This figure, however, far from indicates their influence, trength, and civic importance. wing to the convergence of this pOI ulation into r tricted area from which other nati nalitie are sub tantially exelucl d, the econd generation, natiye born of foreign parents, are reared in what is practically an Italian colony, where the mother tongue is poken, Italian tradition, ideal , and custom are perpetuated and a national solidarity is maintained. In the e Italian blocks the children are bilingual, the parochial and even the public chool are almost exclusively of Italian composition. The Italians are located in two principal group , "Little Italy" from East Il9th to East 125th treets on Iurray Hill and "1ayfield Road , in the midst of which Alta House stands, and "Big Italy," formerly confined to the Broadway, Orange and Ontario district, now by reason of the interurban inva ion, scattered eastward along Woodland to E. 40th Str et. Jutside of these are six smaller colonie with from a dozen to two dozen families in each. (a) In the vicinity of vVe t 33rd and Fulton. (b) West 65th to 69th Streets, between Detroit and the lake. (c) orth of Miles off Broadway. (d) Elizabeth above East 93rd. ( e) Cannon treet and Ea t 86th. (f) St. Clair and 152nd, sometimes called the "Collinwood settlement." 10
THE ITALIANS O F CLEVELAND The consistency of the first two named ,districts has not con iderably changed since 191 1, when the U. S. Immigration Commi ion reported the householders of the Mayfield Road District as being 96% Italian born, 2% of Italian parent , and 2% other nati nalitie . The earliest settlers in the district were for the mo t part from Central and outh Central Italy. More recently, however, an increasing number have come from icily, and this colony is mother of the "\Vood: hill and Collinwood ettlements.
