community/ DONATIONS n HURRICANE RELIEF BAHAMA EFFORT Local businesses owners First State Bank of the Florida Keys and Peter Pike & Associates have launched a Keyswide effort to provide humanitarian help for Hurricane Irene victims in the Bahamas. Working with the American and Bahamas Red Cross organizations, First State Bank opened a Bahamas Hurricane Relief Fund bank account for cash donations to help the hurricane victims with water, food and shelter. DM I think I’m really lucky, because our band works together really, really well. We just have it dialed. We know each other’s personalities, and we divide up the division of labor, so it’s fair and feels right to everybody. ey call me little boss, but it’s a big joke because really we’re a democratic team, and it works out really well. GD Let’s talk a little bit about you. Where were you born and raised? DM Miami. I grew up in South Miami where Coral Gables, South Miami and Coconut Grove meet. ere’s this corner of unincorporated land that never got absorbed by those cities, and it’s a great little spot right off Old Cutler Road near the waterways there. GD Did you have to go far to get musical inspiration or people locally out of the Miami area influenced you? DM ere certainly were people in my hometown that influenced me. ere are great musicians there, and I was able to connect with some of them. I also was lucky enough to travel with my parents where I was exposed to all kinds of music, especially church and classical music. My mother is from Mississippi, so we would travel to the South, and I got exposed to all kinds of rock and roll and also Delta Blues. GD Were your parents musicians? DM My mother could play the flute and piano very well and could read music and sing. My dad, not so much! GD When did you actually start picking up the guitar to learn how to play music? DM I was about seven years old and asked my parents for a guitar, and they got me one. I was pretty surprised about that, because we had five kids in the family, so that was a pretty extravagant gift for a seven year old. I started taking lessons and got really serious about it and continue to be serious about it. GD After checking out your website, it seems you are playing in pretty successful venues. You’ve been out to the Maui Music Festival, and you’re going to be playing at the House of Blues in San Diego. Are you pleased with the way things are going? DM Yes. I’m happy with the way things are going. We were just in Philadelphia and New York City, and I have recently seen some success licensing my songs. ABM We’re hoping it’s going to be ready to hit the streets in mid-October or the first of November, at the very latest. at mobile unit will travel about two to fours hours a day to areas that have been identified as “turf.” ere will obviously be a driver along with the case manager, and we are hoping at this point to coordinate a volunteer nursing corp to do some primary ambulatory type care. We want to keep these people out of the emergency room, because the unreimbursed money that is lost, particularly Lower Keys Medical Center, is really quite substantial. So with the mobile unit, we want to address the issues, and we’re hoping to draw in some funding as well to the county by seeing if we can get these people the benefits that they are due. artscene/ SONG TOUR KICKS OFF OLD TOWN FOLK Above, Natalia Zukerman and Adrianne Gonzalez, right The Old Town New Folk series returns to e Studios of Key West on Wednesday, <strong>September</strong> 7, with a performance by Natalia Zukerman and Adrianne Gonzalez, two of the hottest young singer/songwriters on the scene today. e 8 p.m. concert is part of the Art is Song tour, a music and art collaboration making its way to festivals all over the country. A professional guitar player and collaborator, Natalia regularly records and tours with well known and respected musicians including Catie Curtis, Janis Ian, Willy Porter and Susan Werner. Her music touches soulful folk, adult pop, rootsy blues, ballads and a more urban Americana — all delivered with jazzy rhythmic overtones and Zukerman’s distinctive vocals. Adrianne grew up in Miami, lives in Los Angeles and has shared the stage with Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne. e two met four years ago at a music festival and had an immediate musical connection. Over the years, Natalia and Adrianne have played numerous shows together, adding harmonies and guitar parts to each other’s songs. is project takes their collaboration, blurring the boundaries and intersections of two disciplines and opening up the many possibilities in the integration of visual art and music. Art is Song was born when the two decided to illustrate their songs through www.konklife.com 11 paintings. eir method is to start with a lyric or an image from one of their songs. Once the image is discussed, Adrianne or Natalia will start the piece. At some point, they switch and the other will finish the painting. e results are powerful visual representations of songsthe colorful emotion of song captured on canvas, wood and paper. At each stop on the tour, Natalia and Adrianne set an exhibition of paintings they have created together. e two artistsl then do a full performance of the songs the paintings are based on as well as other songs from their catalogs.
