2002-03 Roster / Women’s Preview It has been two years since the Bloomsburg University women’s tennis team claimed a PSAC championship. But, with a strong group of returning players, the Huskies are primed and ready to regain the championship trophy they have claimed seven times previously in school history. To accomplish the goal of winning the PSAC the team will once again need great play from its top duo of Erin Bartsch and Beth Fulton. Bartsch is the reigning PSAC Athlete of the Year in women’s tennis and compiled 21 wins last season. Fulton was a solid number two player last season and earned second team All-PSAC honors. “I will be expecting big things from both Erin and Beth,” said coach Marty Coyne. “Erin was the top-ranked player in the East Region last year, while Beth is a very tough player who should move up full-time this year to the number two spot in the lineup.” Of course you need more than two players to win a title and the Huskies have several strong players battling for time in spots three through six. Julie Bramante was a pleasant surprise for the Huskies last year and was listed as the Player to Watch in the East Region. Miranda Campbell struggled somewhat last season, but was 5-2 at the number five spot last season. The Huskies are looking for her to regain the form that helped her post 35 wins in her first two seasons. Julie McCulley also returns for the Huskies and will be looking for playing time at number six singles. “Julie Bramante really made great strides last year and Miranda has a big game that I know will help us post us some wins,” Coyne added. “Julie McCulley has also developed a better game and should help us at the bottom of the lineup.” Of course all good teams need an infusion of youth to set the stage for the future and the Huskies feel they have some good freshmen ready to contribute. Lindsey Wychoff had a tremendous high school career in Ohio and should crack the top five of the lineup, while Brande Hanstein and Lauren Colfer both are products of the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center in Philadelphia and will add depth to the team. “I am pleased with the freshmen we will have playing for us this year,” said Coyne. “All three have had good high school careers and will help us immediately.”
ERIN BARTSCH Women’s Player Profiles Was named the PSAC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Year following the 2001-02 season. Also named the team MVP for the second straight year. Won 13 of her first 14 matches of the year and finished with eight consecutive wins. Named first team All-PSAC as a sophomore. Won the Flight Three PSAC singles title and teamed to win the Flight One doubles title in 1999- 00. MIRANDA CAMPBELL SENIOR WARREN (WARREN) MAJOR: BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Year Sing. Doub. 1999-00 20-7 23-9 2000-01 15-10 14-11 2001-02 9-13 15-10 Totals 44-30 52-30 Posted wins in five consecutive matches during the 2001-02 season. Eight of her nine wins came in straight sets. As a freshman finised second in the PSAC championships in the Flight Six singles and Three doubles. JULIE MCCULLEY SENIOR WARREN (WARREN) MAJOR: POLITICAL SCIENCE Year Sing. Led the team with 22 wins playing primarily at number four singles. Had an 11-match winning streak snapped with a loss at the NCAA championships. Also won seven straight matches earlier in the season. SENIOR NESQUEHONING (TAMAQUA) MAJOR: BIOLOGY Year Sing. Lost just one set in winning two matches at the NCAA East Regional championships in ‘01-02. During a six-match win streak last season she dropped just six sets. Spent her first two seasons playing at Division I Virginia Tech. * given a red-shirt year due to injury.
