When the term “December Dilemma” first
appeared in the 1950s, it was usually applied to
the confrontation of Christmas in the public arena.
How do you respond to the pervasive displays in
stores, schools, civic centers? By putting up
Hanukkah Menorahs (Hanukkiot)? Do we treat
Christmas as a secular holiday and embrace it—
take part in the school party or sing the carols
with the choir? Or do we acknowledge its
religious significance and keep a distance? Do we
say “happy holiday” or Merry Christmas” to our
gentile friends? Do we stay home on Christmas
and watch “Miracle on 34th Street” or “It’s a
Wonderful Life” yet again, or do we go out for a
movie and Chinese food (Kosher, of course)? For
some, perhaps, there was a question of a
Hanukkah bush, but for most it was all about
keeping Christmas at bay.
Last month, Debbie Perlman was kind enough
to be the first vice president to author an article in
Temple Talk. First, I thank her for giving me the
month off. Second, I thank her for writing a
wonderful column. It is my hope that next month
another vice president will offer his or her
perspective on TBS.
As I write this, we are preparing to celebrate
Thanksgiving. At this time of year, I am always
struck by the kindness that people display. We see
random acts of kindness documented in the media
on a regular basis in November and December.
For me, this time of year always sparks a
nostalgic feeling. This feeling is even more
pronounced for me this year than in any other, as
my son Shawn and I prepare to head to Israel on a
Masorti Mission with Rabbi Lindemann and other
TBSers. We will be joining a group of 45
Conservative Rabbis and lay leaders and will be
Rabbi’s Message
Three Hundred Million and One
President’s Message
December 2006 KISLEV & TEVET 5767 Page 2
Times have changed. In 2001, Dr. Ron
Wolfson wrote a book called Hanukkah: The
Family Guide to Spiritual Celebration for the
Federation of Jewish Men’s Club “Art of Jewish
Living” series. Fully, one-quarter of the book (50
out of 200 pages) is devoted to “The December
Dilemmas.” Clearly, the coincidence of Hanukkah
and Christmas raises all the old questions, but
now there is a new dimension: “the astronomical
rise of intermarriage and the attendant phenomena
of conversionary and interfaith families.” Given
that one-quarter of first marriages among born-
Jews is to a non-Jew (50% in some parts of the
country), “the indisputable fact is that a majority
of Jewish families have within their extended
systems, members who were not born Jewish and/
or are not now Jewish.” Indeed, times have
changed:
All of a sudden, we are not just confronting Christmas in the shopping mall, we
must respond to an invitation from a non-Jewish relative to celebrate with a part of
our family. All of a sudden, we are not just debating whether to sing Christmas
songs with the school choir; we are asked to accompany a family member to
Midnight Mass. It is one thing to say “no” to a child wanting to sit on Santa’s knee,
but quite another to refuse an invitation from in-laws to celebrate their holiday
(Wolfson, p. 147)
(continued on page 14)
visiting Masorti synagogues and Conservative
Day Schools. I am very proud to report that we
will be delivering a check to the Masorti
Movement for $6,600. These funds were donated
by our congregants during the High Holidays. I
thank you for your kindness. I am sure that these
funds will support many families who are in need.
In addition, our Hebrew School is donating
tzedakah funds to school children who cannot
afford to pay for lunch. Todah Rabah!!
This coming new year represents a milestone
in the history of TBS. I cannot believe that 2007
marks the 18th anniversary of our relocation from
Haddon Heights. To commemorate, we will be
designating 2007 as our Chai Year. This special
anniversary will kick off on February 3 with a
Chai Gala Dinner Dance. I thank Naomi and
Barry Schimmer and Robie and Bob Bloom for
Senior Chaverim
On Tuesday, December 19, at
1:00 pm, we will celebrate
Hanukkah with Hazzan
Dardashti. In honor of the
occasion, I am asking you to
bring something for children in
Israel. Rabbi Levenson is leaving
on December 17 with 17 students
from our Confirmation Class,
and together, they will go to the
Jaffa Institute where
they will distribute
arts & crafts
materials, board
games and other
items to the children.
As some of the items may be
costly, please join with friends
for your purchases. Bring your
unwrapped gifts to the TBS
office no later than December 12,
marked for Senior Chaverim.
Happy Hanukkah to all.
We Did It!
