In another month, the annual
Kansas State Assessments will be
upon us, once again. Our testing
window will begin the first full
week of March and conclude
around the middle of April.
We will be testing the areas of
mathematics, reading, science, and
social studies.
It is very important that we have
our students present on a daily
basis. However, if a student does
miss a test session, there will be
make-ups given at the end of each
subject’s blocked testing window.
Counseling Department
Enjoy a wonderful Spring!
The mission of the JCHS Counseling
Staff is to assist all students with
developing and achieving their
educational, career, and personal/
social goals in order to help them
become responsible and productive
citizens. If we are to meet these goals,
effective communication is a must.
Students have numerous chances to
visit with their counselor individually,
in small groups, or in classroom
situations. We hope they will take
advantage of these opportunities.
The ACT (college entrance exam)
is offered at JCHS on April 9, and
the deadline to register is March
4. Academy counselors will be
distributing ACT information to juniors
in American History and AP History
classes in February. This is an excellent
time for juniors to take this exam and,
of course, for any senior who has not
taken it. Registration information is
also available in the counseling offices,
or students can register online at
Getting Financial Aid for College
It is approaching that time of the year
when families prepare to apply for
federal financial aid in order to send
their sons/daughters to college. The
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal
Student Aid) is used to apply for state,
federal, and college-specific financial
aid that includes grants, scholarships,
campus work, and loans.
The information needed to complete
the FAFSA includes information from
2010 income tax returns. Therefore,
the FAFSA cannot be completed until
after January 1, 2011, but it should be
filed before March 1, 2011. Students
who apply for financial aid after March
1 usually receive less need-based aid.
The federal government is definitely
encouraging students to file their
FAFSA electronically. In order to do
this, you need to first secure a PIN for
both the student and the parent by
going to www.pin.ed.gov. You will
receive your PIN in a few days and can
proceed with completing the FAFSA by
going to www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Please contact Ernie Honas, Career
Counselor, with questions concerning
scholarships or financial aid.
Internships for 2011-2012
Juniors may now apply to be in the
Internship Program for their senior
year. The Internship Program is for
seniors who are interested in hands
on experience in their chosen career
field. Students must satisfy eligibility
requirements and have at least 2
periods to dedicate to an internship
placement for one semester of their
senior year. Credits and grades are
issued for an internship placement.
Applications are available from Mrs.
Davis in Deever 126. If you would like
more information, please contact Joy
Davis, Internship Coordinator at 717-
Enrollment for 2010-2011
Enrollment for 2011-2012 began the week of January
31. Freshmen enrollment takes place in Freshman
Communications classes; for sophomores and juniors it
takes place in English II and American History classes.
Each student will receive an enrollment packet that
contains a JCHS Course Catalog and other enrollment
materials. Students will turn in a completed course
selection form at the end of the classroom enrollment
sessions. In addition they will be encouraged to complete
a duplicate form and to take all enrollment information
home to share with their parents.
Parent Meetings to answer questions regarding
enrollment will be scheduled as follows:
March 1 , 7:00 p.m - B.I.T. - JCHS Library
March 1, 7:00 p.m. - F.A.H.S. - JCHS Cafeteria
March 1, 7:00 p.m. - S.E.T. - JCHS Shenk Gym
The counselors encourage students and parents to attend
one of these meetings. It would be helpful if students
and parents have discussed course selections and
formulated questions prior to attending the meeting.
Any adjustments to the classes that students have
selected must be made by the end of the school day on
March 3.
Geary County Reading Association Writing
Contest Award Winner
Ali Bontrager, sophomore English Honors II student, has
received notice that her writing entry in the Geary County
Reading Association Writing Contest has won an award.
Ali wrote an essay based on a quote by author James
Baldwin. He said, “I am what time, circumstance and
history have made of me, certainly, but I am also much
more than that. So are we all.” Ali will read her winning
essay at a public exhibition February 8 at the Junction
City Middle School, 6:00 p.m. All are invited to attend!
How to Succeed in College? Start
AVID
NOW!
Many parents dream of their children going to college.
However, 30% of college freshman drop out, and fewer than
60% earn a degree within even six years. Why?
