Photography:
From an Artist’s Perspective
What makes a good photo? Is it
the angle, the lighting, the color,
the model, or a mixture of
all of those combined? What
separates a professional picture
from something done by the
average person? Mrs. Toalson,
the photography teacher here
at Fort Myers High, describes a
good piece as, “Something with
authenticity, a balance of tones,
contrast, and the perfect composition.”
A photograph can
either be digital or black and
white. The differences in these
Photography is all about perspective. A
certain angle or lighting on an ordinary
object can change that object into the
extraordinary. Her theme is editorial
photo and she pulled inspiration from
Vogue and Harper’s Bizarre. Her whole
show is shot with black and white film
and developed in the darkroom..
I Am Awesome: “Just finished the New
car!”
Not Scared: “Wish I had a lighter.”
processes is the way to develop
and the outcome. Black and
white photos are developed
in the darkroom at Fort Myers
High and described by Mrs. Toalson
as a very “wet chemical
process.” Digital photography
is developed in a very “dry process”
and is composed of electronic
pixels. In order to get a
good photo, a photographer
must take into account the type
of photograph they are using to
affect the composition and texture
of the photo.
Mixed media is all about capturing the
essence of multiple styles into one art
piece. Kelsey Zablackas took mixed
media and used the combined styles in
order to create a unique piece.
Here at Fort Myers High School is a photographer’s
workspace after taking a picture. It
is a darkroom that allows them to develop
certain types of photographs to get different
qualities and textures out of them. This
allows them to create a different style of
photograph that is unique and appealing.
