THE DR. A.J. CAWLEY S C H O L A R S H I P—In memory <strong>of</strong> Dr. A.J. Cawley <strong>of</strong> Pittston,<br />

Pennsylvania, a scholarship was established by a legacy from his sister, Miss Ellen Cawley. A scholarship<br />

is given each year to a student majoring in electrical engineering.<br />

THE LEN AND DEBORAH GOUGEON ST. ANN’S S C H O L A R S H I P—Established in 1986<br />

through a gift from Drs. Len and Deborah Gougeon, this scholarship, based on need, provides assistance<br />

to a graduate <strong>of</strong> St. Ann’s Elementary School or a member <strong>of</strong> St. Ann’s Monastery Parish in <strong>Scranton</strong><br />

THE JOSEPH P. HARPER SCHOLARSHIP—A scholarship was established in 1967 to honor the<br />

memory <strong>of</strong> Joseph P. Harper, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> physics. An annual scholarship is given to a senior physics<br />

major upon the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the physics department and with the approval <strong>of</strong> the director <strong>of</strong> financial<br />

aid. <strong>The</strong> department <strong>of</strong> physics presents, with the scholarship, a citation reminding the recipient <strong>of</strong> the<br />

high scholarly ideals, exemplary life and dedicated service <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Harper.<br />

THE KATHRYN AND BERNARD HYLAND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXCEL-<br />

LENCE IN BIOLOGY––A gift from alumnus Bernard V. Hyland, M.D., made in loving memory <strong>of</strong> his<br />

parents, established an endowment in 1980 to perpetuate this annual scholarship. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is presented<br />

to a graduating senior from the biology department, who, in the opinion <strong>of</strong> the department’s faculty, has<br />

achieved distinction based on academic excellence in biology, personal integrity and concern for others.<br />

THE ROSE I. KELLY S C H O L A R S H I P—A <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> alumnus, Joseph Wineburgh,<br />

Ph.D., set in place an endowment to link the efforts <strong>of</strong> elementary and secondary school teachers to the<br />

achievements <strong>of</strong> college students. Each year, an outstanding student is selected by a committee appointed<br />

by the academic vice president. <strong>The</strong> Rose I. Kelly Scholarship winner is asked to name a high school<br />

or elementary teacher who most influenced his or her pre-college academic preparation. Both the student<br />

and the teacher from pre-college days are honored at a campus ceremony. Dr. Wineburgh established<br />

the program to honor an elementary teacher, Rose I. Kelly, who greatly influenced his life.<br />

THE LACKAWANNA COUNTY LAWYERS’ AUXILIARY S C H O L A R S H I P—Established in<br />

1982, this scholarship is annually presented to an outstanding graduating senior from Lackawanna<br />

County to provide scholarship assistance in the first year <strong>of</strong> law school. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is given directly<br />

by the Lawyers’ Auxiliary, upon the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> pre-law advisor.<br />

THE CHARLOTTE W. NEWCOMBE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP—This scholarship provides<br />

aid for mature, second-career women students.<br />

THE O’MALLEY & HARRIS PRE-LAW S C H O L A R S H I P—This scholarship, sponsored by the<br />

law firm, O’Malley & Harris, P.C., is based on the outcome <strong>of</strong> an annual competition among full-time<br />

undergraduates at both <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> and Marywood <strong>University</strong>. Entry information is<br />

available from either school’s pre-law advisor.<br />

THE CHRISTOPHER JASON PERFILIO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP —Christopher Perfilio<br />

passed away the summer before his senior year. His parents and older brother established this scholarship<br />

in his honor to assist philosophy and theology/religious studies students, as well as students in the<br />

Special Jesuit Liberal Arts program, who have records <strong>of</strong> high academic achievement and who demonstrate<br />

financial need.<br />

THE BERNARD SHAIR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP—This scholarship, established by family,<br />

friends and colleagues <strong>of</strong> Dr. Shair through the <strong>Scranton</strong> Area Foundation, is presented annually to a<br />

graduating senior <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> who has been enrolled in an accredited dental school.<br />

THE ARMOND AND BETTY STRUTIN S C H O L A R S H I P—This scholarship, created out <strong>of</strong> the<br />

g e n e r o s i t y and commitment to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> by Armond and Betty Strutin, is distributed<br />

each year to deserving students identified and designated by the Purple Club.<br />