Often, students are not ready for the rigor of college work,
even though they have earned a high school diploma. Taking
honors and Advanced Placement classes in high school
significantly increases a student’s chances of completing
college. Sound scary? AVID can help.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
This program supports students who enroll in at least one
honors, weighted, or Advanced Placement class each year of
high school, making them college ready.
In AVID class, they
• learn how to think and study like a college student
• learn how to lead, organize, and set goals
• prepare for college entrance tests like the ACT, PSAT, and
SAT.
• have tutorial groups with
college tutors
• visit college campuses
• surround themselves with peer
support—other kids determined
to succeed.
Some Requirements for
AVID Students
Acceptance into AVID
• GPA of 2.0 to 3.5.
• Hard worker, with a positive attitude and collaborative
nature.
• Evidence of at least one reason for support. Possible
reasons might include first-generation to attend college;
low-income; single-parent family; under-representation
racially, culturally or economically in colleges; deployed
parent(s); other, individual circumstances.
• Willingness to enroll in an honors, a weighted, or an AP
class
AVID is not an “at-risk” program. It is a college-readiness
program for students in the middle academically. As a
result, AVID is not for students who don’t do homework,
who consistently make Ds or Fs, or who are unmotivated
students.
Students will soon be enrolling for next year’s classes. Talk
with your student about whether AVID might help fulfill his
or her dreams of college success.
Rigor
Relationships
Greetings from the Fine Arts and
Human Services Academy!
We have had a wonderful semester and
we are proud of all that our students
have accomplished.
What is the
FAHS?
Our academy
focuses on helping
students reach
their goals during
and beyond high
school. Our specific
focus is on 3 of the
16 career clusters:
Human Services,
Education &
Training, and Arts,
AV Technology, &
Communications.
Students in the
FAHS should have
career aspirations
in one of those 3 clusters. Some of
those jobs include teacher, artist,
musician, social worker, child care, and
cosmetologist- just to name a few.
Job Shadowing
Job shadowing is a wonderful
opportunity for the students at JCHS
Sylvanna Hall, Kansas Kids Day Care
and in the FAHS we work hard to ensure
that students are on the right path to
a career they will enjoy. Students can
pick up job shadow applications in the
FAHS office. The job shadows are one
day experiences where the student gets
to shadow someone in a career they are
interested in. Once the student returns
the completed form, Mrs. McNeil, the
academy leader, will arrange the shadow.
The students’ only responsibility is to
show up to the job shadow ready to ask
questions and learn. We have placed
several students in job shadows this past
semester; here is what some of them
thought of the experience:
“It was fun helping the little
kids do their math work.”
-AMANDA OSBORN (interest:
elementary education)
“It was a very fun and
interesting experience!”
-AMBER MORETTI (interest:
middle school math)
“I had a great time…I
recommend this to anyone
who wants a fun, educational
look at what their preferred
job might be like.”
-SYLVANNA HALL (interest: early
childhood education)
“[My job shadow] helped me decide
what career I want to get into.”
-EBONY MONROE (interest: middle/
elementary education)
Encourage your student to find out more
about job shadowing from Mrs. McNeil.
CHOIR
Seniors Kimmy Johnson and Alexis
Miskevish represented JCHS in the North
Central District Honor Choir in December.
In addition to this distinction, Alexis
will go on to represent our entire North
Central District at the annual State of
Kansas Honor Choir in February. Students
audition with thousands of others across
the entire state of Kansas to be selected
for this choir. This is the second year in a
row that Alexis has made this elite group.
Alexis also represented our area as a
freshman in the middle level state honor
choir. Vocal students are currently gearing
up for solo and ensemble festivals to be
held in March and April.
JC Singers just returned from their second
journey to Omaha’s Singsation. Our group
showed vast improvement over last year’s
performance, and hopes to be added to
the finals round next year. Any student
interested in auditioning for next year’s
vocal groups needs to come by the choral
office to pick up information. Regular
attendance, strong academics, and a great
attitude are all required!
Fall Play: EGAD, the Woman in White
The Fall Play, “Egad, the Woman in White,”
closed to great acclaim in late November
2010. The cast and crew all performed
and did their duties flawlessly. What an
extremely professional and hard-working
group of students took to the Settles
Kim Johnson as well as
Chris Scott and Marvin
Fall Play careers on a high
note and should be proud
of their accomplishments.