Through your Tzedakah
and desire to share and
give the gift of abundance,
we were able to send
$2,000 to Israel with Rabbi
Lindemann, Steve Ravitz
and a delegation from TBS.
One-thousand dollars was
raised, and then matched
through the generosity of
the Stanley & Doris Ravitz
Acts of Kindness Fund.
Mi-shulchan Le-shulchan
means “from table to
table.” It is an
organization in Israel that
will now be able to provide
thousands of
meals to
hungry Israeli
children.
Thank you
to the
Religious and
Preschools for your most
generous contributions!

Do You Know of a
“Mitzvah Waiting to Happen” That May Need
a little Assistance?
What’s Cooking?
When turning on a television or
walking the streets of a major city, we
are graphically exposed to those in
need. What we don’t see are the
needy who are shut in, or those whose
pride will not allow them to seek aide.
Right here in the Delaware Valley,
there are many senior members of the
Jewish community in need.
For the past eight years, the TBS Social Action
Committee has prepared over 1200 meals annually.
Once a month, a cadre of choppers, meat loaf shapers,
brownie bakers and frying pan managers gathers in
the meat kitchen to prepare hearty meals.
Reservations are not needed. Up to two dozen
chefs participate each month, but we wouldn’t mind
having even more. For some, this is a family night
out, with parents and children working together. For
others, it’s an evening for friends to catch up.
Discussions are shared about the Eagles, the Phillies,
and who makes the best kasha.
From time to time, and with your indulgence, I will
use this space to explain some of TBS’s policies a little
more fully than perhaps they have been in the past.
The term “member in good standing” is defined in the
High Holy Day Financial information booklet you
receive each year: “A Member in Good Standing is one
who is current in all financial obligations to TBS, i.e.,
all prior years’ fees, including dues, tuition, building
fund etc., have been paid in full; and current year
obligations are current in accordance with the
synagogue’s payment schedule.” In addition, a member
who has made and adhered to other than standard
payment schedules and obligations is also considered to
be “in good standing.”
In practical terms, we require that members must be
in good standing to:
1. Be elected as an officer, Board Member or to be
appointed as a committee chairperson
2. Receive High Holy Day tickets
3. Enroll children in preschool, religious school or
BeST programs
4. Receive Bar/Bat Mitzvah date assignments
5. Start Bar/Bat Mitzvah training
Say Little And Do Much
We begin at 6:30 pm and are finished by
8:30 pm. Many of the chefs have already
put in a full day at work or school, and
many are tired, but when they see the 100+
meals ready for their trip to the needy, all
is well in Cherry Hill.
Members of the congregation deliver
meals to the David Neuman Senior Center
in Northeast Philadelphia where they are
distributed as part of the Cook for a Friend
Program.
If you have a few hours and want to have fun while
performing a mitzvah, join us during any of the
sessions listed below. If you are really productive, you
can be an official brownie quality assurance tester.
6. Have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah at TBS
7. Use TBS’s event facilities.
I’d like to thank the large majority of TBS
congregants who pay their bills according to our
payment schedules. I also recognize that, from time to
time, we make mistakes in some bills. I’ve had the
opportunity to talk to some of you whose bills were
either unclear or downright incorrect and I’m pleased
to report that we were able to correct the problems
very quickly to everyone’s satisfaction.
We recognize that special circumstances do occur in
people’s lives which may necessitate relief from some
of the TBS obligations in the form of reductions or
eliminations of some fees or the granting of time
extensions to make good on the amounts due. Each
situation is individually reviewed with strict
confidentiality and I encourage anyone with legitimate
concerns to contact me directly at TBS at 856-751-
6663.
As always, I’m interested in your thoughts. Please
send me an email at ericj@tbsonline.org.
Thanks,
Eric Jacobs

“The Torah is fire; it was given in fire and is compared to fire.
Just as with fire, if one gets too close to it one burns, if one distances himself one is cold.
So man should warm up at the light of the sages.” (Midrash Tanchuma, Yitro)
Hanukkah is the time that we think about light, candles and fire. Hanukkah also is the time when we think
about dedication and education. The word Hanukkah is rooted in the three Hebrew letters: f b j meaning
“educate.” It is with pride and great pleasure that I introduce our dedicated educators, some of whom have
been with us for many years and others who have joined us more recently. All of them, though, are
committed to transmitting the warmth of our sages to our children.
