MARCH – APRIL 2010
PRINCIPALS’ MESSAGE
We would like to make you aware of some important events at PHS:
Challenge Day was held on March 8 th and March 11 th . In the course of two days, 200 students (100 students
on each day), staff, parents and administrators participated in activities run by Challenge Day facilitators. During each
session all participants shared personal stories leading to a deeper appreciation for each other. The overall goals of the
program are to increase personal power and self-esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to
eliminate the acceptability of ridicule, violence, and social alienation. Students and staff learned a great deal about
themselves and their peers, and take these lessons back and apply them in their daily interactions. The goal
is to plant seeds that will grow and further promote the positive learning environment we all continue to foster at
Pennsbury High School.
Sports Nite will take place on Friday, March 19 th and Saturday, March 20 th . The festivities begin at 7:00 p.m. on both
evenings, which are held at Charles Boehm Middle School. Good Luck to our Orange and Black Teams!
The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) exams will be held for juniors on six (6) days between
Tuesday, April 13 th and Tuesday, April 27 th . The PSSA is a state evaluation system that provides information about the
student, Pennsbury High School, and the Pennsbury School District’s performance on the skills included in the
Pennsylvania Academic Content Standards. Students will be tested in the areas of Mathematics, Reading, Science and
Writing. The demonstration of proficiency in Mathematics and Reading was recently added as a requirement for
graduation. Proficiency on this administration of the PSSA is the best method for students to meet that requirement.
Students should also remember that their PSSA scores will be reported on their transcripts. As an additional incentive,
juniors who have earned all possible credits to date and reach proficiency on the PSSA in both Mathematics and Reading
will be eligible for a reduced course load during their senior year. More information concerning this option will be
forthcoming.
To support student achievement, PSSA study sessions will be held prior to the administration of the PSSA. Students who
are interested in attending a PSSA study session should sign up in the main office at either the East or West Campus.
Information regarding a study session schedule will be announced. You will be receiving a letter in the mail that will
outline the schedule for grades 9-12 for our six (6) testing days.
Additional information on the PSSA may be obtained at www.pde.state.pa.us and through the Pennsbury High School
Website.
We wish our juniors success on these upcoming tests! Remember, “Every Question Counts!”
PHS 2009 – 2010 REGULATIONS
We are asking parents and guardians to review
this information with your student. Students
need to follow these regulations throughout their entire
educational experience at Pennsbury High
classroom each day at 7:20 A.M.
On the second offense, the phone will be held and secured until the end of the
class period.
On the third offense, the phone will be held and secured until the end of the
day.
On subsequent offenses, more severe disciplinary action will be assessed, which could
include a Saturday detention or suspension.
Lateness
A period lateness will be accrued and counted and discipline action will be assessed.
Ninety (90) minutes of unexcused lateness will count for a first cut for the class missed.
Two (2) class cuts will result in a failure for the marking period for that class.
The first lateness to B, C or D period will result in the student being issued a warning by the teacher.
The second lateness to B, C or D period will result in the teacher contacting the parent/guardian or a
GI BILL BENEFIT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
There is a program (Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance) that provides benefits for a
dependent spouse and children of individuals killed in active duty or those veterans who are totally
disabled because of an active duty injury. In addition the new Post 9/11 GI Bill has a provision that
enables current service members the ability to transfer their earned benefits to their dependents.
Normally these benefits are paid for post secondary education programs and various
apprenticeship/on-the-job training programs.
The DEA also known as Chapter 35 of Title 38, U. S. Code, provides education and training
opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. To be eligible, you must be a son, daughter,
or spouse of a:
• Veteran who died or is permanently and total disabled as a result of a service
connected disability. The disability must arise out of active service in the
Armed Forces;
• A veteran who died from any cause while such service-connected disability
was in existence;
• Service member who is missing in action or is captured in line of duty by a
hostile force;
• Service member who is currently being forcibly detained or interned in line of
duty by a foreign government or power;
• Service member who is hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment for a
service connected permanent and total disability, and is likely to be discharged
for that disability;
As a son or daughter, as long as you have entitlement left, you may generally receive benefits under
this program from age 18 to 26 (8 years).
