THE VELIO E. BERARDIS, M.D., MEMORIAL S C H O L A R S H I P—In 1989 Mrs. Dorothy<br />

Berardis established a scholarship to honor the memory <strong>of</strong> her husband, Velio E. Berardis, M.D. This<br />

scholarship provides awards, based on merit and need, to senior premedical students. Special preference<br />

is given to those who plan to attend Jefferson Medical College.<br />

THE MICHAEL J. BEVILACQUA S C H O L A R S H I P—<strong>The</strong> Bevilacqua family established this<br />

scholarship in 1989 as a memorial to honor the late Michael J. Bevilacqua. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is available<br />

to students from New Jersey families who have more than one studentin college at the same time.<br />

THE CHESTER AND VERONICA BOCHINSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP––This scholarship<br />

was established by James C. Bochinski, '70, and his sister, Marie A. Ryan, in memory <strong>of</strong> their parents.<br />

<strong>The</strong> scholarship is given to students from Northeastern Pennsylvania who pursue courses <strong>of</strong> study<br />

in psychology, nursing or business administration.<br />

THE FRANCIS P. BOLAND, M.D., MEMORIAL S C H O L A R S H I P—Family, friends and colleagues<br />

established this scholarship shortly after Dr. Boland’s death in 1987. Each year a grant is given<br />

to premedical students. <strong>The</strong> scholarshipis based primarily on merit.<br />

THE PAUL M. AND JOAN A. BORICK SCHOLARSHIP––Dr. Borick, '47, and his wife established<br />

this scholarship for students from Lackawanna and Wayne Counties who intend to pursue courses<br />

<strong>of</strong> study in microbiology.<br />

THE MARGARET BRIGGS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP—In 1995 the Margaret Briggs<br />

Foundation established this scholarship for an incoming freshman who demonstrates financial need.<br />

Students from Lackawanna County are given first consideration; thereafter qualified students from one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the surrounding counties are considered.<br />

THE WILLIAM J. AND ELIZABETH F. BURKAVAGE SCHOLARSHIP— Established in 1998,<br />

this scholarship is awarded to deserving students in Northeastern Pennsylvania, with first preference to<br />

those who live in Lackawanna County.<br />

THE BURKE FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP—Income from this scholarship benefits needy and deserving<br />

students. <strong>The</strong> Burke family was originally from the Hyde Park section <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>. Thomas F.<br />

Burke, '09, played a leadership role in establishing the scholarship.<br />

THE ALIO J. BUSELLI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP—Mrs. June Buselli established this scholarship<br />

in memory <strong>of</strong> her husband to assist incoming freshmen from Lackawanna County pursuing<br />

degrees in chemistry.<br />

THE REV. HENRY J. BUTLER, S.J., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS—<strong>The</strong> first scholarship, for<br />

students from Bishop Hannon High School in <strong>Scranton</strong>, was established in 1984 by James Summers in<br />

honor <strong>of</strong> the executive vice president <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> who died in <strong>of</strong>fice in 1981. A second Butler<br />

Scholarship, for students from <strong>Scranton</strong> High School, was established in 1985 by John A. McCrane, a<br />

classmate <strong>of</strong> Father Butler at Georgetown <strong>University</strong>.<br />

THE PRIVATE FRANK J. CALI SCHOLARSHIP—Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Cali created this scholarship<br />

in memory <strong>of</strong> Mr. Cali’s brother. It is available to any student who meets the <strong>University</strong>’s qualifications.<br />

THE BRIDGET CARNEY SCHOLARSHIP—This scholarship was established in 1972 by a bequest<br />

<strong>of</strong> James I. Kearney, M.D. Income from the scholarship, which is named to honor the memory <strong>of</strong> Dr.<br />

Kearney’s mother, is awarded to students, one or both <strong>of</strong> whose parents were or are parishioners <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

Ignatius Parish, Kingston, Pennsylvania.<br />

THE JAMES J. CLAUSS S C H O L A R S H I P—Established in 1973 by a local businessman and alumnus,<br />

'47, this scholarship provides aid to students who require financial assistance but do not qualify for most aid<br />

programs based on financial need. First consideration is given to Northeastern Pennsylvania students.<br />

THE JON A. CLAUSS SCHOLARSHIP—An endowed scholarship was established in 1980 to honor<br />

the memory <strong>of</strong> Jon A. Clauss, son <strong>of</strong> Dr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Clauss <strong>of</strong> Justus, Pennsylvania. Income<br />

from the scholarship is distributed to deserving young men and women.<br />
