Stamp Announcement <strong>12</strong>-13: Purple Martin Stamped Envelope<br />

On <strong>January</strong> 23, 20<strong>12</strong>, in Mulberry, Florida, the <strong>Postal</strong><br />

Service will issue a Purple Martin stamped envelope<br />

(Forever ® priced at 45 cents).<br />

The U.S. <strong>Postal</strong> Service ® celebrates the largest swallow<br />

in North America with issuance of Purple Martin Stamped<br />

Envelope. The highly realistic stamp art includes a large<br />

illustration of a purple martin perching and a smaller illustration<br />

showing the bird in flight. Art director William J.<br />

Gicker designed the stamps, using illustrations by artist<br />

Matthew Frey.<br />

The WAG (water-activated gum) Purple Martin (Forever)<br />

stamped envelopes will be available in the following formats<br />

only through Stamp Fulfillment Services (www.usps.com/<br />

shop or 800-782-6724):<br />

#10 regular envelope (Item 210500).<br />

#10 window envelope (Item 210600).<br />

#9 regular envelope (Item 210700).<br />

#9 window envelope (Item 210800).<br />

The pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) Purple Martin (Forever)<br />

stamped envelopes will be available in the following formats<br />

in the field and through Stamp Fulfillment Services:<br />

#10 regular envelope (Item 231700).<br />

#10 window envelope (Item 231800).<br />

#9 regular envelope (Item 231900).<br />

#9 window envelope (Item 232000).<br />

#6¾ regular envelope (Item 270900).<br />

#6¾ window envelope (Item 271000).<br />

Distribution: First-Class Mail Rate Purple Martin<br />

Stamped Envelopes (Forever priced at 45 cents)<br />

Stamp distribution offices (SDOs) and stamp distribution<br />

centers (SDCs) will receive their standard automatic<br />

distribution quantities of the stamped envelopes. Distributions<br />

are rounded up to the nearest master carton sizes:<br />

Item 231700, #10 regular envelope, 2,500.<br />

Item 231800, #10 window envelope, 2,500.<br />

Item 231900, #9 regular envelope, 2,500.<br />

Item 232000, #9 window envelope, 2,500.<br />

Initial Supply to Post Offices<br />

SDOs/SDCs will not make any automatic distribution to<br />

Post Offices. Post offices requiring quantities of Items<br />

231700, 231800, 231900, 232000, 270900, or 271000 must<br />

requisition them from their designated SDO/SDC using PS<br />

Form 17, Stamp Requisition/Stamp Return. Post Offices<br />

may preorder from SDOs/SDCs through the Stamp Services<br />

System beginning 30 days prior to the first day of<br />

issue. For Post Offices that have placed orders, initial supplies<br />

to the Post Offices will be shipped as stamped envelopes<br />

are received at the SDCs from the stamp printers.<br />

Sales Policy<br />

All Post Offices should maintain a sufficient inventory level<br />

of these items until the stamp is officially withdrawn from sale.<br />

If supplies run low, Post Offices must reorder additional quantities<br />

using their normal ordering procedures.<br />

How to Order the First Day of <strong>Is</strong>sue Postmark<br />

Customers have 60 days to obtain the first day of issue<br />

postmark by mail. They may purchase the new stamped<br />

envelopes at their local Post Office, at The <strong>Postal</strong> Store ®<br />

website www.usps.com/shop, or by calling 800-STAMP-<br />

24. They should address the envelopes (to themselves or<br />

others), and place them in a larger envelope addressed to:<br />

After applying the first day of issue postmark, the <strong>Postal</strong><br />

Service will return the envelopes through mail. There is no<br />

charge for the postmark. All orders must be postmarked by<br />

March 23, 20<strong>12</strong>.<br />

How to Order First Day Covers<br />

Stamp Fulfillment Services also offers first day covers for<br />

new stamp issues and <strong>Postal</strong> Service stationery items postmarked<br />

with the official first day of issue cancellation. Each<br />

item has an individual catalog number and is offered in the<br />

quarterly USA Philatelic Catalog. Customers may request a<br />

free catalog by calling 800-STAMP-24 or writing to:<br />
