CHOOSE MANAGEMENT
WAIKATO MANAGEMENT SCHOOL
QUALIFICATIONS OVERVIEW
SUBJECT
An area of study in which
students can ‘major’. A major,
such as fi nance or tourism, forms
a signifi cant part of the points
required to obtain a qualifi cation.
CERTIFICATES
One semester, or one year,
qualifi cations typically used for
short specialised programmes or
as bridging programmes. Provides
a programme similar to the fi rst
year of a bachelor degree.
GRADUATE DIPLOMAS
Generally a one year full-time
programme. These provide the
equivalent of a major in a subject
other than that in which the
student has majored for their
fi rst degree.
POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMAS
Generally comprise a one
year full-time programme of
graduate papers. They build on
attainment in a prior degree and
demonstrated practical, professional
or scholarly experience.
DIPLOMAS
Awarded at a higher level than
a certifi cate. Diplomas cover a
range of subjects and represent
the second stage of undergraduate
study corresponding to the second
year of a degree programme.
BACHELOR HONOURS DEGREE
Either one-year full-time
postgraduate programmes which
are a qualifi cation in their own
right, or part of a larger programme
that includes the bachelor degree.
POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATES
Available for graduates who wish
to build on an earlier degree.
These programmes can broaden
existing knowledge, provide
industry experience or retrain in
areas of demand.
MASTERS DEGREES
Advanced qualifi cation involving
intensive study and supervised
research. Specialist degrees such as
the Master of Management Studies
(MMS) and generalist degrees
such as the Master of Business
Administration (MBA) are offered.
BACHELOR DEGREES
A structured course in an area
of study such as management
or communication. Each degree
has a different 'make-up' with
a set number of papers at
different levels.
GRADUATE CERTIFICATES
Require the equivalent of one
semester of full time study at
graduate level. These can provide
a bridge for students who
wish to seek admission into a
postgraduate diploma.
DOCTORAL DEGREE
Gives students extensive
knowledge in their chosen fi elds,
trains them to do original and
meaningful research and prepares
them to function as a member of
a teaching faculty.
