Increased <strong>Steel</strong><br />

Coverage<br />

The phone rang earlier this year, and it was an engineer checking<br />

to see if [had any interest in a story idea he had sent to me. But<br />

even though it was a good idea-a little premature since the project<br />

was just underway, but still a good idea-I had to tell him we<br />

probably wouldn't be using it.<br />

During the next few months, two or three other people involved<br />

with that same airport project contacted me. They were unaware<br />

anyone else had spoken with me; they just thought I'd be interested<br />

in a good story idea. Unfortunately, I had to repeat that same sad<br />

message: It's a good story, but we just don't have room for it. •<br />

Now, though, it looks like I was wrong. We will be writing about<br />

that project-in the April issue of 1991. Not in the March-April issue;<br />

but in the April issue. Beginning in January, <strong>Modern</strong> <strong>Steel</strong><br />

COllstruction is going monthly.<br />

The reason for this increase in frequency is two-fold. First, there<br />

are stories out there that deserve to be covered; stories we would be<br />

covering if we had the space. And second, both our readers and<br />

advertisers have requested the change.<br />

The general themes that will be covered next year include: Seismic<br />

Design (january); Retail <strong>Construction</strong> (February); Foreign<br />

<strong>Construction</strong> and Structural Tubing (March); Airport <strong>Construction</strong><br />

(April); Residential <strong>Construction</strong> and Hotels (May); Convention<br />

Centers (july); Skyscrapers (August); Educational Buildings<br />

(September); LRFD (November); and Exposed <strong>Steel</strong> (December). The<br />

June issue will include coverage of the papers presented at the<br />

National <strong>Steel</strong> <strong>Construction</strong> Conference and the September issue<br />

will feature the <strong>Steel</strong> Bridge Award winners.<br />

In addition, MSC will continue its coverage of various product<br />

areas: Detailing Software (january); <strong>Steel</strong> Producers (February);<br />

Welding Products (March); Fasteners (April); SCC Exhibitors<br />

(May); Fireproofing (june); Engineering and <strong>Construction</strong> Computer<br />

Software (July); Curtain Walls (August); Metal Decks (September);<br />

Machinery, Tools & Material Handling (October); Foundries &<br />

Grating (November); and Coatings & Paint (December).<br />

If you have recently completed any projects that warrant editorial<br />

coverage, please drop me a note. Remember to include a brief •<br />

description of the project alo!1g with the names of the major building<br />

members involved (structural engineer, architect and owner). I look<br />
