'Thomas Rini, the Geraci Bros., Salemi and Trentanelli, large fruit dealers
on "Woodland, that of Dicicco and Ranallo, the largest Italian dry goods
merchants in the city, the Messrs. Gatto, of the Mayfield Builders Supply
Co., Tony Martese, 'the plasterer, D. Costanzo on East 38th, and P.
Piscopo, the builder on Murray Hill, are w II known to Americans as
well as to the Italians' of the· city. Such a list is imposing, e pecially
when one remembers that these firms have risen on a foundation of
capital accumulated -little by little through sheer thrift, enterprise and
self-renuncia tion.

Nor hould one neglect to mention
the bankers in these colonies, combining
as they do the office of real
estate dealers, loan makers, steamship
and transportation agents and
foreign exchange places. Most of
them operate in conjunction with
( some large American bank, and they
perform no small service to the community,
bridging over economic
crises and rendering liquid the financial
resources of these settlements.
There are many houses doing
this business whose managers have
O'iven the majority of their time
throughout the past three years to
the financing of our Liberty Loans
and VV. S. S. issues among their
countrymen.
