termed office pack.
As 1993 comes into focus more people feel markets for office grades
will continue to grow in demand. Some, possibly prematurely, are calling
office grades “the grade of the future.” As new and existing mills start
pulling larger loads of office grades from throughout the country, newer
facilities are starting to come on line. The addition of these plants could
intensify markets for these materials.
Pricewise, the widely reported sluggish markets which have been seen
for a number of grades are not being experienced for most deinking
grades. Whether or not legislative mandates require greater amounts of
post-consumer fiber, it appears new and existing facilities will continue to
use larger amounts for their furnish.
Sorted white ledger and sorted colored ledger prices continue to grow
as more tissue mills start using ledger stocks. Other mills are looking to
blend sorted colored ledger in with mixed office grades, which is lowering
the available supply of material.
Coated book stock is another grade enjoying stronger markets. While
supply and demand has remained fairly stable, with a welldesigned
supply/demand cycle, recent trends toward greater post-consumer fiber
has resulted in a noticeable increase in coated book stock. These grades,
while unlikely to continue at the same pace, should move fairly well
throughout this year.
