic. 

Certainly we take our vacations and the 

number of meetings held each week does 

diminish. But the pace doesn’t slow down too 

much as the checklist of things to be done gets 

larger and larger as we get closer and closer to 

September. 

We know that you, our congregants, are 

entitled to and expect a smooth and enjoyable 

High Holy Day experience, and we all strive to 

provide that. However, if there’s an occasional 

problem or glitch, we’ll do our best to help 

resolve it promptly and courteously. 

What we ask of you is that you return your 

packet of forms with the information clearly 

filled out with the proper deposit by June 16, 

2008. This gives us about 90 days to process 

all the information and mail the tickets, 

parking tags, and other information to you by 

early to mid-September. Your cooperation 

with this schedule will go a long way toward 

ensuring the smooth High Holy Days we all 

want to experience. 

Those of you who would like to discuss your 

synagogue financial obligations with me, are 

encouraged to call the office at 856-751-6663 

and make an appointment. It would be helpful 

if you have completed your High Holy Day 

forms before we meet. 

At this early date, let me be one of the first 

to say, “L’shana Tovah Tekatevu.”

Kitat Kofim—Morot Tracey and Laura: 

Kitat Kofim had a great year in the 

Exploratorium! We loved hatching chicken eggs. 

We watched our tadpoles, cockroaches, frog and 

fish. We also liked marching with our two year 

old friends in the hallway. We had lots of fun and 

parties and we tried new foods. We loved our trips 

to the Art Museum, and Johnson’s Farm. 

Kitat Tziporim—Kindergarten Enrichment— 

Morot Harriet and Chaya: 

Morah Chayah’s morning class loved learning 

Hebrew, singing Hebrew songs and learning the 

weather in Hebrew. 

Morah Harriet’s afternoon class loved learning 

all about the Jewish holidays and what we do on 

the holidays. They love reciting the blessings they 

learned and what religious objects symbolize each 

holiday. They especially enjoyed the different 

foods they prepared for each holiday. 

I would like to thank both families and staff of 

the preschool for making this year one filled with 

growth, special moments and cherished 

memories. We are truly a family and our children 

have thrived and grown. Have a fun and safe 

summer.

Summer is upon us, and life is 

sometimes a bit slower. That means we 

have more time for leisure reading. To that 

end, I asked some of our TBS staff for their 

recommendations for your reading 

pleasure. The results from these three avid 

readers are quite varied and will, hopefully, 

help you find something that suits you. 

Let’s start with Rabbi Lindemann. He 

suggests Geraldine Brooks, “The People of the Book.” 

“Great historical fiction that brings to life th Sarajevo 

Haggadah in new and exciting ways.” Speaking as 

your librarian, any book that has an archivist as its 

protagonist is fine with me. Rabbi Lindemann also 

suggests “B’Midbar” in Torah as the “original Jewish 

travelogue.” 

Rabbi Peltz likes two books in a new series on 

ethics from the Jewish Publication Society. This series 

is called Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices and deals with 

critical moral issues of our time. The first two are 

“Body” and “Money” both by Elliot Dorff. The other 

suggestion from Rabbi Micah is something completely 

different. “Shut Up, I’m Talking: And Other 

Library Corner 

Diplomacy Lessons I Learned in the 

Israeli Government...A Memoir” by 

Gregory Levey. “A smart, hilarious 

insider’s take on Israeli politics.” Levey 

was a speechwriter for the Israeli 

delegation to the UN and later became a 

speechwriter for Prime Minister Ariel 

Sharon. A laugh out loud read. 

Our Executive Director Eric Jacobs is 

a voracious reader who is partial to mysteries among 

other genres. He recommends the author Michael 

Kahn whose protagonist is lawyer Rachel Gold. Kahn 

has written six legal thrillers in this series so you can 

extend your enjoyment for a long time. Eric also likes 

the oldie but goodie, “The Source” by James 

Michener. This book is a good beach read and will 

keep you busy all summer. 

These books are all available at your very own 

congregational library at no cost and provided with a 

smile by me, your personal librarian. Stop in. And 

happy summer reading!