With many
EGAD Cast
underclassmen returning,
next year’s cast and crew promises to
be equally as polished and professional.
Although the play for next year has yet
to be chosen, the future looks bright for
Beauty and the Beast
This spring, things will be getting magical
at JCHS as the Spring Musical, “Beauty and
the Beast” comes to life on the stage of the
Settles Auditorium. The students rehearse
Monday-Thursday evenings and every other
Saturday morning. We are hovering right
around 60 students in the cast. In addition,
we will have 10-15 students working
backstage to help with scene changes,
curtain, lights, sound, costumes and makeup.
There are many one-liner-roles, so
there are a lot of opportunities for many
members of the cast to shine (not just the
main characters).
The play stars senior Zan Bertilino as the
Beast and freshman Taylor Collette as Belle.
Zan has plans to attend K-State and major
in Music Education next fall. We wish him,
and the rest of the students luck, and we
hope you will all “be our guest” March 17-
19, 7 pm for this spectacular event. Tickets
will go on sale towards the end of February.
They are $4 and can be purchased through
the vocal department.
BAND
As always, we are extremely
proud of the JCHS Band
program under the direction
of TJ Taylor. This year has
been another stunning
success. The marching
band received a 2 rating at Central States
Marching Festival at KSU and a 1 rating
at High Plains Marching Festival at Hays.
They went on to win the Audience Appeal
Award at the Fiesta Bowl Band
Championship and also placed
4th in Class B at the Fiesta
Bowl Parade.
We have several individuals
deserving of recognition for
their participation at the KSU
Concert Band Clinic: Ronald
Atkinson, Alicia Dozier, Zach
Fischer, Rachel Gooldy, Kristen
Graham, Mirina Landry, Alexis Miskevish,
Sarah Schmalzried, Tiffany Scheid, and
Kayla Tully. We are very proud of them!!!
Alexis Miskevish was also named
Outstanding Musician for the Gage
Honor Band at the KSU clinic as well
as being selected to the Kansas Music
Educators Association State wide honor
choir for the 2nd year. Congratulations
Alexis!
We wish the band and
choirs luck in all their
upcoming events:
Piano Class
Alexis Miskevish
Outstanding Musician for Gage
Honor Band
Piano class has been offered at Junction
City High School for the past seven years.
Due to insufficient funds, the
students have been learning
and performing on inadequate
equipment. Each piano class
is capped at ten students,
however, JCHS only had four
working keyboards. These
students were attempting
to share and learn on nonweighted
keyboards that did
not offer all 88 keys or a damper pedal,
both of which are needed by the tenth
week of the beginning piano classes.
These limitations hindered the quality
of music education the students truly
deserved.
In November 2010, USD 475 purchased
ten Kawai CL 25 digital pianos and one
Kawai CP 139 digital piano for the piano
classes at Junction City High School. The
opportunities for piano classes are now
endless! Each student is now able to
practice on his or her own digital keyboard
without having to switch back and forth
with another student. Each digital piano is
equipped with 88 weighted keys (offering
the feel of an acoustic concert piano), a
damper pedal, a metronome, and several
more features that are available for
individual use.
The Kawai CP 139 (used as a teacher’s
unit) is equipped with 88 weighted keys,
a damper pedal, a sostenuto pedal, a soft
pedal, USB audio, CD-
RW drive, and endless
sound and recording
capabilities. With the
Kawai CP 139, students
are able to record
original compositions
with over 900 different
sounds, burn the
composition to a
CD, and print the score directly from the
keyboard.
Students in Piano Class
All eleven digital pianos are incorporated
into a Kawai music lab system. This
system allows the teacher to work with
an individual student, a pair of students,
small groups, or the entire class. A student
can also be isolated for private practice.
Individual headphones are equipped with
a microphone, allowing the teacher and
student(s) to hold a conversation over the
system.
We are extremely proud to share our Blue
Jay pride throughout Kansas as we are one
of the very few schools in the state that
offer piano classes with state of the art
equipment. On behalf of all the students
benefitting from the Kawai piano lab,
Sharyn Worcester and Jennifir McGillis,
piano instructors, would like to thank
the administrators of Junction City High
School and USD 475 for supporting music
education and making it possible to have a
greater impact on the fine arts.
