4.3 D<strong>at</strong>abase Design<br />
The d<strong>at</strong>a in the <strong>system</strong> has to be stored and retrieved from d<strong>at</strong>abase. Designing the d<strong>at</strong>abase is part<br />
of <strong>system</strong> design. D<strong>at</strong>a elements and d<strong>at</strong>a structures to be stored have been identified <strong>at</strong> analysis stage.<br />
They are structured and put together to design the d<strong>at</strong>a storage and retrieval <strong>system</strong>.<br />
A d<strong>at</strong>abase is a collection of interrel<strong>at</strong>ed d<strong>at</strong>a stored with minimum redundancy to serve many users<br />
quickly and efficiently. The general objective is to make d<strong>at</strong>abase access easy, quick, inexpensive and<br />
flexible for the user. Rel<strong>at</strong>ionships are established between the d<strong>at</strong>a items and unnecessary d<strong>at</strong>a items<br />
are removed. Normaliz<strong>at</strong>ion is done to get an internal consistency of d<strong>at</strong>a and to have minimum<br />
redundancy and maximum stability. This ensures minimizing d<strong>at</strong>a storage required, minimizing chances of<br />
d<strong>at</strong>a inconsistencies and optimizing for upd<strong>at</strong>es. The MS Access d<strong>at</strong>abase has been chosen for<br />
developing the relevant d<strong>at</strong>abases.<br />