The celebration of Sukkot taught our
children the concept of thanking Hashem
for the food we harvest. “Pilgrims” and
“Native Americans” had a Thanksgiving
“pow-wow,” where each age level
performed a Thanksgiving song.
Kindergarten performed a wonderful play,
and our children and their families came
together for the true meaning of
Thanksgiving with this month’s tzedakah
project. Todah Rabah to all who donated
That’s the title of a book by Michael Eisner,
former CEO of Disney. It’s a memoir of Eisner’s
experience at a Vermont summer camp, and how
the lessons he learned there helped him to become
the person he is today.
Eisner learned the following lesson while on a
canoe trip: “When you go on a trip, everybody has
a role and everybody has to chip in, and you’re
all depending on one another… While the division
of labor could be taught and exemplified
anywhere—in a factory, on a sports team, in a
group project of school—what separates the
tripping experience is the stakes. Eight boys in the
wilderness, each doing his own thing doesn’t
work. Everyone must do their jobs at the campsite
for the sake of the team. If there is a problem, like
loss of supplies or food, the group has to find a
way to solve the dilemma.”
If you are planning to send your child to a
day camp or overnight camp this summer, then I
urge you to consider Camp Ramah in the
Poconos. Not only is Ramah a fun place for our
kids to grow Jewishly, but it also offers the
athletics, the finest visual and performing arts,
and outdoor education programs.
As synagogue members and Hebrew school
parents you have shown your commitment to
Jewish education and the formation of strong
Jewish identities. At Ramah the values and
experiences your child enjoys during the year are
reinforced in an empowering, safe and fun filled
camp setting.
Today, Jewish summer camping is a pillar of
Jewish life in America. Throughout the world,
hundreds of Jewish leaders are borne through the
experience of Jewish camping. In addition, record
numbers of Jewish marriages are the result of
relationships begun at Ramah.
It isn’t words or logic that makes people love
Ramah, and perhaps for that reason, words and
logic don’t come close to expressing what it is
about the camp that is so compelling, so
wonderful, that people like me are still hooked on
the memories, still close to the friends, and still
dedicated to the values and teachings of Jewish
life we lived and learned at Ramah.
When a 15 year old begins to associate fairness
and respect for life with a counselor (or teacher or
A Message from Rabbi Levenson
CAMP
rabbi or basketball coach) whom he already
respects, with davening and keeping kosher and
observing Shabbat, the power of those
associations is such that it lasts a lifetime.
At Ramah, our children’s very conception of
self is altered by the summer Jewish experience.
The shift may be subtle, but it’s real. We learn to
choose our friends a bit differently. We define fun
a little differently. We are a little more sensitive to
others than we used to be, more respectful of
eternal values than we were before. This is the
magic of Ramah. It is a magic that has been
repeated over and over again, tens of thousands of
times over—one child at a time, for decades. It
works. It is a gift every Jewish parent can, and I
believe should, give to every Jewish child.
Leora and I want to help give that gift. In
memory of our son, we have established the
Rachmiel Cohen Levenson Memorial
Endowment for Camp Ramah at Temple Beth
Sholom. Camp Ramah has had a significant
impact on both of our lives. Through this
endowed fund, we are honored to enable young
members of our community to enjoy and benefit
from this meaningful Jewish experience.
In her book, Tears of Sorrow, Tears of Hope,
Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin writes of the power of
giving tzedakah: “Symbolically, tzedakah enables
us to model the kind of unconditional kindness we
now seek from God. Communally, it unites us
with our ancestors who gave tzedakah throughout
the millennia seeking mercy and beneficence for
themselves and their loved ones. Emotionally,
giving tzedakah in a moment of pain and sorrow
connects us to others at a time we seek to retire
and crawl deep inside our own enveloping sorrow.
And practically, tzedakah helps another person in
need.”
Thank you to all who have given tzedakah in
memory of our son. We especially want to
acknowledge Yale and Audrey Asbell whose
generosity ensures that the Rachmiel Cohen
Levenson Memorial Endowment for Camp
Ramah will make a difference for years to come.
As we heal, we rebuild our hopes and dreams
and resolve for a bright and joyful future.
Preschool News (continued from page 8)
Family and Children’s Services and Hadassah, we
participated in a food drive to provide families
with Thanksgiving meals. The response was
overwhelming. Our children sent their heartfelt
wishes and greetings to the families by making
Thanksgiving cards that accompanied the meals.
