Students participate in
Diversity Mentorship Program
On Sept. 13, a group of students participating
in Texas Wesleyan University School of
Law’s Diversity Mentorship Program
attended a networking event at the law
school with attorneys from the American
Airlines legal department.
Pairing students with members of the
local legal community, the program is
open to second- and third-year students.
Coordinated by the office of career
services, the goal of the program is to
provide role models and career advice to
students who consider themselves part of a
minority group.
American Airlines attorney Dick
Malahowski spoke to students about the
importance of utilizing the people and
classes available to them, both during
school and beyond.
“The information you are learning gives
you the foundation,” Malahowski said.
“Pay attention in class, you’ll use it.
And keep learning throughout your time
as an attorney.”
Students and attorneys will meet throughout
the year, with events ranging from in-
house American Airlines presentations to
hearings and negotiations and will include
practical career-focused information to
help students as they prepare to enter the
legal profession.
Two students receive de los
Santos scholarship
Ricardo de los Santos ’94 awarded
scholarships to two Texas Wesleyan
University School of Law students
at the start of the fall semester. The
ceremony was hosted by the Hispanic
Law Students Association.
1L Victoria Branson and 1L Jessica
Cotriss were each awarded the Ricardo de
los Santos scholarship, an annual award
presented to deserving Hispanic students at
Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.
After putting himself through law school
as an older, nontraditional student, de los
Santos eventually opened his own private
practice in Cleburne.
“There is such a great need for Hispanic
attorneys, and I’m honored to be here,”
Judge Terry R. Means of the United States
District Court for the Northern District of
Texas said. “Mr. de los Santos is a wonderful
attorney, and in recognition of his success
and the successes that would follow him, he

started the Pedro de los Santos scholarship,
and eventually the Ricardo de los Santos
scholarship.”
This is the seventh year the scholarship has
been awarded.
Justice Carolyn Wright
addresses class of 2007
Justice Carolyn Wright of the Fifth
District Court of Appeals of Texas was the
commencement speaker at Texas Wesleyan
University School of Law’s spring hooding
ceremony on May 11.
Complimenting the law school’s
commitment to community service, Justice
Wright told the graduates of the expectation
that comes with a Texas Wesleyan
law degree.
“There is a downside to graduating from
Texas Wesleyan law school,” Justice
Wright said. “When you want to be
just ordinary, the outside world will
expect extraordinary.”
The ceremony took place at the Will Rogers
Memorial Auditorium in Fort Worth.
One hundred and seventy-two students
were presented with an academic hood in
recognition of completing the requirements
of a juris doctor degree. z
