FROM OUR NURSES’ OFFICE MANDATED PHYSICALS The Pennsylvania School Health Law requires physical examinations in 9 th grade. The physical examination by the school practitioner will include the examination of skin, eyes, nose, throat, teeth gums, heart, lungs, abdomen, genitalia, neuromuscular system, skeletal system, nutritional and emotional status, blood pressure and pulse. If the school nurse has not received a completed private physical form by March 1, 2010, a school physical will be scheduled for your child. School physicals will be conducted at the West nurse’s office on various dates between March 1, 2010 and the end of the school year. Again, if you gave permission, either on the emergency card, that you prefer the examination by the school practitioner, or on the School Health Services form for schoolconducted physicals, a school physical will be scheduled for your student. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the West nurse’s office at 215-949-6792. Important reminder from the nurses.......... As a result of the new Pennsylvania Department of Health immunization requirements, all students attending Pennsylvania schools in 2010-2011 must have two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or history of the disease. If your child does not have a second dose of varicella vaccine or history of the disease, please have him/her receive this immunization and submit documentation to the school nurse prior to the first day of school in September. The Pink Ribbon Club I’d like to take a moment and give a heartfelt “shout out” to 3 very special young ladies and an EOP (Educational Opportunity Period) that is filled with amazing students. The 3 young ladies are Leilanie Esser, Morgan Ferrante, and Esther Bullard. They came to my classroom back in January and asked if I would please be their adult advisor for an EOP group they wanted to start. I explained that my plate was already full, but I would help find someone if they couldn’t on their own. Before they left, I had asked what their group was about and all 3 passionately explained they wanted to start a club for Breast Cancer Awareness called, “The Pink Ribbon Club.” This club would work together to raise money towards finding a cure for this devastating disease. Additionally, they wanted to make their peers aware of the fact that “every 3 minute’s a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States.” Not only is this a frightening statistic but the amount of males with breast cancer is increasing as well. Needless to say; I am their advisor and the club is up and running. These girls promoted their club by making posters, distributing flyers to students, speaking with their peers during lunches, etc. They wanted their message to be heard and did so with such ferocity for such a young age. We currently have 45 members, males and females, and many others who want to join. This wonderful group of students ranges from 9 th to12 th grade. They come together every other Wednesday and give of themselves to share in their hope for finding a cure for breast cancer. So far, in less than a year, this group has raised over $2500.00. During our 1 st meeting, it was decided that they wanted to create a logo, have it printed on Pink T-shirts, and sell them to students and faculty. Their logo, “WINK FOR PINK,” has been extremely successful. We have sold over 500 scarves, t-shirts and hoodies so far. The club is sponsoring another fundraiser, which involves teachers and administration. Special cans will be set up in all 3 cafeterias from March 8 th thru May 3 rd . People will have a can with their picture on it. The “can” that collects the most money will have their heads shaved during a special EOP in May. During this EOP, 3 female teachers will also have 10” or more cut from their heads for “Locks for Love.” The following adults have graciously volunteered for this wonderful cause: Gentlemen Ladies “Locks for Love” (10 inches) Mr. Lindemann Mr. Wright (his beard) Mrs. Levinson Dr. Patterson Mr. Felt Ms. Sacco Mr. Padilla Mr. Hughes Ms.Titano Dr. O'Meara Mr. Pesci Mr. File Mr. Bergman Mr. Paulson Mr. Stoloski (Greg) Mr. Groden Mr. File This should prove to be a very exciting fundraiser. However, I must say that this special group of students’ success is not measured with the numbers of dollars raised. These girls and boys work together for a reason. They have shared their own personal stories of pain, sadness and hope and determination. Never have I been filled with such pride and admiration for what these young adults have gone through, are dealing with, and/or are willing to do in order for more people to become educated with breast cancer. These students are already connected to one another just for the fact that they “care” not only for their family members, but for all those who are suddenly members of a community, a vast family whose purpose exemplifies the best of what it means to be human. In closing, I look forward to being a part of what this group of young adults has planned for the future and will once again be honored to be their advisor, their mentor, their teacher, their friend.
