Take home messages • Tumor immunology is the study of what happens when immune cells and tumor cells interact • The immune system can prevent cancer by destroying especially immunogenic cancers – The destruction of immunogenic cancer cells leads to a sculpted repertoire, a process known as “cancer immunoediting” • The immune system can promote cancer by enhancing angiogenesis, providing growth factors, and inducing “compensatory proliferation” that drives mutation • Tumor immunotherapy represents a potentially powerful cure to cancer that is still in the very earliest stages of development – Some strategies include increasing co-stimulatory molecules, augmenting MHC class I expression, boosting host cells via cytokines, vaccination with tumor specific antigens, antibody-dependent killing of tumors
Some major unanswered questions • What are the genes involved in elimination, equilibrium, and escape? • How do carcinogenic pathways influence immunity? • How do we convert tumor-promoting inflammation into tumor-eliminating immune surveillance?