There is an exception that enables an eligible dependent child (who is 18 years of age) to use
benefits while in high school. These benefits can be used for both private and public high school
programs.
If you are an eligible individual (or if you have questions), please contact Christine Hawk at (717-
787-2414 or chhawk@state.pa.us) to discuss what steps are necessary to help you use this earned
benefit.
IMPORTANT STUDENT INFORMATION
Seniors, please remember to access the Pennsbury High School online scholarship Database on
Naviance. http://connection.naviance.com/pennsbury. The Scholarship List provides
information for nominating yourself or applying for various scholarships, which come through the
guidance office. This list is updated regularly as we post scholarships so check back frequently.
Federal law requires all men living in the United States to register within a month of their 18 th
birthday with Selective Service. Registering keeps you eligible for college loans, job training,
government jobs and driver’s license renewal in most states. You can get a selective service
registration card at your local post office or register online at www.sss.gov
PENNSBURY INCLUSION PHILOSOPHY
The Pennsbury School District believes our children belong with their peers. Pennsbury is
committed to promoting a sense of belonging in each child by affording all students their right to be
educated, to the maximum extent appropriate, in their neighborhood school. This commitment is
possible through the use of appropriate support to enable students to be educated in the least
restrictive environment.
FALLS TOWNSHIP RAPID RECOVERY PROGRAM
When an autistic child or an adult with dementia wanders off and gets lost, finding them quickly
sometimes can make a difference between life and death. The Rapid Recovery Program is a tracking
system that consists of a small wrist bracelet worn by someone that is at risk of wandering. It is
designed to locate missing special-needs children as well as Alzheimer and dementia patients. This
bracelet transmits a signal for up to a mile radius, allowing search and rescue efforts to be quicker,
finding the individual in minutes instead of hours.
This program is available to all Falls Township residents and surrounding communities.
This program is a community-based program and has been funded through private donations as well
as grant money. The Township is not currently charging for this service. Hopefully, with continued
support from the community and grants, the Township will be able to continue to offer this program
free of charge.
If you know any student who would benefit from this program or would like additional information
regarding Rapid Recovery, please contact Faith at the Falls Township Police Department 215-949-
9100 x 303.
NEWS OF THE MONTH FROM YOUR HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARIES
Did you know?
Over the past two years, the high school libraries have started to purchase books in print and as ebooks.
An e-book is a book but in an electronic format. We have already begun to see many
benefits to adding e-books into our collection including:
• E-books provide 24/7 school and home access to the collection.
• E-books allow multiple users to read the same book at the same time.
• E-books allow students to easily search for keywords instead of turning pages.
• E-books can be interactive and contain audio capabilities.
• E-books are also available in hard print format, so we do carry both.
• E-books allow users to change font sizes for those who have difficulty reading small print.
Just so you know, to access these e-books from home, students will need to have a password.
Please see either the East or West librarian for this information.
Access to these e-books can be found on the library website at the following link:
www.pennsbury.k12.pa.us/pennsbury/PHS/Quick Links/Library/
This month’s Recommended Book is:
It’s Not About the Bike by Lance Armstrong
The compelling and inspirational true story of Lance Armstrong’s long battle with cancer
and his determination to win the most important bicycle race in the world.
Don’t forget, the best way to get a student to read is for you to read too!
FROM OUR NURSES’ OFFICE
MANDATED PHYSICALS
The Pennsylvania School Health Law requires physical examinations in 9 th grade. The physical
examination by the school practitioner will include the examination of skin, eyes, nose, throat, teeth
gums, heart, lungs, abdomen, genitalia, neuromuscular system, skeletal system, nutritional and
emotional status, blood pressure and pulse. If the school nurse has not received a completed private
physical form by March 1, 2010, a school physical will be scheduled for your child. School
physicals will be conducted at the West nurse’s office on various dates between March 1, 2010 and
the end of the school year. Again, if you gave permission, either on the emergency card, that you
prefer the examination by the school practitioner, or on the School Health Services form for schoolconducted
physicals, a school physical will be scheduled for your student. If you have any questions,
please feel free to call the West nurse’s office at 215-949-6792.
