HEALTH INSURANCE<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers undergraduate students the opportunity to enroll in an attractive<br />

health insurance plan at the outset <strong>of</strong> each academic year. All students residing in<br />

<strong>University</strong> housing units must participate in the <strong>University</strong>’s sponsored health program,<br />

unless written evidence is presented showing coverage under another health program (e.g.<br />

parent’s health policy).<br />

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> will help as many qualified students as possible to complete a college<br />

education. For this purpose the <strong>University</strong> maintains an Office <strong>of</strong> Financial Aid and all<br />

inquiries concerning such assistance should be made to the Director <strong>of</strong> Financial Aid, located<br />

in 401 St. Thomas Hall; Telephone (570) 941-7700; Fax (570) 941-4370. Assistance is<br />

also available on the web at http://www.scranton.edu or by e-mail: finaid@u<strong>of</strong>s.edu<br />

PROCEDURES FOR APPLYING FOR<br />

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID<br />

1. Submit the <strong>University</strong> Application for Financial Aid or the CSS Pr<strong>of</strong>ile form.<br />

Incoming students must complete and return the application by February 15th. Returning<br />

students must complete and return the application by April 15th.<br />

2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Priority filing<br />

date for incoming students is February 15th; for returning students, April 15th. FAFSA<br />

forms are available from high school guidance <strong>of</strong>ficers and from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong><br />

Financial Aid Office.<br />

In order to be eligible for financial aid, students are required to maintain satisfactory<br />

academic progress. Standards have been established for federal and <strong>University</strong> financial aid<br />

that measure a student’s progress toward a declared educational objective. <strong>The</strong>se guidelines<br />

include a maximum time frame for completing a degree, a minimum percentage <strong>of</strong> credits<br />

completed each academic year and a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average. A brief<br />

explanation is provided below.<br />

CREDIT REQUIREMENTS<br />

Full-time students are expected to complete their undergraduate degrees within six<br />

academic years. Part-time students are allotted a period <strong>of</strong> time that shall not exceed twelve<br />

academic years. Students enrolled in <strong>The</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Science, <strong>The</strong> Kania School <strong>of</strong><br />

Management and <strong>The</strong> J.A. Panuska, S.J., College <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies who are full time<br />

students must successfully complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> twenty-four credits per academic year.<br />

Students enrolled in Dexter Hanley College as full-time students must complete a minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> twenty-one credits, three-quarter-time students a minimum <strong>of</strong> fifteen credits, half-time<br />

students a minimum <strong>of</strong> nine credits and less-than-half-time students a minimum <strong>of</strong> six credits<br />

per academic year. Full-time dependent students who drop below 12 credits per semester<br />

may lose coverage under their parents’ health insurance plan and may be required to<br />

begin repayment <strong>of</strong> student loans.<br />

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS<br />

All students must maintain a cumulative grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 2.00 in order to<br />

demonstrate satisfactory academic standing. Academic scholarship recipients are required<br />

to maintain a cumulative grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 2.50, 3.00 or 3.25 depending on the scholarship.<br />
