Men’s 2001-02 Season Review/Results
Oct. 7-8—Bloomsburg University men’s
tennis player Alex Kalezic advanced to
the semifinals of the “A” Draw at the ITA
East Regional championships being held
at Bloomsburg. However, Kalezic lost to
Mukumdam Namdakum of Kutztown, 6-2,
6-3.
Oct. 14—In the team’s only two dual
matches of the fall portion of its season,
the Huskies beat both Slippery Rock and
West Chester. Bloomsburg beat the Rock,
9-0 and West Chester, 7-2.
Jan. 27—Penn State opened the 2002
portion of the Huskies’ season and beat
the visitors, 7-0. Kris Shumway and Mike
McGrath battled hard at number one
singles before losing, 6-3.
Feb. 17—Bloomsburg evened its record at
3-3 with a 5-2 win over Duquesne in
Altoona. Kris Shumway and Mike McGrath
were two-time winners for the Huskies.
Mar. 11-14—Bloomsburg went 4-0 on its
annual spring trip to Hilton Head, SC. The
Huskies beat Messiah, 9-0; Skidmore, 6-3;
Edinboro, 9-0; and George Mason, 6-3.
Against George Mason Mark Velleck won
an exciting three-set match at number
three singles.
Apr. 5-6— At the Bloomsburg Duals the
Huskies ran their winning streak to seven
with wins over Concordia, 6-3 and Franlin
Pierce, 5-1, before losing to Assumption

2001-02 RESULTS (13-7)
Apr. 10—Kris Shumway was the lone
winner for the Huskies in an 8-1 loss to
Kutztown.
Apr. 16—Bloomsburg tuned up for the
PSAC championships with a 6-3 win over
Lehigh. Mark Velleck picked up a big
three-set win for the Huskies, winning
the final set 10-6.
Apr. 19-21—The Huskies opened play at
the PSAC championships with a 6-0 win
against Slippery Rock and then beat
Millersville, 5-3, in the semifinals. Facing
Kutztown for the second time in 11 days,
the Huskies again lost to the Golden
Bears, this time by a score of 5-3. The
Huskies led 2-1 coming out of doubles,
but dropped four of the five singles
matches completed. Shumway was a twotime
winner for the Huskies.
May 3-4—Travelling to Assumption
College for the NCAA East Regional
Championships, the Huskies opened play
with a 5-0 win over Queens College. With
a berth to the NCAA championships on
the line in the finals, the Huskies
dropped a 5-4 decision to the host team,
Assumption, to end the year at 12-8.
Bloomsburg trailed 2-1 coming out of
doubles, but despite winning two, threeset
matches, the Greyhounds would earn
the trip to the NCAA championship
round.
