an Italian colony, where the mother tongue is poken, Italian
tradition, ideal , and custom are perpetuated and a national solidarity
is maintained. In the e Italian blocks the children are bilingual, the
parochial and even the public chool are almost exclusively of Italian
composition.
The Italians are located in two principal group , "Little Italy" from
East Il9th to East 125th treets on Iurray Hill and "1ayfield Road ,
in the midst of which Alta House stands, and "Big Italy," formerly confined
to the Broadway, Orange and Ontario district, now by reason of
the interurban inva ion, scattered eastward along Woodland to E. 40th
Str et. Jutside of these are six smaller colonie with from a dozen to
two dozen families in each.
