Deblois Milledge
Singer/songwriter
Guy deBoer | GD You are currently
traveling around the country and, fortunately
for us, Key West is one of your
stops. One of the events taking place
while you are in town is Womenfest.
Are you looking forward to this?
Deblois Milledge | DM Yeah. I’ll be
doing a special cruise on the Fury boats
and the week of September 5-10 we’ll be
over at the Smokin’ Tuna.
GD What attracts you to Charlie
Bauer’s new place?
DM Charlie is a good friend, and I know
that all the music that he gets involved
with is of the highest quality.
I’m very happy to be a part of
that. I can’t say enough nice
things about the place. I
invited my family in Miami
to see it, because it’s one of
those spaces that just have
an amazing energy to it.
GD You’ve been coming back
to Key West for several years,
and you have developed quite
a strong following here. What
is it about your music that you
think keeps people coming back
to hear you?
DM We play some of our original music
and manage to sneak in some cover
materials. I think that people like the
songs we play.
GD Tell us about your music style.
DM I think it’s basically American roots
music. I play acoustic guitar and sing. I
find that people are also drawn to that
minimal quality about the music. I
usually have a band with me, so there
are drums and bass involved. But at its
core, it’s acoustic music.
GD Do you feel that it sort of goes under
the term of folk music?
DM Yes. I love folk music and definitely
what I play has huge influences drawn
from that genre of music.
GD When we talk about the range
of the music you’re writing, are there
any flavors that you normally think
about to give people an idea what they
can expect?
DM Folk is a good place to start. and
then from there, may be moving into
blues and a little bit of jazz influences.
People compare me sometimes to Nora
Jones or Sheryl Crow, both of whom use
really high-caliber musicians to help
elevate their simple folk rock tunes
to something that is really musically
expressive.
GD You did come with a group
of musicians this time around. Who
all is in the Deblois Milledge Band?
DM I have a great group in town. Dave
Curtis is playing bass, Billy ompson
guitar and Danny Campbell on drums.
ese guys are just fantastic musicians
based out of California who
have been to Key West many
times backing me up in the
past. In their own right, they
have resumes pages long.
GD When a group gets
together, what attracts the
individuals to play?
DM For me, I just mostly like
the drums. I want the beat
to be there every time, so that
I know where I am. And it can
help the whole thing to sort
of have a groove. And then once you
have the groove, you can pick your
players from there.
GD Is it difficult being on the road with
a bunch of people and trying to get
