Don’t forget our Christmas Potluck Dinner on <strong>December</strong> 17, <strong>2012</strong> at our <strong>December</strong><br />
meeting. We’re looking forward to a nice time and lots of good food. Bonnie Smith<br />
has planned a special evening and I know everyone is going to enjoy themselves.<br />

<strong>December</strong>, <strong>2012</strong> President’s Message<br />
What an interesting presentation Julie Silber did on Amish quilts. Although I’ve always admired them, I knew<br />
very little about the history. I really enjoyed seeing the samples that she brought to share.<br />
I hope that all of you who had your quilts appraised obtained valuable information on your treasures. Seeing<br />
some of those shared during Show and Tell was fun.<br />
Don’t forget that we are having our holiday potluck at the <strong>December</strong> meeting. With all the great cooks we<br />
have, this meeting should be really yummy. Bonnie Smith is arranging the entertainment and we will be<br />
hearing from the recipients of our Philanthropy gifts.<br />
I look forward to seeing all of you at our next meeting on <strong>December</strong> 17, <strong>2012</strong><br />

PHILANTHROPY<br />
Once again, a BIG THANK YOU for the boxes and bags full of donated "goodies"<br />
and for the money, too. Everything was delivered to The Gary Center where your<br />
gifts will be wrapped and given out to the children of local families at the center's<br />
annual Christmas Party.<br />
We'll be presenting checks to local non-profit groups at our <strong>December</strong> guild meeting.<br />
A representative from each charity has been asked to attend [all were so THRILLED<br />
to be invited] and we'll try to have one guest at each of the dinner tables to meet<br />
our members. Each will be given an opportunity to tell us a bit more about how they<br />
help others in our community when the checks are handed out. You won't want to miss<br />
out on the good food and fellowship and meeting these special guests!!<br />

Diane Miller passed away November 14, <strong>2012</strong> in Huntington Beach. There will be<br />
a memorial service sometime in January. The date will be announced.<br />
Liz Balch's husband has been in St. Jude rehabilitation for a week. He has been in<br />
the hospital for 7 weeks after having back surgery. He is very weak.<br />
SUNSHINE<br />
Judy Christopher's granddaughter is the head drum major in her high school. They<br />
have won the state championship.<br />
Kristi Elmquist's father celebrated his 90th birthday last month.
Blocks for the Brave<br />
Arline Arnold and Laurie Grose represented the <strong>Guild</strong> with the Block For The<br />
Brave display at La Mirada’s Salute to Veteran’s Observance ceremony on<br />
November 5 th at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. Special guests<br />
included Louis Zamperini, an Olympian, World War II veteran and former<br />
prisoner of war. Also, Staff Sergeant John E Mejia, a U.S. Marine with five<br />
tours of duty. Veterans also displayed their war memorabilia including medals<br />
and photographs. La Mirada VFW Post 9148, Ladies Auxiliary, and Boy Scout<br />
troops also participated in the ceremony. It was a pleasure to participate in<br />
this special event and show the <strong>Guild</strong>’s work with Blocks For The Brave.<br />
Operation: Blocks For The Brave<br />
A huge thanks goes to Nell Mosley and friends for donating 27 patriotic presentation<br />
pillow cases. Thanks to all who returned nine completed quilts, six kits and many<br />
blocks at the November guild meeting. This month we delivered eight completed<br />
quilts to the Blocks For The Brave coordinators.<br />
We have added a new Scrappy Strip patriotic block to the project, where you sew<br />
red, white and blue strips in various widths diagonally on a 13" muslin square. It is a fast and easy block, so stop by the<br />
Blocks For The Brave table to see an example and pick up a kit.<br />
The next Sew-In will be Sunday, <strong>December</strong> 16th from 10:00 to 5:00 at the American Legion Hall in Norwalk, 11986 Front<br />
Street. The coordinators of the group have planned a Christmas Party on that day for homeless men and women<br />
veterans living in shelters. Lunch will be served by the members of the American Legion Post #359 and quilts and pillow<br />
cases will be presented to the veterans.<br />

In doing so you will continue to be a member in good standing for the next year.<br />
Being a member entitles you to receive a newsletter each month, to receive a directory,<br />
and most, but not least to attend some wonderful lectures by established quilters.<br />
The dues for 2013 are $30. Form Attached Due January 2 and delinquent March 31<br />