Many thanks to the HSA for the huge success
of the Market Place Craft Fair. The Marketplace
had over 60 vendors selling beautiful hand made
crafts and gifts. Along with this, the HSA
sponsored a used book and CD sale. Books not
sold will be donated to charity. Special thanks to
Stephanie Hersh, Traci Miller, Karen Cassway,
Michele Ferguson, Sheryl Rosenberg and Mara
Rosenthal for their hard work in coordinating
these events. Proceeds from this and all HSA
fundraisers go towards Preschool scholarships and
The winter months are quickly approaching and
that means things are HEATING UP for USY!
Coming up are International Convention in
Boston, USY Basketball and a Movie Night.
General Board positions are now open and
we’re delighted by the interest we’ve received. If
chairing this special event. In addition, plans are
being made for a year filled with wonderful
events for the entire family.
As I announced during my High Holy Day
remarks, our Long Range Planning Committee
has been meeting and will be reviewing
strategic areas in our synagogue. I thank Art
Simons for spearheading this very important
project. Sub-committees have been formed and
chairs have been appointed. Work is underway
and recommendations will be presented to the
Executive Committee before the end of our
current fiscal year.
On October 29, the Adult Education
Committee hosted Dr. Daniel Pipes, an expert in
Radical Islam and the War on Terror. Over 400
people heard Dr. Pipes paint a realistic picture
of the Radical Islamic Movement. This program
was the first of many scholar-in-residence
programs. For information about upcoming
events, please contact Jennifer Stofman at TBS.
I thank the Endowment Committee for funding
these programs.
In December, many of us start to think about
potential tax issues. As you may know, TBS is a
501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. As such, gifts
made to TBS are completely tax deductible. A
possible method of maximizing a gift would be
to donate appreciated stock to TBS. The recent
increase in the stock market has created some
opportunities now that might not have been
attractive in the past. Eric Jacobs and I would be
happy to meet with you and discuss this type of
donation to TBS.
I thank the Executive Committee, the Board
of Directors and staff for their support this year.
You have stood beside me during some difficult
days and I thank you all!!!
I wish everyone a Happy New Year, a year
filled with love, good health and opportunity.
Wish Lists
Every year at this time, I suggest some books for children on the theory that
a good Jewish book is a perfect Hanukkah gift. This year I have narrowed it
down to two books:
“Hanukkah at Valley Forge” by Stephen Krensky, illustrated by Gregg
Harlin. Published by Dutton Children’s Books. According to an American
Library Association review, this book “offers younger readers fictionalized
portrayal of an event from American history. On a cold December night at
Valley Forge in 1778, General Washington spies a young soldier lighting a
Hanukkah candle. During a brief conversation, the soldier explains the
background of the holiday to Washington and the two note the similarities
between the ancient conflict between the Maccabees and the Greeks and the
War for Independence against England. An afterword clarifies the source of
this story and provides further background about documented events. Harlin’s
evocative paintings are rich with period details that successfully bring the
settings to life.”
This book is appropriate for readers from second through fourth grade. This
picture book for older readers should not be missed.
“I Have a Little Dreidel” by Maxie Baum, illustrated by Julie Paschkis.
Published by Cartwheel Books. This charming large format book gives new
life to a favorite Hanukkah song. There are new verses that tell the story of a
family visit and the music for the song as well as a recipe for latkes. It is the
illustrations done in a folk motif that make the book a real stand out. The kids
will love looking at the pictures and finding the details on every page. For
Preschool to second grade.
I am often asked if I have a wish list for the Uhr Library, and I am
constantly purchasing materials that are appropriate and meet the needs of the
congregation. It is an ongoing process that mirrors the ongoing process of the
publishing industry. Now something special is happening that is extremely
important and the Library needs your help. A new edition of The Encyclopedia
Judaica is about to be published. This work has been named to Library
Journal’s Top 50 Reference Works of
the Millennium. It is certainly the
most important reference work on
Jewish knowledge, history, life and
culture and has been updated for the
first time in 30 years. It is the most
basic and important reference in any
Jewish library. It is my entire wish list
for our Library this year. It is also the
single most expensive purchase that
our Library will make: $1,995.00. The
shipping of the multi-volume set is
free. I am wishing for a donor or
donors to make this purchase possible.
It will benefit the congregation for
many years to come. Please contact
me at the Library, Monday through
Thursday mornings, if you are
interested in assisting in this purchase.
So, the term “December
because there is no single
dilemma to be faced at this
