Marci Baker
Not Your Grandmother’s Log Cabin
Marci sewed her first quilt when she was nine years
old. Her interest continued through high school and
college. Her education in math and engineering was
put to excellent use in simplifying techniques to help
others with their quilting. As a result, Marci has been
deeply involved as an author with her Not Your
Grandmother’s Quilts series of quilting books and
as creator of other products, such as the Qtools
and Know Before You Sew solution cards.
Not only is Marci a popular teacher at quilting guilds
and trade shows across the United States and
Canada, but her expertise is also recognized
internationally. She has been featured in Redbook;
on HGTV's "Simply Quilts"; NBC’s “The Jane Pauley
Show”; highlighted in Traditional Quiltworks; and has
been published in numerous quilting magazines. Marci
had been nominated for The Professional Quilter
magazine’s "Teacher of the Year" award in 2002 and
2005.
Marci, her husband Clint, their two sons, and pet
snake currently live in Fort Collins, Colorado, where
they enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful creation of
life near the mountains.
Lecture: April 18

OPERATION: BLOCKS FOR THE BRAVE
We are grateful to Tracy Fish who for the second
year applied for and received a monetary grant
through a foundation which she supports. These
funds will enable us to buy backing fabric and hire
long-arm quilters for this project. In addition, Ann
Macias applied for a grant through her employer
Sempra Energy and received monies to support the
guild's philanthropic endeavors.
This month we received several bags of patriotic
fabric from guild members to be used in this on-going
project. In addition, our thanks go out to Zora
Robinson for a large fabric donation to this wonderful
cause.
At the March meeting we received 10 completed
quilts, two tops and six pillowcases ... our thanks to
one and all. We are in need of 12-1/2" blocks to lay
out quilt tops. These are simple blocks and the
pattern and kits are available at the Blocks For The
Brave table. There is no need to check out the kits,
just take as many as you wish and return them when
it's convenient.
The next Sew-In will be Sunday, April 17th from
10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the American Legion Hall in
Norwalk, 11986 Front Street.

Blocks for the Brave Co-Chairs
SATURDAY SEW-IN
This month's date is April 9. The Saturday Sew-In
meets at the United Methodist on the 2nd Saturday
of the month from 10:00 am to 2:30pm.
You can work on your own projects or assist with the
ongoing philanthropies of Kumfort Quilts, Blocks for
the Brave or the Afghanistan project. Tables are
available as are Guild members to help with the
sandwiching of your quilts. Bring your sewing
machine and your lunch.

WORKSHOP: APRIL 19
Students will construct log cabin diamonds and
triangles using easy step-by-step instructions to
create unusual and gorgeous designs. To top it off,
the simply amazing designs are amazingly simple,
providing success for all levels of quilters. Just cut
up your scraps and paint with strips. "Bet you can't
make just one!"
PATTERN FOR APRIL 19 TH WORKSHOP
WE WILL MISS YOU!!!
We will miss all of you who did not rejoin our guild.
If you still want to send your dues of $25.00 we will
be very glad to keep you on the mailing list. Contact
Martha Fandel or Brenda Gomez if you want to
continue being a member of the guild. This will be
the last newsletter some of you will receive. The
deadline for membership was March 31, 2011.
AVOCADO FESTIVAL – MAY 21 ST
FSQG will have 2 booths at the Avocado Festival,
Saturday, May 21 st . We will be fundraising for Blocks
for the Brave, selling tickets for the Opportunity
Quilt and selling boutique items. If you have hand
made items you would like to sell please contact me.
If you sell an item 25% of your sale price will go to
the guild. (The same arrangement we have at the
Quilt Show.) The Avocado Festival will be held at the
Park, 1885 N. Hacienda, La Habra Heights from 10 – 4
on Saturday, May 21 st .