Important reminder from the nurses..........
As a result of the new Pennsylvania Department of Health immunization requirements, all students
attending Pennsylvania schools in 2010-2011 must have two doses of varicella (chickenpox)
vaccine or history of the disease. If your child does not have a second dose of varicella vaccine or
history of the disease, please have him/her receive this immunization and submit documentation to
the school nurse prior to the first day of school in September. Thank you.
The Pink Ribbon Club
I’d like to take a moment and give a heartfelt “shout out” to 3 very special young ladies and an
EOP (Educational Opportunity Period) that is filled with amazing students. The 3 young ladies are
Leilanie Esser, Morgan Ferrante, and Esther Bullard. They came to my classroom back in
January and asked if I would please be their adult advisor for an EOP group they wanted to start. I
explained that my plate was already full, but I would help find someone if they couldn’t on their
own. Before they left, I had asked what their group was about and all 3 passionately explained they
wanted to start a club for Breast Cancer Awareness called, “The Pink Ribbon Club.” This club
would work together to raise money towards finding a cure for this devastating disease.
Additionally, they wanted to make their peers aware of the fact that “every 3 minute’s a woman is
diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States.” Not only is this a frightening statistic but the
amount of males with breast cancer is increasing as well. Needless to say; I am their advisor and
the club is up and running.
These girls promoted their club by making posters, distributing flyers to students, speaking with
their peers during lunches, etc. They wanted their message to be heard and did so with such ferocity
for such a young age. We currently have 45 members, males and females, and many others who
want to join. This wonderful group of students ranges from 9 th to12 th grade. They come together
every other Wednesday and give of themselves to share in their hope for finding a cure for breast
cancer. So far, in less than a year, this group has raised over $2500.00. During our 1 st meeting, it
was decided that they wanted to create a logo, have it printed on Pink T-shirts, and sell them to
students and faculty. Their logo, “WINK FOR PINK,” has been extremely successful. We have
sold over 500 scarves, t-shirts and hoodies so far.
The club is sponsoring another fundraiser, which involves teachers and administration. Special
cans will be set up in all 3 cafeterias from March 8 th thru May 3 rd . People will have a can with their
picture on it. The “can” that collects the most money will have their heads shaved during a special
EOP in May. During this EOP, 3 female teachers will also have 10” or more cut from their heads for
“Locks for Love.” The following adults have graciously volunteered for this wonderful cause:
Gentlemen Ladies “Locks for Love” (10 inches)
Mr. Lindemann Mr. Wright (his beard) Mrs. Levinson
Dr. Patterson Mr. Felt Ms. Sacco
Mr. Padilla Mr. Hughes Ms.Titano
Dr. O'Meara Mr. Pesci
Mr. File Mr. Bergman
Mr. Paulson Mr. Stoloski (Greg)
Mr. Groden Mr. File
This should prove to be a very exciting fundraiser. However, I must say that this special group of
students’ success is not measured with the numbers of dollars raised. These girls and boys work
together for a reason. They have shared their own personal stories of pain, sadness and hope and
determination. Never have I been filled with such pride and admiration for what these young adults
have gone through, are dealing with, and/or are willing to do in order for more people to become
educated with breast cancer. These students are already connected to one another just for the fact
that they “care” not only for their family members, but for all those who are suddenly members of a
community, a vast family whose purpose exemplifies the best of what it means to be human.
In closing, I look forward to being a part of what this group of young adults has planned for the
future and will once again be honored to be their advisor, their mentor, their teacher, their friend. I
salute each and every one of you with a special “WINK FOR PINK”. Big, warm hugs to all….
