Sorted Office Paper has been one of the most widely discussed
grades over the past several quarters. With the interest in using material
from office environments there are a number of mills looking to use a
blend of a number of grades. While individual mills have different quality
requirements for the grade, the interest in using this material is driving the
price of the grade, in some cases significantly. Additionally, many dealers
are opting not to sort out the grade to reduce the processing costs.
Telephone Directories have become a more widely collected
commodity. Despite efforts by directory publishing companies, the lack of
a consistent infrastructure is prohibiting greater collection of this material.
A positive step, however, is the work the Paper Stock Institute is doing in
coming up with definitions for the grade. While coming up with a definition
for the grade is only one step in the long process to getting the material
collected on a wider level, it will allow handlers of the material to come up
with a clear-cut definition for the grade.
