SERVING THE GREATER WHITTIER-LA HABRA AREA
www.fsqg.org
Volume 32 Number 9 November 2012
Guest Speaker Julie Silber
Julie Silber will be the November speaker. Her program will be The Amish and
Their Quilts.
Julie and her partner Jean Dementer are proprietors of the Quilt Complex which
specializes in quilt related services and buying, selling and appraising quilts dating
from 1780 to 1950.
Here’s their website
http://www.thequiltcomplex.com/
Julie Silber is one of the world's most respected quilt experts. She has been selling
antique quilts to museums, businesses, and individuals since 1968. Julie was the
curator of the world renowned Esprit Quilt Collection in San Francisco and is the coauthor
of the critically acclaimed books, Hearts and Hands and Amish: The Art of the
Quilt.
Julie’s expertise in appraisal focuses on quilts made before and during the 1950’s and 1960’s . She will be
at the La Habra United Methodist Church 2 hours prior to the meeting to do appraisals for the Guild. Anyone
wishing to have a quilt appraised please contact Bonnie Smith or Barbara Clemens. The appraisal will be
informal with approximate value . Anyone needing a written appraisal please note that her reduced fee for the
Guild is $75.00 per quilt and will come in the mail after the Guild meeting. Julie noted in her phone
conversation that most quilts are covered under homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies with proper
photographic documentation. If someone’s treasure is extremely valuable and requires an appraisal , she will
be glad to assist, or in the case of more modern quilts, refer the owner to an expert in modern quilt appraisal.
So come and enjoy
Those members wishing to sign up for an informal appraisal, contact Bonnie Smith (440-590-5100)
or Barbara Clemens (562-697-1347).
Take a look at Julie’s blog
WORKSHOPS
There will be no workshop for November. See the Program Chair’s article for what is happening right before
our meeting in November. The next workshop will be in January.
REMINDER: If you have signed up for a workshop and cannot attend please CALL ME. You can tell someone
else, but make sure you call me direct or email me as I don’t always get your cancellation if you tell someone
else. If you call and leave a message and/or email, I will return it with confirmation that I got your message
and cancel your registration.
Paying at sign-up: The decision of paying at sign-up or at the door has been at the Workshop Chair’s
discretion. It has always worked out extremely well to pay at the door up until Saturday’s workshop. The
attendance was disappointing in that only half the people that signed up actually attended. I feel that as Guild
members we all feel an allegiance to the Guild and when we sign-up we intend on paying and attending.
Sometimes life does get in the way and you just can’t make it, but the past history of the workshop shows, it
always has worked. When I was a new member, there was a hard and fast rule that you sign-up and had a
week to pay. No ifs, ands or buts. So, I was usually sending in my check by mail. That rule has been relaxed
over the years and, I think for the better. It’s a refreshing break from the world’s rules and regulations, and the
must do’s and must nots.
However, Saturday served as an example of why we have asked in the past for payment at sign-up. I can’t tell
you why we had so many cancellations , and I hope it was just a fluke.
I am not going to belabor this issue, because the history of payments and attendance has been excellent. So I
would just like to remind everyone that if you sign up, please do so with every intention of attending.
STAMPS: Again, most people are leaving before the back of their membership card is stamped for
attending the workshop. Please call me if you missed getting stamped for any of the workshops, and I’ll
check my records and stamp them at November’s meeting. I want everyone who is entitled to a Free
workshop to get it!!! But it is up to you to get your card stamped and keep a record of the workshops you
attend. I know this is a new procedure, but I think once everyone catches on, it will be a good one.
President's Message
I hope you all enjoyed Bev Smyth's trunk show as much as I did. She shared so many beautiful quilts and
such a variety.
Our November speaker is Julie Silber. As stated on her website, Julie is a well known acknowledged expert in
the field of appraising antique and vintage quilts. If you have quilts made between 1780 and 1950 be sure to
make an appointment with Bonnie Smith to have them appraised.
If you didn't attend the October skills building workshop you missed a good one.
Thanks to all our members who shared their skills with the attending students.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our next meeting on November 19, 2012
Mary Stephens
President

Komfort Quilts.
We were able to donate 12 quilts this month to La Cada. This organization helps in a variety of ways for those in need.
They are located in Santa Fe Springs.
Martha Fandel , Pauline Perez
Also I would like to advertise for sale Grace NM-EZ3 Quilting Frame. This frame is for hand quilting and will handle
crib to queen-size
Purchased for $250 will sell for $125. I quiilted several quilts on it, and decided I’m not a hand quilter. ( Please don’t
reveal this horrible secret to anyone in our guild, as you know what great hand quilters we have, and I am already in
awe of them.)
Martha Fandel 562-695-5339
PHILANTHROPY
Thanks you all for your generosity!!
Canned goods and money collected Monday night were delivered to Martha Lester, Executive
Director of The Gary Center. She was thrilled & gave me a tour of the facilities where they provide
dental care and counseling to all ages on a sliding fee schedule. They feed 160 - 175 families who
must attend nutrition & safety training led by St. Jude and local poilice to qualify for food program.
They have a Christmas party every year with games and food & pictures with Santa......each child
from the above families is given a wrapped gift......this is something we can help with as last year
there were not enough gifts for all!
Needed are: Toys, clothing, Target gift cards, whatever you can envision for 0 - 18 year olds!!
Also wrapping paper is needed!
Bring what you can to our November 19th Guild Meeting........money would be appreciated as they
can purchase whatever items are needed to insure that all children are gifted!!
Thank you for your 2013 Philanthropy Recommendations. The Committee will meet at
Bev's Quilting Cabin at 2 PM on Thursday, Nov. 8, to tally your choices and then decide
who gets how much! Results will be announced at the November Guild Meeting so
checks can be sent to the non-profits chosen in time for holiday needs.
on behalf of the guild, 27 quilts to be presented to service personnel with physical and psychological wounds.
At our October meeting we received 9 completed quilts, seven tops and 23 pillow
cases.
Thank you Stitching Friends Together Friendship Group
Community Events
Oct 20 & 21 were busy days as our members were at two community events. Sat. & Sunday the guild had a
booth at the Harmony Center Arts & Crafts Fair in uptown Whittier. Eight members sold boutique items and
explained about the Blocks for the Brave signature quilts. We took in $709 in sales and $57 in BofB donations.
Another 6 members were at Hurst Ranch where we had a mini quilt display, children's craft project and BofB
signature quilts. We took in $75 in sales and $107 in BofB donations - way to go Leona!!
Thanks to everyone who helped out and shared the guild's passion for quilting with the community.