BLOCK OF THE MONTH
Thanks to all of you who participated and made Block
of the Month so successful this year. We had 25
very happy members at the meeting. Three members
won blocks for this month and we look forward to
seeing them in quilts. We had 22 members win a set
of 4 fat quarters because they participated by
making blocks throughout the year. Though it took a
bit of time during the meeting - it was fun to watch
Tina run all over the room handing out fat quarters.
Tina is going to do a great job this coming year and
we are glad that a few ladies volunteered to help her
do the cutting and Ann Macias volunteered to share
the responsibility during the meetings. We hope you
will give them the same support you have given us.
Patterns for the whole year are for sale for $1.00 -
what a bargain. Judy Helling has again designed 4 of
the appliqué patterns so they will be fun to do.
If you didn't pick up the blue backing for our Easter
ducky, use any blue fabric and that will work. We're
looking forward to seeing lots of those cute blocks.
What a neat wall hanging or child's quilt they would
make.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!! What a fun
birthday party we had at our last meeting!! Our
birthday cakes were delicious!! Thank you to
Jeanette Jones for organizing a wonderful birthday
atmosphere with balloons and beautiful tables – how
about those centerpieces?! Did you have your
birthday last month, and get to take one home?
Thanks also to her band of helpers and social
committee for setting everything up! As we head into
our 31 st year, I know FSQG is going to be more active
and more philanthropic than the years before. I’m
also excited to greet a wonderful new (& continuing)
Board of Directors. I’ll enjoy meeting and working
with the new additions to the Board this year; and
sorry to see the familiar faces leave, but I know they
will continue being active in other aspects of the
Guild. I really appreciate everyone’s help and support
in my first year as President.
The new Committee Chairs will be in full
charge this month and, hopefully, all have received
Procedure Books for their positions as well as an endof-the
year report from their predecessor. If you
haven’t, please let me know. Thanks to all the
department Committee members, too; you are so
appreciated for helping with guild activities.
This Spring is a busy one for us! With all the
events coming up in the next few months where we
will get to showcase our Opportunity Quilt and sell
raffle tickets; I encourage everyone to sign up to
work at least one of the events. You will have so
much fun and meet such great people, that I know you
will sign-up again & again. And don’t forget our Block
For The Brave project at these events as well. SO
MUCH TO DO!! SUCH A GOOD CAUSE!!

KUMFORT QUILTS

putting together and quilting the Kumfort Quilts.

INFORMATION ABOUT PATTERNS ON
PAGE 9
As we usually include our block of the month patterns
a month ahead of time, I have put two patterns on
one page. The duck should measure about 4 ½ inches
to the tip of the beak and 3 ½ inches tall. It is
placed in the middle of the blue fabric that was
handed out at the March guild meeting. The May
pattern has the finished sizes on the triangles and
squares. (don’t forget the ¼ inch seam).

2012 Quilt Show Planning Meeting
Tuesday, April 5th, 7:00pm at La Habra Community
Center

FUNDRAISER FABRIC SALE!!
Arrive EARLY and bring your checkbooks or cash to
the April Guild meeting! From 6 to 6:45 PM
BEAUTIFUL quilting fabrics will be sold from $3 to $5
a yard with 20% of profits going to the guild. This is a
one time opportunity to build your stash and help the
guild, too!
Also available for sale but too big to bring are floor
lamps with large 8" magnifying glass, a Koala sewing
table, books, and many quilting tools. If you're
interested in seeing these items and many more, call
Steve Schlesinger at [909] 393-3169. He is helping
his dad sell his deceased mother's quilting
supplies......proceeds will benefit Steve's daughters'
college expenses as well as our guild.
AFGHANISTAN PROJECT
Thank you for your continued support of our troops
with your donations. This month four boxes of fabric,
yarn, and completed quilts have been mailed. There
are now three sewing machines in use and more
knitters and crocheters have joined the group in
making garments & blankets which the troops donate
to local hospitals, schools, and jails in the Kabul area.
Fabric received at the March guild meeting was given
to the Quilts for Japan project along with completed
quilt tops and backings as there is a time limit for
quilts to be made and shipped to Japan. Someone at
the meeting commented, "No one makes and donates as
many quilts as our guild does!" How right she is!! We
have an awesome group of ladies who give of their
time, talent, and fabrics so generously!! You are SO
appreciated!! THANK YOU!!

2012 OPPORTUNITY QUILT HITS THE
ROAD
Spring is here! Beautiful Spring weather welcomed our
Opportunity Quilt at the 2011 Spring Fling Shop Hop.
FSQG members attended and sold raffle tickets to
Hop participants during this three day March event.
Every two years the guild produces a wonderful hand
appliquéd, hand quilted raffle quilt. The 2012 Quilt is
another Guild masterpiece! The Quilt has been named:
Nature's Friends to go along with the 2012 Quilt show
title of "A Garden of Friendship Quilts".
This raffle Quilt raises funds to operate the Guild for
two years providing members with wonderful speakers,
workshops, and the means to do philanthropy projects
in our community. Each member is asked to help at
scheduled events by selling tickets and sharing our
passion for quilting.
Three other events are coming up and we still need
FSQG members for all shifts at
these events. Upcoming events are:
Saturday, April 9 -- Young Piecemakers Quilt Show in
Corona (2 people needed)
Friday – Sunday, April 15, 16 & 17 – LA Habra Citrus
Fair (9 people needed)
Saturday, April 16 – Santa Fe Springs Children's Day
(6 people needed)
