Men’s 2001-02 Season Review/Results<br />

Oct. 7-8—<strong>Bloomsburg</strong> <strong>University</strong> men’s<br />

tennis player Alex Kalezic advanced to<br />

the semifinals of the “A” Draw at the ITA<br />

East Regional championships being held<br />

at <strong>Bloomsburg</strong>. However, Kalezic lost to<br />

Mukumdam Namdakum of Kutztown, 6-2,<br />

6-3.<br />

Oct. 14—In the team’s only two dual<br />

matches of the fall portion of its season,<br />

the Huskies beat both Slippery Rock and<br />

West Chester. <strong>Bloomsburg</strong> beat the Rock,<br />

9-0 and West Chester, 7-2.<br />

Jan. 27—Penn State opened the 2002<br />

portion of the Huskies’ season and beat<br />

the visitors, 7-0. Kris Shumway and Mike<br />

McGrath battled hard at number one<br />

singles before losing, 6-3.<br />

Feb. 17—<strong>Bloomsburg</strong> evened its record at<br />

3-3 with a 5-2 win over Duquesne in<br />

Altoona. Kris Shumway and Mike McGrath<br />

were two-time winners for the Huskies.<br />

Mar. 11-14—<strong>Bloomsburg</strong> went 4-0 on its<br />

annual spring trip to Hilton Head, SC. The<br />

Huskies beat Messiah, 9-0; Skidmore, 6-3;<br />

Edinboro, 9-0; and George Mason, 6-3.<br />

Against George Mason Mark Velleck won<br />

an exciting three-set match at number<br />

three singles.<br />

Apr. 5-6— At the <strong>Bloomsburg</strong> Duals the<br />

Huskies ran their winning streak to seven<br />

with wins over Concordia, 6-3 and Franlin<br />

Pierce, 5-1, before losing to Assumption<br />

2001-02 RESULTS (13-7)<br />

Apr. 10—Kris Shumway was the lone<br />

winner for the Huskies in an 8-1 loss to<br />

Kutztown.<br />

Apr. 16—<strong>Bloomsburg</strong> tuned up for the<br />

PSAC championships with a 6-3 win over<br />

Lehigh. Mark Velleck picked up a big<br />

three-set win for the Huskies, winning<br />

the final set 10-6.<br />

Apr. 19-21—The Huskies opened play at<br />

the PSAC championships with a 6-0 win<br />

against Slippery Rock and then beat<br />

Millersville, 5-3, in the semifinals. Facing<br />

Kutztown for the second time in 11 days,<br />

the Huskies again lost to the Golden<br />

Bears, this time by a score of 5-3. The<br />

Huskies led 2-1 coming out of doubles,<br />

but dropped four of the five singles<br />

matches completed. Shumway was a twotime<br />

winner for the Huskies.<br />

May 3-4—Travelling to Assumption<br />

College for the NCAA East Regional<br />

Championships, the Huskies opened play<br />

with a 5-0 win over Queens College. With<br />

a berth to the NCAA championships on<br />

the line in the finals, the Huskies<br />

dropped a 5-4 decision to the host team,<br />

Assumption, to end the year at 12-8.<br />

<strong>Bloomsburg</strong> trailed 2-1 coming out of<br />

doubles, but despite winning two, threeset<br />

matches, the Greyhounds would earn<br />

the trip to the NCAA championship<br />
